- Welcome to Volume 14 of Railscape Adventures. Rail based Intermodal Port shuttles are becoming more and more popular around the world as a way to keep congestion down on city streets, or narrow transit-ways. With road or rail delivering to major hubs, a rail operator will then haul the final distance to and from the local port for export.
In April 2023 I had the chance to follow one of KiwiRail's port shuttles from the city of Dunedin to their associated intermodal port located at Port Chalmers, 15km up the track in New Zealand's South Island. Here we watch shunt loco DSG3251 perform the duties required to resupply the port with containers and remove the empty wagons, all done under Radio Control
