Another Quick Tip to Make your day a little less complicated!
~-~~-~~~-~~-~
The difference between baking soda and washing soda is water and carbon dioxide. Seriously. Baking soda's chemical makeup is NaHCO3 (1 sodium, 1 hydrogen, one carbon, and 3 oxygen molecules). Washing soda's chemical makeup is Na2CO3 (2 sodium, 1 carbon, and 3 oxygen molecules). When baking soda is heated up to high temperatures, it breaks down to become washing soda, water steam, and carbon dioxide.
TIP: tired of paying for stain cleaner that is costly/works sporadically/full of chemicals/soak time? my friend worked for an industrial laundry years ago and showed me their secret to removing ANY stain cheap. plain (not the new fancy stuff) rock salt! just a handful in your load with less soap will destroy stains especially grease. they would service shop mechanics/restaurant whites/and small business' uniforms/shop towels that looked like there was no hope to come clean. buy it in the summer when it's dirt" cheap". it also softens clothes and no oder! i' have kept a bag by my washer for 25 years.
Well I'll be butched!! I will try that!
basically it super softens the water to make any soap WORK! do two loads, side by side comparison. do a vid and we both will smile!
We ask our local family bakery and I buy 50lb bags of citric acid and baking soda. Great video. Washing soda is so expensive:/ thank you much
I love you DIY videos... I'm from the south and I remember when my grandmother used to make homemade lye soap. your RUclips channel is awesome.
Every since i started making lye soap I have been hooked!
We buy 50lb bags of baking soda and washing soda at our co-op. $20 per bag. Lasts us nearly a year. We use them for everything, including our inground pool. So many uses for them.
Real washing soda is sodium carbonate.
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate.
The heating drives off carbon dioxide as well as some excess water, if it is truly converting it to real washing soda.
And your recipe should do just that.
It works well!
I think it's also cheaper if buy the baking soda in bulk
love it...thsnks. i was in a Rural area in Europe, wanted to make soap but.
.no one knew what was washing soda. Now i know and will be making my own laundry detergent. Thanks again
MY PLEASURE!
Hello and Thank u.
I just had this written on my grocery list! wow, that is so neat. Thanks for sharing.
my pleasure!
Mrs. Volfie! Awesomeness again. Thank You..
I saw a recipe once that said to bake baking soda to use it to make homemade ramen noodles. Knowing now that baking it makes washing soda, I'm kind of glad I skipped that one! Maybe it's fine, but who knows!
who knows!
Tiramar Farms Homestead Also, lye used to be used to make the little crunchy noodles that go in soup..go figure right?
Wow that is so simple Thank You Bev for that info :)
Great tip.
love all your videos! you are an inspiration! I too suffer from fibromyalgia, my biggest problem is the weight gain from not being physical able to exercise like I need to... I find that your videos keep me moving and trying new things! I really just want to say thank you...
((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))) my pleasure honey!
Mrs. V. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel. I't nice to see that common sense and practicality are not lost. Something that's all too rare these days.
You forgot one super important thing I need to be kept in an airtight container or it turns back into baking soda
I would think you would NEVER put your head in the oven....lol. 😉
well, you're really missing out, then ;)
Bev, how do you find out this stuff? And oh no do you have Gracie in the kennel? LOL
yes...she was in the kennel napping (supposedly)
I hear something and then investigate..then I share!!
Wow great video thanks for sharing.
Washing soda alone lather with water ?
I lOVE that you always have an answer to my questions!!! Thanks Mrs. V
my pleasure!
Thank you so much!!
great job !! great information !! thanks for sharing !!
Thank you!
interesting never new this could be done :) thanks for sharing
the first video I did was really old..so I replaced it!
Can i do a detox bath in washing soda?
When it's baked, is it the same thing as soda ash?
I believe washing soda & soda ash are the same?
I am not sure!
Thanks a million times.l love any idea where it means I don't have to drive into town for stuff . blessings !!!!!
ME TOO!!!
I can still find Arm & Hammer Washing Soda at Walmart. Here's my little recipe for making my own laundry detergent:
1 4-lb box Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, 1 box 20 Mule Team Borax, 3 bars Fels Naptha bar soap...grate in food processor, then use regular bottom blade and process til fine, 1 3-lb tub Oxi-Clean, OPTIONAL: A container of those Un-Stoppables, choose your own fragrance
This makes enough laundry detergent to last for a long, long time, and works out for me to 8-cents per load!
