Learn a language means to attain the chosen skills of the language.
Study a language means to improve the chosen skills of the language.
Learn to do something means to become able to do something.
There are 5 language skills:
- reading comprehension: your skill of reading texts and understand it.
- listening comprehension: your skiil of listening to speech and understand it.
- readlistening comprehension: your skill of readlistening to audiotexts and understand it. Audiotext is a text with its version in speech and you can read the text and listen to the speech at the same time. As for readlisten, it means to read a text and listen to the speech version of the text at the same time. Audiotexts may be videos in english with subtitles in English, audios with transcription, etc.
- speaking communication: your skill of communicating to others using speaking.
- writing communication: your skill of communicating to others using writing.
In order to learn these skills, you must study them correctly. Unfortunately, a lot of people who desire to learn one or more of these skills can't do it successfully because they don't study correctly and don't know why they can't learn. i've been through this difficulty before, but eventually I find out that the correct way to learn languages is the same we learned our native language and we learned it unconsciously, so we don't recognize the real way of learning.
These are the correct way of learning these 5 skills:
- reading comprehension: read a lot of English(for instance) by paying attention to what you're reading until you get used to as much as possible of English.
- listening comprehension: listen to a lot of English by paying attention to what you're listening to until you get used to as much as possible of English.
- readlistening comprehension: readlisten to a lot of English by paying attention to both audio and text until you get used to as much as possible of English. It teaches you the correct pronounce of what you're reading and helps you to improve listening easier.
- speaking communication: actually, in order to learn it, you have to listen to a lot of comprehensible English speech by paying attention to what you are listening to. As a result, you learn to speak sentences with many vocabs and good pronounciation naturally, without thinking about what words you wanna speak and without using mental translation to form sentences in English.
- writing communication: You have to read a lot of comprehensible english texts by paying attention to what you are reading. As a result, you become able to write texts with correct ortography and grammar. I am a portuguese speaking person from Brazil, I learned a bit of English as a second language using the correct way of learning languages and there was no need to write what I mean in English translating from Portuguese to English.
This is the truth about language learning, you probably believe in different methods, but every people from the world who learned any languages learned the languages in the correct way. I hope this to be useful for you and helps you to learn the languages you want. we only understand what we are used to lisen and read. i wanna know your comments about this. :)

I would also like to add being able to express yourself. Not just "I am happy, or I am sad," but also be able to explain why. The quicker you are able to express your emotions in your target language, the quicker you can start functioning in the language.

IMO that's the first sing that you are (or about to become) fluent in the language, when you can be yourself while speaking that language.
How to Stay Motivated When Learning a Language (Transcrição)
1 - In my experience, the difference between people who are successful at learning languages and people who are not is this: People who often give up approach learning languages with a couple of specific questions. They often want to know: How long exactly is this going to take me to do and how much of my time am I going to have to give every day in order to be able to do this.
2 - The reason why is because they don’t really like learning languages. They like speaking languages and they like the idea of the benefits of it, but they’re not necessarily enjoying the process of learning them. In order to make your language-learning a lot more fun, I think you should focus onthe things that interest you the most.
3 - If you want to learn the language to learn more about the culture, then you should be watching films, you should be reading and enjoying those things that are available. It’s also important to reward yourself for the learning that you’re doing, so make surethat you give yourself a little treat and maybe even plan a holiday or a trip to the country where they speak the language, so you can actuallysee how much progress you’ve made since you started learning and how far you could still come in a similar amount of time.
4 - The other really important thing is to set realistic goalswhen thinking about learning a language. That well may keep you much more motivated through the language-learning process and make sure that you stick to the commitment that you make. So, an example of an unrealistic goal is: ‘I want to be able to speak German fluently.’ That’s very, very difficult to achieve and it’s gonna take you a long time.
5 - But an example of a realistic goal would be something like: ‘I would like to have a ten-minute conversation with a native speaker about something very simple and easy.’ Or, for example: ‘I want to be able to watch the news and understand fifty per cent of it.’ That’s something that is very clear and that you could work towards in order to make sure that you keep seeing how much progress you make.

I think that building quick confidence is a key factor. As boring as it might seem, learning how to introduce and talk about yourself in your target language helps to build quick language confidence as these are words that are most likely to stick at first.

robert Last I'm also learning Italian, personally I always find the basics the hardest. You can't really interact with natives yet and sometimes it seems you're never going to understand it. Here's to hoping we won't give up because Italian is an amazing language 😜
I grew up listening to Italian and speaking a little bit here and there, I was fluent when I was around 6, but then I lost it. I'm trying relearn it right now. I find reading fluently hard.

