    Altria reminds me of my mom's church. The elderly congregation keeps shrinking in size, and there are few youngins replacing them. I would imagine it might be tougher for a former smoker to be in the same room with active smokers than a former drinker with active drinkers. In the case of a former drinker, you don't have to worry about second-hand alcohol to remind you of what you're missing. I'm glad to hear that you are no longer a smoker, Joe. You are way too young and have too much to live for.
    The pain management market is huge. As a back pain sufferer, I've bought all kinds of devices in the attempt to alleviate my pain. A friend of mine suggested that I look into THC based ointment that she found effective. I am also considering edibles as an alternative to ibuprophen and my nerve medication that has the side-effect warning that users might become suicidal (that's nuts). Maybe Altria can focus on creating effective and non-addictive products for the pain managment/wellness segment and rebrand themselves from an evil company into a do-gooder.

      Pain management has been a historical disaster so that's not a bad idea for a pivot. Speaking of which, it's expected that most tobacco companies will pivot into cannabis, and that eventually we'll see Federal-level legalization which will make those pivots possible.
      On the topic of quitting, once you pass a year off cigarettes (and all forms of nicotine) then you don't even crave. It's easy to be around smokers and there's a bit of nostalgia there even, but no cravings. Joe P.

    There is something ironic about a major tobacco company having so much "Good will" on their balance sheet

  • @Sicksociety334
    @Sicksociety334 3 месяца назад +1

    The only bull thesis I have for any of the big tobacco companies are federal legalization of cannabis and acquiring everything to be had with the production and marketing of it. That leads back to black market competition and the fact that so many younger generations are already used to getting their cannabis ( that is bought commercially) from the dispensaries. It’s a hard sell that MO or any of the others will be around in much more fashion than say pipe tobacco and cigars are now.

    • @Nanalyze
      @Nanalyze  3 месяца назад

      Tobacco pivoting to cannabis once we have full legalization seems likely. Perhaps the goal will then be to establish a popular brand nationwide. They'll need to treat whatever they acquire as a holding company so people don't associate the brand with the big bad tobacco companies.

    I was a crazy smoker through college. At least two packs a day, sometimes four (seriously). I used to keep two cartons of smokes at all times in my car so I never ran out. One night I had some uniquely strong pot that sent me into a psychedelic ferver where I felt like I was surrounded by smoke, like a Disney animation where the smoke forms arms and holds you down. Well it was so intense that I stopped off at my friends work, gifted him the two backup cartons and I have never smoked since. One of my best decisions. So I agree that having a great story behind you is an excellent way to quit. Cheers.

    This might just be my opinion, but when I invest in these companies that are not really in growth mode anymore (perhaps even in secular decline), I'm often worried when I see leadership with big plans on getting back into growth. More often than not, I just want them to use their big cash flows to do tons of buybacks and dividends. I there is alot of potential when it comes to investing in so called "cannibals" who buy back tons of shares. I own both Altria and BTI.

    • @Nanalyze
      @Nanalyze  3 месяца назад

      Teams with dreams. It's tough to build sustainable franchises that consistently grow over time but many dividend champions are just that. Once they go into decline it's tough to turn the ship around to growth (INTC, IBM, CSCO). That's when leaders come out with grand plans and spin wheels (HP going back to the garage anyone?). We really want to avoid dying dinosaurs as these are often yield traps ready to spring dividend cut announcements. Hadn't heard the term "cannibals" but it's a good description. Sounds like IBM! Just need to consider total return. Joe P.

      @@Nanalyze I think it was Monish Pabrai I heard the term cannibal from first time. Another, similar situation is when you have businesses trade below their liquidation value,at which point it might be a good idea to just let the company die gracefully
