Back in the actual 80’s, I was always trying to get this sound out of my Marshall Master Lead Combo and a Boss Chorus pedal. Little did I know then that the trick was simply to wait 35 years.
I was amazed at all of the things I could get my AXE-FX 3 to do. However, I have learned so many more amazing things about it, and its abilities, from your videos... things that I would have never figured out on my own! I just want to thank you for sharing! You are amazing!
Hey Leon. I have had an Axe-Fx III for a little less than a year & I still think I don't know that much about it, but I know that I can always find answers from your many videos. Thank you so very much!!!
Wow! Amazing re creation of the 80’s tone, I dreamed of this tone as a 17 year old but those racks were way out of reach. Hanging out for my AE3 to arrive and dial this in. Thanks for posting this LOVE IT, definitely heaven hahahahaha!
The play out sound you got is money shot right there. Anytime you accomplish what sounds like a pad from a synth on a clean guitar sound, it really elevates and opens up dimensions for ideas and soundscapes. Well done, Very inspiring. Now I just need the money for an Axe FX ;)
It´s amazing to see how easy seems to be to create those presets...I repeat, seems to be!! Fractal users and everybody who likes these atmospheres and sound enviroments are in luck man!! Astounding as always Leon
The lack of cab sim is really interesting, would never have thought of that- a pretty crucial part of the puzzle by the sounds of it though, cheers for that!
Love it! I'm in aural heaven. Very similar to the clean sound I used to get with a Rockman and Alesis Quadraverb (with some extra EQ). This nails that 80's clean tone that I love so much.
I think it's the kind of tone that doesn't surprise me on his own, but in the mix would blow my mind. Also has to be a great tone to mix with a classic clean like petrucci does with his piezo. Love the video Leon.
As a metalhead I find it interesting how incredibly happy great cleans make me... and this was just glorious 😄👍🏼 Awesome as always Leon! 💪🏼 #bringbackthe80s
@@LeonTodd I 100% agree 🙂 what I’m trying to say is that an exceptional clean tone makes me go “wooow 😲” equally if not even slightly more than an exceptional distorted tone
I like the idea of having an 80´s rig in one unit like the Axe FX III to spare numerous units in a huge rack with splitter mixers etc. But, there is a but many times and lets say that I own another amp unit with some FX that I like som much I will not part with it, but wish my unit had the possibilities like the wet FX blocks (of the Fractal) containing 10 blocks + return and send. Q: Is this FX setup possible to recreate without the amp, cab and everything else in line one and two on a FM3 pedal? Is there enough power to be able to build such complex FX routing?
Really looking forward to checking this out, especially the part about using that cab block and multi-band. I’ve been using no cab block and have been having the exact issue you mentioned with high frequencies. Is there a forum discussion about this?
This is just incredible, Leon - thank you for this. The 80s stuff resonates so much for me. Question: I'm currently well into working on a guitar cover of Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart". I can get a great clean plastic tone to do the right side of the arpegiatted riff that immediately follows the guitar solo, but on the left side, and throughout the rest of the song as a rhythm part, there is also a great (palm-muted) version of the same arpegiatted riff, that also has some grit, and while I can get a general tone like that from my Axe-FX III Mk II Turbo, the original Yes recorded rhythm tone has a certain "plucked string" sound to it, and that is what I am struggling to reproduce. To my ear, it might well result from a delay setting, but I haven't been able to find that magic delay setting. Any clues or suggestions to achieving that specific tone? It's very similar to Andy Summers' rhythm tone from the main verse riff of The Police's "Every Breath You Take", but I think the delay settings may be different on "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Thanks in advance for any insight you might have on this one!!!
I'm a simple man, I see plastic I'm happy, I hear plastic I'm happy. What would Pamela be without it... As you said, you either like it or hate it. There's nothing in between
I am using a Marshall SV20H tube amplifier and a Marshall SV212 cabinet. I'm having trouble using the Fractal AX-FX III digital effects processor with a Marshall SV20H amp with a Marshall SV212 cabinet connected. I connected a Fractal AX-FX III digital effects processor to the SV20H as shown on page 27 (FOUR-CABLE METHOD (“4CM”) and page 28 (FX PROCESSOR ONLY (“POST”) of the manual (AX-FX III manual), unplugging the Amp or Cab blocks However, the guitar sounds pure guitar sound, but none of the AX-FX III presets are working. Are you not sure how to make all the effects of the processor presets work? You are using Fractal AX-FX III on your video channels. Have you connected the AX-FX III to a tube amplifier?
Are you still doing Q&A? I’m diving headfirst into the Axe-Fx III content... What’s the best way to use the Axe-Fx in a live context? I’m sure you’ve already got a video here on that topic...
I prefer to run direct with in ears these days, but if you're just starting out and used to real amps a power amp and cab is a great way to bridge the gap live
If this isn't your idea of heaven then I fear I must quote that age old line _T'is better to 80's rock in hell than live in heaven_ or something like that. The best thing is that here I am visiting an old friend in my old _Subdivision_ I grew up in during the 80's and Leon is hitting me with this video cementing my belief that the 80's was indeed the penultimate time to grow up in! 11:35 is right out of Ram it Down so play that _Leon be good_ chugging down that track!
I have no idea where people get the idea that the 80s were all about racks and direct recording. Not even Depeche Mode was that depraved. You must be listening to Amy Grant or something.

Thanks, you too!
Great stuff mate! Sounds surprisingly good with that lead tone too, basically the sound of every lead guitar in 80s action films haha....
"LA Cop Movie Music" needs to be a genre
As 80s as a gated snare with too much bottom mic. Love it.
Now we're talking. POW!
@@LeonTodd research the story on how Phil Collins "discovered' the way to get that gated snare drum sound. It was a very happy accident

I hear lots of mix bus compression going on with both those tracks that really makes the clean guitar and rhythm section "glue" to one another.