I'm a Spanish native speaker and learned English when I was really young. So last year I wanted to challenge myself and started to take french lesson with a teacher, she's so nice and since I'm her only student we go at my path but also she demands me more because she says I can do it. One thing she told me is that When you finally get a level on any language and you start learning another one, naturally your level on the first one is going to improve faster. Now since I've been studying french for 8 months and got an A1, I thought I could start with another language that isn't similar to that one, so I'm leaning Korean (because I feel like it is easier than Japanese) and I then, when I finish French that I expect it to be in two or three years, I might start with Italian, and then I hope that around 5 or 6 years it takes me to learn Korean, so then maybe I'll finally begin learning Japanese. But for now it's just a dream, but a realistic dream at least.

My realistic goal that kept me motivated for learning Korean:
Watch a 10 minute + bts video without subtitles and understanding everything they say.

Definitely agree with go with what you're interested in. Most of my students who grow the fastest do just that. On top of that I'd add focus: I'm interested in tons of stuff, but I find that when I hone in on just one or two things (like, say, learning how to talk about my job or playing a particular game) I grow a lot faster.
it is important to create a support system as well. try to find at least one person (preferably a native) with whom you can use the language, that way you lern from eachother and stay motivated
Last thing, pick a language you have some type of connection to. I learned Spanish and French because they were the first two foreign countries that I visited. Spanish was also widely spoken in my school growing up and in my neighborhood. I had deep connections to both languages. I learned Arabic because of the military and then living in the Middle East for 7 years working as an IT contractor. I personal connections to the languages and that is why I was able to stick with them. I had a deep reason; the languages brought something special in my life.

I also agree with focusing on a niche area. When I was learning my first second language, Spanish, I focused on the fashion industry. I love fashion and it made learning the language fun and it allowed the words to stick. I was able to start reading fashion blogs and magazines in Spanish at a much quicker pace and a lot sooner. Again....build language confidence.

Personally, I have a passion for learning languages, especially Italian. I love this language so much. It's so beautiful and systematic at the same time. Italian culture and cuisine motivate me to practice it. I was obliged to learn English by the Thai Ministry of Education, saying it is very important to learn this language. If you don't know it, you'll lose job opportunities in the future. Sometimes, we lose a good chance to learn other languages.
i enjoy listening to the music of the language im learning and also trying to translate my daily communication in the respective language in my head at least!

I'm learning english (so maybe i write some things wrong), but my tip is: dont study grammar, it's not is a efficient way for learning a language. learn by reading, listening, absorb the language. The babies did not learning speak a language studying grammar kkkkkkkkkkk ('kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk" is a form of laugh in Brazil). Your video motivate me to learn more. Currently I want to learn Korean language. I learn through watch a lot of Korean drama, songs, RUclips video and some of the books or post (online). Now I able to know 50% of what Korean speaking. But still a long way to go.

I speak Dutch, German (both native), I speak fluent English, and I can speak French. I am learning Zulu and I know a little bit of Italian and Spanish. (by the way, I'm 15 years old and dyslectic. So if I can speak those languages with my dyslexia and age, Y'all can do it too!)

Being fluent in German is not an unrealistic goal, it's a long-term goal.
He meant trying to become fluent in a short period of time, and that the solution is chunking the big goal into small realistic goals

Once upon a time we had a colleagues from USA and Australia, at that time i was very good in speaking English while talking to them, but now when they are not with us i am loosing my English fluency. as you suggest to have 10 minutes conversation with native English speaker, but could you please introduce us to somewhere we can speak to the native English speaker. thanks

I quit to learn any language if I don’t understand in my mind clearly but I already know 3 languages (Hindi, Nepali and English) so I don’t need it in my personal opinion I think.

the government put in a rule that you have to learn at least 1 language for gcse if you get certain grades, which is fair enough. I've been learning French for 4 years (I would have chosen Spanish but I didn't get to choose) and still can't hold a conversation. My exams are in 7 months so I need to start learning NOW lol

Hey! I too am learning japanese. All i can say is learn the hiragana first, then move onto learning vocabulary and sentence structure/grammar. Another tip is to listen to recorded japanese conversations. Stick at it, it will be hard but you csn do it.