LOVE IT!!
is this wet or dry?
I think it's good either way you like to store it
I take all the ingredients and dump them in a big trash bag and "roll" it around to mix thoroughly. Then I store in a big bucket. It's just like regular powdered laundry detergent and smells so good. Plus my clothes come out so much brighter. I only use about 4-6 TBLSP a load. I'll never spend $12-14 for laundry detergent again!
ah! I use this exact recipe for laundry soap. I love how well it works. I make my own fabric softener from 1 family sized bottle of cheap conditioner, 2 cups white vinegar and 8 cups water. It just adds a little fragrance and extra softness to my clothes, which we enjoy.
Evil Cookies
interesting name I like it :) also great tip with the softener thanks for that :D
I didn't realize it was so easy!
I know eh? they want us to believe cleaning is more than elbow grease and cupboard contents!
This will come in handy for making my homemade laundry detergent and cheaper.
EXACtly!
Thank you! I have often wondered what the difference between baking soda and washing soda was, but never took the time to investigate.
Anytime I find something good..I share!
Wow! I love the cherry tablecloth too.
Thank you so much for sharing this video,I will apply your recipe , see how this goes .
Wonderful!
Im sorry...but what is washing soda? is that used instead of laundry detergent or with it? what are its benefits?
it is a laundry soap booster..here is what I use it for. ruclips.net/video/grYyqzZ0t3w/видео.html
Our local walmart carries it. But it's way easy to make!! Good job.
Thanks!
Just a quickie. After this process do you have to be vigilant about keeping it away from moisture? (when storing it I mean, not using it.) Bi-carb in the UK is only sold in tiny qty's, the amount of a Schwartz herbs/spices jar, just as an fyi
So your washing soda combined with your detergent to get your clothes cleaner? Uprated Mrs. V is there anything you don't know?!! ;)
I don't think so! I am constantly amazed at her knowledge! And GRATEFUL for it!
thanks you guys! I see and hear things and investigate and if it works and is cheaper and healthier? I am IN! then I share with you!
Love your video. I use baking soda, citric acid . I buy it in 50# bags . I talked to my local mom and pop store and they can order large quantities and it’s much less expensive.
Awwwww, too bad. You ladies have inspired me more than you could possibly know. I used to do a lot of canning with my mom back in the 70's, so I'm not completely new to canning. but you have rejuvenated me! I just can't wait for Fall! Love you guys!!!
What is washing soda used for exactly
cleaning and/or making laundry and dishwasher detergents.
A good reminder thanks! Have a great weekend!
Thanks!!
Bev didn't you use to put Borax in your laundry soap?
I do honey..THIS is one of the ingredients! ;)
You can find baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in 50lb. bags at the feed mill for cheap about $20.00.
that is the pool supply stuff? I never thought of that!
No it is not the pool supply stuff. You get it at the feed mill, they use it to give to some animals for different ailments.
I thought 'Washing Soda' had a crystalline form rather than a dusty/powdery texture. Is that a different thing?
I think it is just the way the company process it?
+OurHalfAcreHomestead Might seem like a dumb question but do you use your W. Soda for clothes? I've only ever poured it down & around the plughole and the outside drain grate when I do my bi-annual spreading of the ant powder. The instructions and list of precautions on the bag frightened the bejaysus out of me.
Soooooooooooo, you use this in addition to laundry soap?
i use it in MAKING laundry soap..here is my recipe ruclips.net/video/grYyqzZ0t3w/видео.html
Thank you so much. I live in Denmark and i cannot find washing soda anywhere. They do have baking soda but only in tiny little jars but at least i not totally stuck now. Thanks a billion.
baking SODA..not baking powder right?
In Malaysia, baking soda that are sold in the supermarket are usually sold in small jars too (100g) but you can find it being sold in bulk at the baking supply shop (where bakeries get their supplies). Hardware stores sometimes have it in bulk (both baking soda and washing soda) but it is more expensive.
Sweet! Will be doing this. How much should I use per half load of laundry?
I use is in conjunction with borax and bar soap for a laundry soap recipe..
+OurHalfAcreHomestead Oh! Oops. I thought that's what this was.
whats washing soda and what do you do with it
sodium carbonate. it is used for cleaning and/or making laundry and dishwasher detergents.
What do you do with washing soda?
I make laundry soap!

Tyvm I wanted to assume that is what it was for, but I didn't because we all know what happens when you assume lol. I'm glad I asked since I got some great information!! Thank you very much again.
