      I bought one a few months ago as I'm a newbie at this and was wanting to get it right. I have a pretty long drive to a cat scale, I think I'll try the paper and pencil, calculator method - I assume the trailer does not need to be super level for that? My driveway has a slight slope. Maybe my RV dealer has a Sherline they can let me borrow, don't want to buy one for such rare use.Thanks.

    I considered purchasing this item (pka HaulGauge, before Curt bought them) as the science behind the technology seemed to make sense. Supposedly, these devices can also be used to measure trailer weight, tongue weight, GCVW, etc. I watched a few other reviews that skipped the calibration process (or simply mentioned that you needed to calibrate the device, first). Your review showed me that this is not something I should get. I'll stick with Cat scales, and probably just get a Sherline scale for periodic tongue weight measurements. Thanks for doing this!!! Cheers.

    Another way to measure your vehicle weight without a weight scale is to measure the area of contact of each tire, then multiply by the tire pressure of that tire to obtain the amount of weight that tire is supporting. Add the calculated weight for each tire to get the vehicle weight. Bonus: you'll also get the weight distribution.
    Another method is to measure suspension deflection. Level ground is not required, but is recommended for accurate weight distribution.
    Suspension deflection is probably less accurate. The accuracy of each method is left as an exercise for the reader. The CAT scale "Class IIIL scales are allowed one division, or a 20 pound variance off zero for each 10,000 pounds of weight applied." This could be used to apply a correction factor to each manual method.

    Bill Nye the science guy showed how to weigh a vehicle without scales many years ago.
    All you need is two pieces of paper, a tape measure, a pressure gauge, and a calculator.
    Place the paper in front and behind a tire on concrete surface sliding toward tire until they stop. Measure the distance in inches. Place the paper on each side against the tire and measure in inches. Calc LxW to get sq inches. Take tire pressure. Multiply sq inches x psi= weight on tire +- a few %. Do this for all tires and add the totals for total weight. Accurate dimensions necessary for more accurate weight.
    Probably more accurate than that piece of junk you had to pay for and burn gas.
    Respectfully, Kevin

It says its within 5% on the instructions of being accurate but Ive found thats its been within 150 to 175 pounds under or over what a cat scale tells me mine is. I'm never close to being top end weight for me so thats close enough for me to avoid going to the car scale everytime. I have a Sherline tongue weight scale. I developed a procedure to get individual wheel weights on my trailer using it. My procedure has been duplicated by a guy using a force jack and the procedure has been peer reviewed by several engineers. Based on adding up the four wheels and comparing to CAT scale tickets, I am getting individual wheel weights within 50 pounds of the "true" weights. Not bad for a scale I paid $140 for some years back.

    I find the determination of the force value from the OBD port to be very suspicious. According to their website, "Force is determined by measuring slip across the torque converter as the vehicle accelerates." That determination is dependent on transmission temperature and oil viscosity, transmission gearing, engine performance, OBD computer performance, and tire performance, all of which are subject to major variations. As your test showed, they missed the weight value by 10%, not very good.

  • @natepieske9382
    @natepieske9382 3 года назад

    Could the discrepancies in weight be due to the weight at the CAT scale was static and the dynamic weights from motion were increased due to center of gravity and weight shift during acceleration? My understanding was this device is more for pickup trucks and not an RV that has wonky center of gravity that could be augment just based on something as simple as having your overhead cupboards stocked or not.
    Perhaps it would be more fair to compare with something with less dramatic weight shift?
    Thank you for the video and production!

    • @Milesco
      @Milesco 2 года назад

      In a word, no. Any change in the effective center of gravity as a result of acceleration isn't going to change the weight the vehicle. The apparent mass of the vehicle is governed solely by the amount of force applied to it and the resulting acceleration.
      The applied force, in turn, is the result of the torque applied to the wheels divided by the wheel's radius.
      But there's really no way to know what that torque really is. It looks like the "Better Weigh" device is picking up some kind of engine torque reading from the vehicle's computer, but it's not at all clear how that data is acquired and how accurate it is. Moreover, it's constantly changing, and then it's multiplied by the gears in transmission, and possibly increased further by an unknown amount by the torque converter, and...it's a mess. There are simply far too many variables to be able to use this method to accurately measure the weight (mass) of a vehicle.

      I have one of these devices and once properly calibrated mine was only off by 20 lbs from what the CAT scale said. Also you dont calibrate it with the trailer connected. It's made to be used with a single vehicle . Once calibrated to that vehicle it remembers the weight of that vehicle then you hook your trailer to it and accelerate one time to 15 mph. It then calculates your total weight of truck and trailer and trailer weight alone by subtracting the known calibrated weight of the tow vehicle from the total weight. It's helps to determine it's accuracy if you know the empty weight of both your truck and trailer beforehand. Once calibrated properly and you do get your your accurate weight readings of both truck and trailer it can be used to calculate your payload as you load both truck and trailer.

    The real utility of this product is unclear. If you need to know your weight before you use it, then perhaps it could be useful if stored that info as a baseline. Then anytime you added (new gear), more passengers, etc. or removed weight (old gear) from your van, then it could provide the new weight. However that is not clear. So really very poor product positioning from a marketing standpoint. Oh yeah and it actually needs to calculate and display the accurate weight after all the calibration BS. 30 back and forth is ridiculous.

    Dear Sir James, you just saved me .1K bucks, so thank you for that.
    So just for conversations sake, let me entertain you with this thought, or idea if you will.
    My trailer is sitting in the driveway, "it's a TT by the way" and is not yet loaded for our next camping adventure. :( That being said, I can't help but wonder why my trailer jack isn't already sitting on a scale, possibly one that is built right into the tongue jack! With this idea we could as responsible load bearing haulers know what our tongue weight is, and adjust our WDH accordingly each time we hook up.
    Thanks again man, hope you get rich off of this idea...
