How did VIKTOR get into the Academy? Are there any other UNDERCITY students or is he the only one? These questions aren’t answered in Arcane itself, but thankfully a tweet from Amanda Overton tells us a secret backstory for Viktor that never made it into the show. The story of how Viktor tricked Piltover’s academy and risked everything for the chance at an education is not just inspiring -- it’s CLASSIC Viktor! Nothing stands in the way between him and the science!

For those asking about Sky, it's unclear where she's from, but there's slight evidence she's from Piltover, probably a lower house:
1) in the flashback, she's looking down on viktor from above, this scene definitely comes off as demonstrating ALL the reasons why viktor grew up with an inferiority complex: being unappreciated for his intellect, being handicapped, and being looked down on figuratively and literally by topside
2) Sky has a surname. It's not said as a rule, but none of the undercity characters have surnames, and enough of the piltover characters do that it seems like a straightforward worldbuilding principle they'd be implementing here: lower classes are deprived further of identify by only allowing upper class people from houses to use surnames.
Like I said, it's very slight evidence, but seems reasonable more reasonable to me than to assume the alternative.
Where exactly is that flashback scene set? I always assumed Zaun because the kids are playing in polluted water. But looking at it again there's good views of the sky (huh), so maybe it's like a boundary area between topside and the undercity, where kids of both classes can play together
@@EnglisherThanThou yeah I agree, the flashback appears to take place on the Promenade level, which is at the top of the undercity (opens up into the lanes, where we later see Vi and Cait drop in) and in the not-as-wealthy part of topside that's across the bridge.
@@schnee1 I wonder if the scene where Viktor looks up at both Sky and the sky is symbolic of his desire to be free both of his disability and Zaun?
Idk about Arcane, but. In core universe, some Zaunite have a surename. Thats literally confirmed by the new champion, Renata Glasc.
@@schnee1 The scene definitely takes place at the border between Zaun and Piltover however it is on the Zaun side.
When Victor goes to see Singed for a sample of shimmer, it is at the same cave that he visited as a child. To get back from the lab he had to cross the bridge. Later when he released Ash's... ash?.... Sky!
When he drops Sky's ashes, he doesn't have to go into Zaun.
The window he sits in, where he was going to throw himself off, where heimerdinger sees him. It overlooks where he played as a child but it also overlooks Singed's lab. The place represents where he came from, where he is going and what/who was sacrificed on the way there.
Ah, yes, the best strategy to get into your dream school:

To disguise his new leg from others, the Hexcore removed its mobility after Viktor tried to destroy it, and he’s not used to walking without it.

that somehow makes the scene with Heimerdinger and the little girl sadder, seeing Viktor being more than capable of great scientific achievement even though he's from the undercity and then see that it's not fostering curiosity for science or engineering with the little girl, possibly because Piltover never gave the undercity people a change to learn

@@myb701 I think you're close to the truth, though its more focused on Heimerdinger's failure as a visionary/leader. He was so focused on the beauty of the sky above (technological progress) and shepherding its progress that he forgot the ground below (Zaun's exploitation as the foundation of Piltover's success). He was so wrapped up on preventing the tragedy of Shurima that he failed to notice the tragedy of the undercity, and his skulking visit to the lanes was him getting some much needed humble pie
I don't see the girl as not being curious, what I remember is her mother drawing her away from the creepy hooded yordle, that gives gifts to small kids.

@DETOXOLATE That particular line is from League of Legends' version of Viktor. Not that creative of a reference, but with a great setup.
@Mirai Hi What are you talking about? League of Legends VERSION of Viktor? Viktor from Arcane is the Viktor from League of Legends. Arcane is very much happening in League of Legends universe.
@@itsthegr8matt theres actually some disconnect between the show and the game, like some of the stuff is not canon in the game but is canon in the show and vice versa
A small but cute detail about viktor. When he’s young, he uses his cane on the same side as his bad leg. This isn’t how you’re supposed to use a cane. But as he’s older, he used it on his good leg side, which is how it’s supposed to be. It’s just a cute way of showing his succession.
I’m sure you’ll get into this, but I’ve seen some really great comments floating around about how Viktor’s constant risk taking pre hex core (getting into the academy, trusting Jayce) always ends up resulting in a success. It sets things up perfectly for him to go all in, head first, no questions asked, when experimenting with the hex core. It’s the first time he’s probably seeing a risk go so badly and it’s just another great example of how the writers challenge all of the characters with “what their experience of the world is vs. reality”

I like to think Viktor helped Sky get her position because he remembered her and recognized her talent."

