This is the reason I love this series. Throw a kid who probably had poor social skills in life, who has poor self-worth. Who acts brash and over emotes in situations to either try and diffuse the situation with comedic relief or acts over confident as to not show weakness. Into this world where you have literal candidates for royalty, born and raised to strive for a goal. All the while not being able to truly open up to anyone about his situation that is driving him mad. When this was originally airing people also made the innocent jokes about just kill yourself and restart, but that's traumatic in of itself. When you completely devalue your own life and treat yourself and all relationships around you as something that you can just restart if you take a wrong turn. Then what meaning is there even in those relationships, friendships, if they mean so little to you that you'd just redo everything all the time if it's not in your favor. Love the videos, can't wait for more!
6:34 Emilia says that her Great Spirit controls Fire, yet we've seen both him and Emilia use Ice. When Puck went over the possible elements, you may have noticed that Ice was absent from the list. This is because in Re:Zero's world, Fire magic is actually the ability to control temperature, and it can either raise it or drop it. So "Ice" is actually a form of Fire magic.
@@draykohunter6805 fair enough, it's easier to pick up on the novels or through the author's Q&As. You can also see some of it on Echidnuts video on how magic works in Re:Zero! Have a good one
It should be noted ice magic can be used through either Fire[Ice] magic or Water magic. However ice made through fire magic is capable of changing temperature to be colder and even resistant to fire
I'm so happy to see Re:Zero so often on this channel. I watched it recently (finished last week) and it def become one of my favorites. I recently bought some Light Novels to learn more about the series and I'm super hyped to get on this anime journey with you again so quick :D
Roswaal's title is "Margrave", it has a few meanings historically, but in the context of the anime it's a title given to a military commander of a border area.
This is why re;zero is one of my best anime when it comes to story telling, you could see here very well the very true nature of a human being, when driven to corner, a man ugly nature comes forth blinded by pride and ego and instantly life humbles us. Unlike other anime, you don't see a mc stooping this low and uncool but that is also what makes this show amazing.
I think all the events and experiences that Subaru has been would be difficult for anybody of any age to deal. The fact he is a young man only makes more so. I think this might the biggest L he took so far, I wonder how he will bounce back.
Yeah, this episode Subaru shows us a pretty ugly side of himself. And unlike many stories, he suffers actual consequences for it. Tappei knows how to write a convincingly flawed character. This was an especially hard blow for people used to self-inserting as the MC, no wonder so many dropped the show right there.
Yeah, as cringe as this episode is, it is a pretty realistic depiction of teenage idiocy and overconfidence. There are people that have even worse public breakouts on TikTok everyday.
Rezero has the most interesting relationship Dynamics I've ever seen in an anime, all the characters have layers and complex feelings about people they're close to. Rem and ram Subaru and Emilia and there's tons more in the series.
Morgan mentioned one word.. pride...which is exactly what Subaru is. He's obviously treating this situation like he’s in a fantasy game. Talks over her, doesn't keep his promises, imposes himself & just thinks everything will somehow work out...cringe personality. Hope he learns from it. I felt so sorry for Emilia.
Recent reread and it's vainglory Subaru is referenced in terms of in the end of volume 4, not pride, the sin of falsely declaring a hollow victory or something. Meaning his words are hollow because he knows they're not true. Subaru isn't really described as prideful in the title cards or narrative much, more vainglory(this also fits the self declared knight natsuki subaru title), sloth and greed. Note vainglory is an older sin which was merged into pride, but the falsely declaring yourself the victor element fits his character and in fact struggle with rbd more.
Every time Subaru uses "comedy" to describe himself he always uses words that can be seen as him talking badly about himself. He in reality seems to have a very low opinion of himself. So I feel that here Subaru projects all his worth as a person into Emilia because she was the first person in that world to show him any kind of compassion. And I think that's why he seems to take any insult directed towards her as if it was an insult towards him. And this is probably what Emilia noticed too. Which is why she said that he wasn't doing anything for her. He was doing it for himself. And it's true, he was doing nothing but embarrassing Emilia beyond belief and making her look bad in front of everyone in what it was probably one of the most crucial moments of her entire life goal. She literally had to drag him like a child in front of the most important people in the entire kingdom because he kept calling himself "her knight" and being disrespectful with the actual (very well trained and well educated knights) that called him out for saying something so absurd in front of them and everyone else.
RBD is such a strong catalyst for showcasing subarus character for his best and worst parts this is what re zero is about pain suffering mistakes but hopefully there is growth at the end of the day I love this episode despite how hard it is to watch
24:08 I've watched a fair amount of reactions and read a fair amount of comments in relation to this episode and while I completely get the second hand embarrassment I felt that too my first time I've noticed people treat Subaru as if he carries no trauma. People treat Subaru as if he's just arrogant or "cringe" rather than somewhat broken, he's died by this point in the story around a hundred times and he has the memory of the pain in each death I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even be in any way coherent by this point in his shoes so I've never felt a dislike for him in this episode I felt pity for a person with an already low opinion of himself whom has had to endure horrors most couldn't.
