About the series:
As a co-op, we believe that a life outdoors is a live well lived. We’re dedicated to protecting and advocating for the lands we love, and that starts with understanding the macro issues and trends that impact these outdoor places and the people who recreate in them. The 'In Our Nature' series is created to help us all become more informed and active stewards of the environment. Have a topic you’d like us to explore? Let us know in the comments below.
I so agree! We all need nature in any form to enrich our lives and bring us a bit of peace! 🌳🌲🌳
I never thought I'd ever advocate for "urban hiking" but it's better than nothing. Super cool
We think making the effort to get outside is worth it everywhere!
I have just retired from an inside job. I am taking my outdoor life back. I can walk outside my door and join a paved greenway (Portneuf Greenway) system or walk about a mile to climb into high desert mountains. I feel blessed. Shared the greenway with a badger last week 😲
That sounds idyllic! Enjoying the outdoors is important at any stage in life.
Erin. You got me at: “I wanna know what the future of the outdoors look like”
Catching a sunset during the workweek is the easiest way for me to feel grounded and reconnected with nature, even if it’s from my street level apartment balcony!
Great video. We actually paused it to ride our bikes across the road to watch the sunset tonight😉 We are lucky to live where 'we' live and it influences our decision about where we would consider moving to if we ever needed to move!!
another well-shot, thought-provoking episode!
maybe an episode on different majors/careers that help solve/work towards environmental issues? or a 50-series thing titled "Erin in Every State"
We appreciate your kudos and your suggestions, Sejun. Thank you for watching.
This is so inspiring! I love seeing how urban places are taking advantage of the outdoors.
I love my bike.. there’s a quote somewhere that says “a bicycle is the solution to a lot of the worlds problems“
Less pollution
Healthier people
Less noise
Less crowded streets
Less parking lots and parking issues
Car-$30,000+. Good bike-$500+
No insurance
No fuel costs
Next to no maintenance
Etc etc
I know that we need vehicles for longer distance trips and food delivery etc, and I know that weather is a big issue but think how different the world would be if we designed our cities if bikes were the most common mode of transport.. and think how fewer health issues we’d have and how much more money we’d have in the bank
And if you bike commute you also get to spend some time outside everyday (weather is sometime bad but as you go inside afterwards it's only temporary discomfort).
What’s hard is the shift towards that. I wanna get out and ride my bike places, but I’m scared of crazy Colorado drivers. Can’t wait until cities really are set up for safe bike travel. I’ll be down for it.
Cities need to be updated with better layout for cleaner and efficient transportation for the common people. South Korea is really easy to get around.
Super interesting stuff, these kinds of conversations are my favourite kind! In a similar zone, the topic of community farms within major cities would be a cool one to cover! And often they get schools and children involved in not just the outdoors but planting and growing food - that they can later eat - outside with water and sunlight
Some really creative solutions to getting people outdoors in this video. Loved the people that were interviewed
Loving this video series! Way to go Erin!
I'm loving this series! I usually dislike vloging style cinematography because to me it looks cheap/unprofessional but I got to say you guys pulled it off!
Thanks for the kudos! We believe these messages are incredibly important and hope you've learned something new.
Going to watch the sun set tonight!
I am using this video to start my Outdoor Education class that we offer in our high school through the Health and Physical Education Department. I would be interested to follow more videos from this series, keep them coming!
Great video on cities learning/trying to create outdoor spaces, thanks!💐 You also NEED to know about Philadelphia, PA’s well-developed FAIRMONT PARK system, in my view Philly’s greatest single asset!! It is HUGE, it includes WATERWAYS (like the Wissahickon Creek) and HIKING & BIKING trails & paths, and it also includes scores (if not hundreds) of acres of WILD TREES... in some places you can park your car, walk a tenth of a mile, and be deep in a forest. I live in this city but I am not an “urbanite,” so I feel quite out of place and off-kilter in such an urban, human-fabricated environment. FAIRMONT Park is why I experience deep and frequent delight in spite of Philadelphia’s crowded city landscape! Thanks again!
Thank you for watching and mentioning those outdoor spaces in Philadelphia.
Thank you for making this video. A very important topic.
I think I have an interesting idea to bring up later on in this series!
I know it was briefly mentioned in the video, but there's quite a bit of depth the benefits of being in nature. We, especially your viewership, probably just take for granted that being outdoors is good for you, but the whys and hows would be neat to get into. I know of a body of research looking into the psychological benefits of the outdoors. I took a university course on the subject up here in Canada, and I think it'll be interesting to see a video dedicated to the subject. There's also some studies done on physiological benefits, perhaps indicating a very real type of "symbiotic" relationship between us and plants.
For a moment though that I was watching Vox channel until instead of vox was REI logo hahaha great video! And yes is concerning this topic, is sad that almost all people that I know refuses or doesn’t like to come along with me outside to hike 🙃
Is there a reason that you show a German map in the intro? Just wondering. I really like this series, great job Erin and RAI
i rarely hike more than once on the weekend but now i want to challenge myself
95% of life inside is disgusting haha. Sad but true.
I thought it was going to say "Are we stuck inside a simulation?" lol
