    God, how I miss the original theme tune! And out of all the opening closing credit sequences they used throughout the years, I always thought this was the best one. The ambulance driving off into a dark and uncertain city against over a haunting theme tune summarized what Casualty is all about - dedicated folk going out to do a grim and upsetting job, providing a lifeline for those who are trapped, injured, frightened and in need of help.

    As a -Bristolian- Holbonian local historian I looked over this intro for about two hours and figured out that the ambulance is going down Sylvia ave and turns into Ravenhill rd at the roundabout. The silhouettes of the buildings and where they are in the city matches up and the terrace of inter-war houses has the second house in the row as the only house with a chimney (Same as in the outro if you look closely). You can also see that after dissapearing for about a second, the ambulance's lights appear again and it's curving left with the road, which is true for Ravenhill rd.

    Try this series of images on for size as you listen. 1:16 A patient is rushed into A&E on a gurney and the team is told he needs emergency surgery. 1:24 Duffy measures out the anesthetic and injects him. "Alright, Mr Johnson. Start counting down from 100." 1:33 The patient begins counting down. "One hundred, ninety-nine, ninety-eight, ninety-s..." 1:40 The patient groggily asks; "Nurse... I will be alright, won't I?" His eyelids flicker shut. Duffy sighs. 1:44 "I hope so, Mr Johnson. I hope so..."

    Severe element of fear and despair listening to this as a kid but deep down knowing it was special even though it scared the life out of me.Story lines were perhaps more intense in the 90s as well. After my beautiful Daughter had open heart surgery I took a step back from anything hospital related. There is no getting away from this being one of the best sounds of all time though.

    I loved those solemn horns building up to the theme at the start, gave a perspective of the mix of emergencies and tragedies being evaluated at the end (though ironically it's for a happier ending here :P).
    The original theme was the top one, not just for that great 80s synth, but for the noticably sadder more mournful tone, which kinda fits a premise which is doomed to be hit and miss in terms of saving everyone in the end, even the main stars. The end credits theme almost sounds like a funeral march due to its slower pace and sadder strings and fade out.

    • @ismayb754
      @ismayb754 Год назад

      The haunting horns leading into the closing theme were so effective and should never have been dropped.

    • @e-122psi3
      @e-122psi3 Год назад

      @@ismayb754 It's kind of reminiscent of the sad piano build up in some episodes of Eastenders or, for a funnier childhood one, the closing cresendo from the 80s Thomas the Tank Engine episodes, this rather dramatic closing fanfare as the story and characters bow out.

    The current theme variation, as of 09/08/2014, is absolutely awful. The theme here is the one they should have stuck to, and in my opinion, is the best out of all of them since it's launch way back in 1986. :)