I will forever say it: The scene of Viktor running is in my opinion the best in all of Arcane.
It's incredibly powerful, and personally as someone that has suffered a lot because of a congenital disease i can't help but love that scene.
Makes sense since both Jinx and Victor, the only 2 to mix Hextech and Shimmer, are both outcasts. Both utilized for what they can accomplish, but shunned for what they are.
Viktor is going to be the saddest tragedy (in the literary sense) in Arcane.
I keep seeing people talk about Viktor's transformation into Glorious Evaluation, as if it's just him becoming a villain. While it is inconsistent, he does end up working in Zaun to help them.
@@Nico-zt5jl Exactly. Also people tend to say Arcane’s Viktor and LOL’s Viktor are two complete different characters. But if you catch some details here and there, you’ll see that these two are incredibly similar. Arcane’s Viktor shows how and why he starts the “Glorious Evolution”, demonstrating he still thinks about ways to help those in the undercity. His main goal with the Hextech is upgrading to improve life and the same goes for the “Glorious Evolution”. He never forced anybody -only the mentally unstable- into upgrading their bodies. The best example is the kid who was bullied in his backstory in LOL. Viktor showed him what he was doing and *asked* him if he wanted something to solve his problems temporarily (he could’ve given the child something permanent but preferred to let the child decide). The dude ain’t a bad guy; he’s only a misunderstood scientist.
He’s my favorite character for sure, with Vi as a close second.

I like Arcane-Viktor but I also consider it slightly sad cuz I know what LoL-Universe-Viktor is... and there is a major difference I feel like. The Non-Arcane Viktor pursuits change because he is an idealist.. he realised how many of accidents happen due to human error and with the augmentation he tries to save lives. He is kicked out of academy after suggesting diving suits for people that are mostly controlled by 2nd person, outside - stripping user of free will. When in his eyes it was better solution considering most deaths in previous diving equipment were caused by... you guessed it - human error, panic attacks.
This is very different Viktor and idk which one I like more.
Can't you see exactly how one turns into the other? His whole body is a human error in Arcane. He was always cripple, can't walk normally, and only with the help of technology does he manage to run for the first time ever. On top of all that, he actually gets to the point where he's on the brink of death. He started using augmentation by the way of combining hextech and shimmer not only to save his own life, but to get rid of the criple-ness. He tried to remove the human error. From here on out I assume he's only gonna continue removing human error out of the equation, maybe even for other people too.

I see the Hexcore developing an intelligence of its own. It looks like there will be some point where it merges with Viktor in a manner similar to how Doc Oc's AI began influencing him.

However, I don't pay too much mind to the "deleted scene" since it is stated that it isn't canon.
Working from my previous LoL lore, I do believe Viktor came to Piltover through Singed, seeing as Singed (in the actual Runeterra universe) is, or at the very least was, a Piltover professor, similar to Heimerdinger. It may be because of his connection through Singed that he got recommended to Heimerdinger
Of course, they may have retconned this idea, so nothing is set in stone.
I think Singed was already separated from the Academy at the time of the flashback
If you are taking into account the canon lore, arcane kind of falls apart, so its better to just threat them separately

Yay, Viktor content! Can't wait to hear more! I love the idea you mentioned of this non-canon backstory acting as an early transformation for him of sorts. It also ties into the trend of him taking big risks that keep paying off. What are your thoughts on the idea that Viktor helped build the "steel oasis" he goes to multiple times in the show? I've heard it was part of his lore that, as a teenager, he helped design and build places like this to improve the Undercity and, if Heimerdinger met him there like he seems to imply, I always assumed he was so impressed by his talent and compassion that he brought him to Piltover for that reason.

i think riot is simply aiming higher than just recreating the lol universe. There are things in the canon that are kinda lacking sense, as it is a story that was built over time, while in arcane they try to make a story that is appealing to everyone even non-lol community. As I feel arcane would have a better story line than the actual cannon, we might see changes in the cannon itself, just to make it more appealing for the audience
it sounds a lot like "non-canon because we couldnt place it in the story without it feeling forced or unnatural" like ekko's parents for example
@@finn1666 I don't think Ekko's parents are forced or unnatural they are just very flat embodiments of an archetype. Yes I know TB Skyen's quote that "Lol's character often embody an archetype rather than challenge it" Their story is sweet but ultimately they are flat. They would need a rework that could only be justified in a 13 episode season to a multi season series.
It can also be him working in front of the academy and Heimerdinger sawed him as a intelligence scientist because Heimer said: “I remember seeing a intelligence boy here”
I'd like to see a video on Heimerdinger. As the foremost intellectual of Piltover, revered by society enough to hold a respected seat in government despite "having no qualifications other than being a scientist" his successes and failures have had a huge impact on setting the stage for the events of Arcane. For an apparently immortal being who watched an ancient civilization topple to hubris, I'd like your take on how Heimerdinger's own blind spots have shaped the Arcane narrative

