Hello, this video will show you how to remove the fan clutch of bmw without using the special tool. This removal process works for the majority of bmw models from 96-05 such as BMW M5 740 540i 525i and even on 3-series models such as BMW M3 330 323 325 328. Hope this video is helpful.

Jeez brah you're the only one who shows the proper trick to loosen the bolt, thank you so much
Glad we could help

Thanks dude, I was stuck without knowing how to do. I did your method and he worked perfectly
I love the way the camera cuts at the moment the bolt is released. Ive seen that happen in a few videos. Personally I suspect they've had a hell of a time freeing that nut and edit the video to make it look a matter of course. Mine was a nightmare. I procrastinated a vanos refurb because I couldn't get the nut undone, even after ordering special levers for the job. Eventually my waterpump bearing gave out and I had no choice. It took the fan blades out with it and getting that damn nut undone away from the car took my full workshop facilities. It was as if it had been at the bottom of the ocean for years. Terrible maintenance issue in my opinion and I used anti-seizure measures on the reassembly of new parts.
Good to read your comment, because I have this situation right now with my 540i and I was wondering if I am the only person to have such an issue with the big bolt. With a second person and lots of tools and power we tried the whole evening without success. It did not come off. :-( Hopefully tomorrow...
Thanks man, did you help me! Congratulations from brasil

I looked at another very good video but when you did the model it cleared up everything and came off just like you showed. Thanks Good Job
Genius tip! Thanks so much. No special tools needed.
After days this finally helped me avoid the shop a $5 pry bar thank you so much
Awesome video, Great detail. I was stuck until now.
Thanks ...it worked for me!! When the rental tool didn't work....thanks
Good to hear
Excellent video explanation and demonstration. The strap wrench wasn't working for me last night but now I can't wait to try this pry method tonight. (Trying to get at the stripped torx bolts at the bottom of the throttle body to replace the tb gasket.)
Thanks for watching our video, glad you enjoyed it. Last time i stripped one of those torx bolts, I got a socket, hammered it slightly to the head of the torx bolt and I was able to remove it that way. I can't remember which size socket i used but it it was smaller than the 10mm. Anyhow, good luck.
You're spot on! My father shared that method with me and it worked! We used a 3/8th inch socket. Nobody on the thread on the forum knew of that method. He learned of it while working on his Porsche 968, they have something even worse, triple squares (called cheeseheads) and they strip real bad. The s
Thats awesome. Something good always comes out of a stripped head bolt. I tried using vice grips with no luck until finally something clicked and i used the socket method instead and worked great. As always, listen to your dad, us old school guys can teach you young folks a thing or two. Thanks for sharing your experience. you take care.
My car is real noisy on cold start ups. I'm taking it to the shop this week but I'm guessing my radiator fan/fan clutch could be the culprit. I know you'd personally had to look and hear it but what do you propose?
What ways can you make your BMW cooling system more reliable ? Is there any mods or upgrades lmk
Thanks man, you just helped me out with my 1992 E36!
Thanks
You're a bloody legend mate. Thanks

why is that although my fan clutch is bad, when I turn on the heat, the temperature goes back to normal?
Hello my fried is a very good tutorials u made , did u record how can change the automatic transmission for a bmw 1998 325i ?
Yahve Sparrow that's a huge job
Thanks for all your videos, definitely helpful! Saving me lots of time and money.
Glad to hear. More videos are coming soon.
And another question , is compatible one transition from one 328 I 1998 to one 325i 1998 ? Cos my transition I change the oil and in I found some metal pieces so , I think I need to change it all , or what is ur opinion ? Thanks a lot for made this tutorial they help a lot ,and I waiting for ur answer my friend
+Yahve Sparrow Best advise we can give you is to verify part numbers. From our experience, 328i models have a ZF Transmission while 325i models with smaller engine have a GM.
For ppl complaining about the big nut removal it took me 30-40 mins so like he said grab a wrench that’s the right size but what he left out was that a skinny long Phillips screwdriver works best instead of grabbing it from the top right by where the wrench is in place go around the car and grab the screwdriver and stick it in between two 10 mm bolts hold it snug and it’ll look like a V or L the wrench in place straight up with the Phillips in between 2 10mm bolts and then hold the Phillips screwdriver firm and just push the wrench it’s best to do this standing from the passenger side you can spin the pull to your best location for the Phillips head to grab onto
The reason I found out the Phillips head would work best is best a flat head is a lot more wide it doesn’t let you go through with ease this job isn’t as difficult as it seems
thank you soooo much your videos are very helpful to us great job

Thanks ! :) E39 1998 528i works ! ;)
My fan is stuck and will not come off, even with an assistant pulling the pry bar and me pulling on the crescent wrench. Watching this gave me an idea though, since the pry bar keeps slipping off the bolt head, I am going to try backing out one of those pully bolts to prevent the pry bar from slipping off, enablling me to use more force with the crescent wrench.
Derek Weinrich a good amount of W-40 will help.
Works on the e30 as well! Thank you!
Should work. Let us know
It does
thanks a lot man great job
what size wrench is that bolt?

Great tip bro appreciate you
Any time!
What about installing electric fans
How do you reinstall it? Same method with the pry bar? How do you know it's tight enough?
No prybar needed to reinstall. Just turn counter-clock wise to install clutch.
bimmermerchant just thread it counter-clock-wise until it is snug, then another quarter turn?? Thanks for responding!!!
i have a 2003 540i sport the v8 4.4 liter and i removed the clutch yesterday but the problem is that the pump that moves the fan is broken and corroded and it goes underneath the intake manifold so i really dont know what im working with...do u have any suggestions?
Seems that you have to replace your water pump and thermostat at the same time.

Nice guide
does any 1 know why a fan clutch wood come off it flew off in to the radiator does it have any thing 2 do with the water pump ?????? any 1
Often times the fan blades (not the fan clutch itself) self destruct and can cut into the radiator, or the hoses. That's why some BMW owners do the fan delete mod (FDM). They put in a cooler operating thermostat and add Water Wetter to their coolant and have a modified aux fan switch so it switches on at a lower temp. They operate without the main cooling fan.
Thanks for the video
You are much welcome.
Great vid, thanks
my pleasure
thanks, getting ready to do that!