I use it to remove excess slag and air bubbles from molten aluminum when I’m doing backyard foundry projects.
Thank you for this! 😘
My Pleasure!
I just adore your videos- thank you for sharing
We can find that easily here in the USA. Still that is handy knowledge to have
not as easy to find here unless you are willing to drive an hour to a big box store like walmart
Walmarts are everywhere here. I dont actually like going there but it is only 5 minutes from my house.
thank you so much!
My Pleasure!
Hi there! This is a general comment to all your videos. I am new to your channel. I learned about you through Noreen. You ladies ROCK! I binge watch you, Noreen, Heather (from the Kneady Homesteader), and Katzkradul. I have learned soooo much about canning foods from all of you! Bev, YOU are absolutely amazing! I would love to listen to your honey homestead hour show. How, when and where?! PLEASE let me know! Thanks, take care, and God Bless you and your wonderful husband, Howie!!!
Thanks Darlin! Noreen, Katz and Heather are all VERY dear ladies to me! Unfortunately we don't do the HHH anymore..but it was one of my favorite times with the girls! Welcome aboard the homestead train honey!
Have you ever figured the price difference if any?
well..when I go to the general foods warehouse I can get no name baking soda for about 95 cents..it works out much cheaper then!
+OurHalfAcreHomestead that is way cheaper
Wow easy.
yup!
My chem lab project for the day. Thanks!
anytime!
You are such a clever lady xx another fantastic idea 😀👍
I did this video a long time ago..but the old one was in rough shape..so I thought I would redo it for everyone new!
Thank you for the video - I live in Alberta and you can not buy washing soda here. If I am in the USA I bring back boxes, now I can make my own. Thanks for the video
I live in Alberta, in a very small town, and finally found it in a health food store!
+T Albert but this recipe is so easy, you won't even need to check there;-)
Love the cherry tablecloth...where did you get it ?
Giant tiger!
+OurHalfAcreHomestead ....thanks for replying I will check and see if they have it at our "one" Giant Tiger here in Kingston...have a wonderful Sunday xo
I also spotted and LOVE the cherry tablecloth. Is it plastic or fabric? I'll have to check the GT here in Calgary but it's on the other side of the city.
Just picked one up !
You taught us all how to make our own washing liquid or powder so we keep the store shelves empty when we see it. Thank goodness I have some, just too hot to turn that oven on. Wonder if you could dry it out in the dehydrator, or maybe the fan would blow it around. I have an older dehydrator I use for non food items, I might just try it. Also, I make my trays, like the food roll up ones out of the plastic cutting boards from the DT to use on non food items. (2 in a pack for $1 and you can cut with sissors). If it is cheaper than the washing soda, may be making my own. You are one cool cookie, yes even in the summer time. Thanks for sharing.
the fan WOULD be an issue..and although it would dry it..it would NOT burn off the carbon dioxide.
That's what I was thinking about the fan, can see white powder all in the air. LOL. Thanks I was worried about the carbon dioxide. Well drying it out will be a winter project, will have to buy up and store up.
How cool is that.
cool enough I reckon!
+OurHalfAcreHomestead Lol. That's a figure of speech. That means that it is real cool! Meant as a statement and not as a question. Howdy from Texas! 🙋🏻
thank you mam!!!!
The printable recipe is on our website ourhalfacrehomestead.com in the RECIPE box!
I just want to let everyone know that Baking Soda vs Washing Soda are two different chemically made items. However, we can use Baking Soda to make a substance that is very similar to Washing Soda. Washing Soda cannot be eaten like Baking Soda can. Simply because of the fact that they truly are chemically 2 different things.
You can substitute Baking Soda(Sodium bicarbonate) for Washing Soda(Sodium carbonate) like this, to make your soap & such, but you cannot substitute Washing Soda for Baking Soda.

NO you cannot eat washing soda instead of baking soda..I thought I made that clear..forgive me if I did not. but you can't just substitute baking soda in your wash for washing soda..it has to be baked BEFORE it BECOMES washing soda.
Oh No, Please don't think I was trying to say you didn't make it clear ma'am. I just want people to pay attention and realize that yes, You can use baking soda in place of washing soda. But, it doesn't work the other way around. *So* it really isn't a "washing soda" per se, but a replacement able to do the job of Washing Soda.
Know what I mean? 😊
~Green Blessings to you.

when u bake it 400 degree, it turn into washing powder, due to chemical reaction taking place 😮
