As a born in and having spent many years in the Cult and served as an MS I can attest to the fact that the vast majority of JW's never study or question anything beyond having a magazine underlined for appearance's sake. It's almost as though the constant indoctrination (and in many cases since childhood) entrapment and peer pressure and the threat of discipline will preclude any thoughts of investigating or studying to prove any claims they make. Questioning is out and any in-depth study would be best kept to yourself if you want to avoid any raised eyebrows of the always present watchful eye of Elders.
100% true. It's probably the #1 thing that blew me away about my time in JW's. It's like being a brain surgeon (life or death, right?) but never reading the manual. They just repeat what they hear at meetings.

I remember the very first time I questioned the religion. I was 8 years old and listening to a Sunday talk and the brother said “We are not a cult and we don’t brainwash our members.” I just remember thinking why would they even say that? Well a lifetime later, now I know why.
I had similar questions early as well. The tacit denial gives pause.... after years as a JW, there is usually a moment that jolts you; that's when you may realize the 3 weekly meetings and endless propaganda was subtle damage. It's tried and true cult technique
@@survivingparadisepodcast I can tell you for sure the moment that jolted me was when I was in a judicial committee at 12 years old and had to confront my rapist. One of the elders read a scripture, looked me in the eyes and told me to leave the matter in Jehovah’s hands. All those elders had known me since I was a baby. I never felt so betrayed.

I ended up holding her while the other two elders sat their silent....I'm eventually going to share that story. NO child, much less female, should be alone with elders!!!! Horrible, I'm so sorry

When I was fairly new in the religion (AKA CULT!), I expressed to one elder that I was going to start reading the older publications so that I would be better informed about the history of JWs. Well, I was immediately discouraged from doing this and strongly encouraged to keep up with all the "new" literature. Looking back, that was a red flag that I ignored! Rats!

One of the most bizarre things about JW's is how they hold on to life altering 'beliefs' but never actually read or study. Millions of them have never even read the book they claim comes from god. Oh, 'new light'.....it's coming :)
I love the way you encourage anyone to just read old jw books, unfortunately like a frog in cold to boiling water the changes go unnoticed or dismissed by the elderly.

I had it ALL. BIG mistake....you have treasure at your hands, all their insanity is right under their noses. They just know most won't read it or study. Show up to a meeting; rinse repeat everything they're told.

I was around in the early 80’s and was a “true believer”. I don’t recall even thinking about the faithful and discreet slave. What I do recall was that the WT President was a big deal. I attended a talk by Franz and the JWs had a “mystique” perspective about him. And he was impressive in a “culty-way”. But, the current Governing Body are so unimpressive. Herd is “dull-as-dirt”, Lett seems “mental”, and Splane’s explanation of the overlapping generation with a pointer stick is so “cringy” (pretending to be scholarly when he’s speaking nonsense).
I hope that JWs wake up to this control mechanism of a Governing Body and just move on to live their lives to their fullest potential.

All true Jay! Franz had a 'mystical' air about him among JW's. He at least put on pretense of 'depth' even if it was all insane. The current group can't tie their shoes. It's incredible. I was 6 when my parents were baptized in 1961. I finally escaped in 2001. Such a wasted life. There were still alot of partakers untilthe early seventies and I agree that most were women. I think many of the old long serving members knew JFR was a fraud and charletan. I imagine that Nathan Knorr was probably not as angelic as most people thought at the time, but I think he worked pretty hard to save a limping organization. I met him twice as a young boy and went in the field service with him once to a couple of doors. He really made us all feel so positive about the organization. The disrespect for women that always existed in the truth but became even more pronouned as I aged was the single biggest reason I couldn't stay.
I really appreciate your work, your insight reasonable discussion is appreciated. I sincerely hope you can continue to inspire people to think for themselves.

So true Phil! We would race to get the pudding and a cheese danish! I was a volunteer in the 'sound dept.' as a kid. It gave me free reign to walk around the hallways as a teenager and look for cute 'sisters' LOL
I have so many hacks for teenager trying to survive. The mic grind to get to sit in the back. Once back there the meetings flew by. Haha. It is things that we just can't talk about with most people. There was a way to check out if you convinced them you were on page. Conventions and assemblies dodged by being Auidio or meal prep. Qwik Builds were huge points but fun. I’m pretty sure Ole JF also said that Holy Spirit wasn’t guiding him, but it was the angels themselves commissioning the work.
My man, u didn’t hit on 5% of the the “spiritual truths” that was being disseminated in the publications. When I got a hold of all the older literature, and i painstakingly worked 9 hrs secularly, and came home & read another 6-7 hrs worth of literature, it created a vortex of a rabbit hole.
I was absolutely shocked & it was clear why the organization bans its rank & file members from reading this “old light.” Honestly, I couldn’t see how a minority or a woman could be apart of the religion, & members have no idea that some of that old light is used today.
1000% agree that 90% of JWs don’t study, & the study that is being done is strictly regurgitating WT verbiage. They have been conditioned to just listen, & obey. I asked about 20 JWs b4 I left who their mediator was, and all 20 said Jesus. None were apart of the proclaimed 144k, & none knew that despite what the Bible says, the organization does not teach that.
100% why they killed the literature in KH's.....they don't want people digging into it. But the stuff they still have online is still pretty shocking. I predict they will only give access to literature going back 10 years very soon. They don't want people digging in.

Just found you and binging. I have never been JW but became very interested on what they (and Mormons etc) actually do believe through ex members.
Its bizarre, 144 000 is taken literally in revelation (taking anything literally there is risky anyway) but the verses below that explain these are Jews from each of the 12 tribes (12x 12000 not symbolic type numbers at all) is not literal at all.
And when I learned about the Faithful and Discreet Slave teaching.... based on a punch line in a parable, even the Bible says it was a story. And what fever dream connected 'well done good and faithful servant' into 'chosen to run the only real truth'???
True that majority don't study. In my 30 years i will say that I was in depth in my study the first 3 to 4 years. After that I got in the typical habit of glancing over and underlining answers. I believe it's because we're trained to "listen and obey" what the slave says, so why study. Deep study will inevitability lead you to different conclusions that don't align with "the slave" so you just wait on the answers like a zombie and tow the line.
It's absolutely a program that plays on human weaknesses...including be lazy in thought!

Millions of jws live their life everyday by the decrees of this self appointed group. All of this nonsense may be considered old light but think about this. Today jws are reminded that there will be a time when they are asked to do something that may not seem right or intelligent from a human standpoint. What does this leave out?