@@birdup2141 the only one i know, is schult but he just a boy so i'm not sure you really talking about it. You can say it, just put "SPOILER" with a lot space, i'm in the middle of arc 7 if it pass that just say so
I love that you get that he's not being honest! Like when you said, because he loves you, that is actually what he should have said and he realised he wasn't saying the truth to her. Subaru hints and flirts with her constantly before this, but he's not trying to get through when he's burying it all in jokes, he's never honestly expressed it so Emilia can understand.
Also a lot of them have many names and reputations, Roswaal is the strongest magician and court magician but also kinda the court jester... And also "demihuman lover" because there are a lot of rumours of him hiring only demihumans out of a fetish.
Yeah, I've felt embarrassed for a character or situation before in other shows, however, this episode was the first time I cringed as hard as I did. I think it's in part how Subaru seems a lot like a self insert, and so you sometimes fall into that trap, but once the story really shows how Subaru is by no means a blank slate it really throws you back for a loop.
Yeah Emilia was 100% valid for doing what she did in this episode, you can understand them both to some extent, Subaru is obviously not in his right mind here and is acting rashly and Emilia can't possibly understand what Subaru is going through so she did the best thing for herself and distanced herself from him
Detail: Julius did this whole show to save him; yes, he did this because all the other knights were hostile towards him, he could potentially be murdered by some knight, so Julius, a knight among knights, decided to teach him a lesson in front of everyone; Subaru was so humiliated that they even started to feel pity for him. Another detail, Julius tarnished his honor a little by this.
Ferris is the one who actually explains it though and basically says he did it for multiple reasons, one of which was absolutely being offended as a knight. After all, he keeps beating Subaru long after the knights stop cheering.
I don't know if its just me but I completely understand subaru, yeah it's not noble but if I saved someone's life multiple times and had to suffer and die multiple times for them, even IF they didn't know that, you would want that person to repay you, yeah it's a shitty thing to want but I get it
first time I watched this I recall thinking that if I were in subaru's shoes I wouldn't have claimed to be her knight knowing that it is an actual profession in this other world and not just some special honor. I would've been more direct and said emilia's admirer as well as a butler at roswaal mansion - and as such, its only natural for me to be frustrated listening to miserable old farts publicly insulting someone who I both serve and adore. idk how that would've panned out for me but that's what I would've said.
That was my thought as well watching the episode the first few times. Subara claiming to be her knight was the dumbest thing he could have since not only is it not true, he has none of the skills and training to even be an apprentice knight let alone a white knight of a royal candidate.
In this episode Julius actually confronted subaru for a good reason and saved subaru's life in this 1v1, because if it weren't for him Subaru would suffer the real death penalty
I'm trying. I'm trying so hard, but I can't watch it all again without skipping. it's too real, and I can't kill the part of my that is the cringer. Because I am the cringe. The cringe is me.
Relatable. I've paused this video multiple times already, sometimes within seconds of each other, due to cringing. Might just do the same as you and skip every 5s I cringe lmao Thankfully, this is pretty much rock bottom and it can only go up from here
Yeah this episode is definitely important for later events. Subaru is supposed to look like a jerk here, it's not the author glorifying his arrogance and I think that's what makes this moment critical and understandable for the narrative. I'm very glad the author had Emilia basically cut things off with Subaru at the end here, instead of treating it like Subaru is this flawless hero

A ton of people dropped the series after this episode when it was originally airing because it didn't fit the standard Isekai "the hero gets the girl". Emilia actually being her own character and not just going with Subaru's BS is EXACTLY what separates Re:Zero from like 95% of all other Isekai.
I know it's bad to joke about 'offing myself,' but I still frequently make jokes about it, probably because I find it funny if it's directed towards me and not another person. I'm flawed, and I'm aware of that. However, I personally don't like it when other people joke about 'offing themselves.' I know it's strange, but it's not the same (I think that's very selfish of me). So, I especially don't like it when someone tells another person a joke about 'offing themselves.' 😅
Julius actually saves subarus life here. the knights wouldve killed him for the disrepect. this episode is also the first that shows this world and show will not work on main character b.s.
Not all the suffering is physical, but emotional too. The second hand embarrassment is strong this episode.
Indubitably, emotionally. This was a rough episode.
This episode is extremely hard to watch. I even feel embarrassed bruh...

Having a flawed main character has so much more potential for deep character writing and development than having a generic anime MC
