- Sudan, Najin and Fatu are the last three northern white rhinos left in the world. The three are living out their days at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya with an attentive group of caretakers, veterinarians, and guards. So far, attempts to breed the rhinos have been unsuccessful. While the odds of reproduction are slim, hope remains.

Those guards aren't caring for them they are literally protecting them with their lives. I did some extra research and they have guards 24/7 with automatic weapons. If anything this smaller fact evaluates the strength of these guards and the lengths they are willing to go to keep these big beauties from extinction. GOOD ON GUYS! :)

I think it is thorougly inexcusable that the goernments and peoples of the world with all the resources available could'nt save this animal.

The last male ("Sudan") died today, 3/19/18. The two females are still alive, if IVF works, they have a sliver of hope. If not, the species will be extinct. All due to poaching. Next time some NRA nut says "hunting is good for the species," ask them what it did for the White Rhino.
razorback9926 just let them die in peace. dont inseminate them. people who want to 'save' them so we can view them for science. farm animals are being slaughtered everyday and no one cares unless they are endangered. that means they dont care for the individual they just want to keep the species alive.
Terry Scott They get slaughtered because they are our food source. Also, there's many, many, *many* , of those farm species. They breed before they slaughter

And for what?
Greed, I seriously hope those who paid a lot of money take responsibility for this loss of a species and finds it a hint to donate money to protect other species in jepordy because of over hunting. This loss is not worth what they might have gained. We have lost a majestic creature. Just so some boys could be men for a moment. What a waste.
If this was the cure all for every sickness its still not worth the price thats been paid.
My only hope is for some reason a male of the species not known about us found alive and ready to mate.
Anyone who's used or bought the spoils from this should be ashamed of themselves. Your children and childrens children will never see one of these alive that's if you can get it up!
You only want what you can't have, and your willing to take it at any price. You've cheated the rest of the human and animal population of the world out of it. Why is it you hunt for what was clearly in danger of extension?
Its one thing to hunt what's plentiful but only take what you can use but this was done for profit. You might be the next big game for the hunt!

I've always wondered, why not protect rhinos by getting veterinarians to sedate them, remove their horn and replace them with a plastic prosthesis? (like a brightly colored one so that it is easily recognizable)
It wouldn't be pretty, but it would certainly remove all incentive for poachers to kill them!
there have been many approaches. People have been cutting their horns (which does not hurt the rhino), they have poisoned the horns to devalue them. But I think poachers would kill them nonetheless because there would be fewer misleading targets. They even kill baby rhinos, so I don't see how detectable fake horns would deter them.
Well, if you make it clear that no more rhinos have horns, it's simply the end of that trade. But yes, that would be hard to put in place since baby rhinos are regularly born.
Alternatively, we could trick the chinese into believing poacher skull powder cures sexual impotence...
We cant go around cutting thousands of rhino horns, physically impossible. In my opinion, reducing demand is the most sure way to stop it. We cant farm them either because part of the demand is for wild horns. And peiple buy horns as a status symbol too, not only as "medicine".
I am glad I live in the United States, where rhino horn is frowned on!

That's technically called mixed breeding and it won't be a white rhino but w mixed rhino

It's so sad that so many amazing and gorgeous animals are near extinction. On a different topic to distract myself from this anguishing fact. I have never understood why white rhinos are called white rhinos. To me, they don't look white or whitish at all.
They are called white because of a misinterpretation of the Afrikaans word for wide. They were supposed to be called northern wide rhinos referring to their wide mouths
One of the rhino male had died it been 4 years now there are only 2 they have eggs and sperm so more rhinos will come!

I'm an evolutionary biologist, unfortunately, even if breeding was successful, the bottleneck effect is just too great, and eventually genetic drift coupled with inbreeding would cause the rhinoceroses to most likely become ill and die. At this point it's too late to save them, but it's a good thing we have these videos to remember them by
Genetic drift happens when the gene pool is too big but.

Asia is the largest market for rhino horns and elephant tusks. And if the demand continues and their governments continue to do nothing, then elephants in my motherland Kenya and the rest of Africa are next.