I’m both anxious and excited to see viktor change into the man we know from the game. I doubt he’ll be as evil as his backstory is different from the game but still. Seeing him turn into the villain will most likely break my heart but its also the most interesting story line
I sincerely hope that the people behind Arcane lean as hard into the GLORIOUS EVOLUTION as hard as everyone in the discord call does whenever Viktor is in the game
Love that arcane didnt do the switch to machine Victor right away. Its so much better knowing the ending but watching him struggle.
I don’t know from where i remember piltover having a sort of science project showcase every progress day, on those events, inventors from across Runeterra including Zaun traveled to Piltover to showcase their projects with the hope that one of the bigger houses on piltover (Such as Kiramman or Medarda) would lend financial support for the so said project, I just assumed that Viktor was discovered by Heimmer in one of those events. I think there’s a tale about Caitlyn where a Noxian war mason was pretending to be one of those Inventors to sneak in into Piltover and leak information from the Medarda clan or something like that but I really really can’t recall, i read that so long ago and I’m sure I’m mixing details. If there’s anyone who knows what the hell I’m talking about I’d appreciate the help lol

I just love how they worked with the Lord this game to make something incredibly new. I’m sure you don’t need to hear me rant about how unique the animation and art is, how stylistic the music is, the great storytelling that understands show downtown and the amazing characters that benefit from an already fleshed out backstory n character. I haven’t gotten excited for an animated series like this In this specific way much since avatar the last Airbender growing-up

I think the Andor show addressed the whole “sneak into a place you don’t belong just by wearing their clothes” trope very well. It’s referencing the Empire, but I think this can apply to high society or any group of higher station, and it went something like “they are so arrogant and proud of who they are that they can’t fathom an outsider sneaking in and pretending to be them”. It kind of sounds silly to think that powerful people aren’t paranoid about this happening until you remember real life instances like the art student in China that lived for free for like a month because she mimicked the mannerisms and attitude of the top 1%, and whether that was real or not it still makes you realize the weight of that arrogance that could possibly exist in the minds of powerful people like they think the people below them can’t possibly replicate who they are and how they flaunt their privilege in day to day life.

Viktor's is a "bad guy" but he isn't a bad guy; just morally skewed because society did him dirty.
Damn i love the guy, he's my favorite in arcane and even before that, i love that he was never actually evil, just blunt. Wish sky survived and they would have a happy endong or something but oh well
I haven’t seen the scene of him running yet and he’s the coolest scientist there to me and omfg I started tearing up
i honestly hope they tone down the extremity of Viktor’s LoL lore. it doesn’t really fit the character they’ve created this far and his relationships with other people, at least in the sense that his LoL lore constantly villainizes him and paints him as Jayce’s adversary. He’s very clearly a character that cares for others in a at least generalized way, and i’m fairly certain he even stated in the show Hextech was to help other people. I don’t see a character like that going full villain mode and losing his marbles completely. especially since this character has faced some of the harshest realities out of any in the show.
Rewatching arcane and I don’t know if I found something that’s common knowledge or not. But definitely a very cool Easter egg for what’s going to happen to Viktor
In the song sequence for episode 5 (the part with enemy playing) right after we hear about Viktors illness we cut to Sevikas card game as she drops the death card and the magician card. The death card has a skeleton with a shadowy ghost emerging from it and looking back at the body (either referring to Jink and Silco since the baptism scene started the song sequence, or referring to a kind of rebirth on Viktors part, leaving behind his dying body with the power of hexcore) and the magician card has what looks like an armoured man harnessing the power of a rune with a third arm behind his back (no explanation needed for those who know 🤫)
Like I said, don’t know if this is common knowledge or if you’ve covered it before, but goes to show just how good arcane is even after two years now. Love your content, keep up the good work!!

Riot needs to make a story about Sky inside Viktor's arc. She literally became an academy student because of Viktor. She could be a reason for thr Arcane universe's Glorious Evolution, stopping pain, weakness, and death

He’s visibly deceased. People normally are repelled by the appearance of illness, but Victor’s design is still appealing.
I think it comes down to his eyes. He has these expressive amber eyes that make you like him immediately.
Viktor has an… interesting future in Arcane. His story could also show that Arcane could lead into the current LoL canon. They simply scrap champions current origins and replace it with arcane, or combine the two.

It's something i wish had been developped a bit more, when it comes to Viktor, but Arcane was already stuffed with goods, but yeah: how does it feel to be an inbetweener. How do people from the Undercity see him? Is he se en as "one of them" or rejected as "too Piltie now"? How does he feel, dotés he have à n'y guilt for "getting out"? We see where his allegiance go, and that he wants the people down there to strive, which is also why he is so desperate to not die before hextech helps them (and because he feels once he's out of the picture, no one will care, and hextech will get "corrupt"). Maybe S2 will allow to learn more about this
