Contemporary stagings of classic operas are the future of preserving the art form by connecting them to new audiences. Otherwise these great works will fade away with their aging audiences. Not all attempts will be successful but those that succeed are transformational.

I've seen one of these renditions (Rigoletto) at the Bonn Operahaus, it was one of the worst experiences of my life. They took an immortal piece of art and shoved it into the mud. In serious Opera one expects to immerse himself and to reach chatarsis, instead it seemed to me that I was watching a Netflix series filled of childish symbolism.

Oh no, was it that terrible? I am thrilled to see they are making renditions, look so creative and renovate!

      @@lisaleung9188 My friend,
to renovate or improve an opera of a genius like Verdi it takes another genius and let me tell you this: this Weber guy is no such thing.
The immense beauty of Rigoletto rests on a rare equilibrium of music, singing, words, story and characters that is easy to destroy.
If you change the setting, the words will make less sense and there won't be the necessary atmosphere to enjoy fully the music: it will
be like listening to a recording in an empty room! Opera is much more than that, it is a totally immersive experience.
Music and story are tied together, one cannot just change one of them.
Let me ask you a question. What is more original: to immerse yourself in Mantua during the italian Renaissance or into a generic nowadays city? Hint: we don't need to go to the theater to see one of these.
In conclusion, yes, it was that bad, even worse: it was *ordinary*.
If they really think that they are so original and that they are doing something good, why not writing it explicitely in the ticket or in the title of the show? If the ticket says Rigoletto I expect Rigoletto, like it has been done for more than a century, not their own readaptation of it. There was no way of knowing it before the Prima. But they don't dare doing so because they want to use the well established fame of the Rigoletto to sell their own twisted operas and satisfy their ego. Thieves.
Do you see how much it upsets me? Do a favour to yourself, find a proper rendition and go to that one.

These charlatans are running wild with our art form. the video starts with the biggest falsehood of all... "a beautiful voice is not enough". A beautiful voice puts the people in the seats--it's these shit show of productions distorting and bastardising these immortal pieces keeping the theatres empty.
