That’s the definition of an angel. She’s willing to sacrifice her entire life to help these people have a good life. It’s just not something you see anymore these days.
I'm highly disturbed and disheartened that the people of the CHURCH made fun of him and made him stop going. I'm not a religious person, nor a church goer, but it still hurt my heart.
I've met alot of terrible people thay goes to church. I've also met some of the most genuine people who'd been beaten at every corner of their life, those people were the most understanding most compassionate human beings I've got the privilege to know. What I took away from this life experience is it is not your beliefs or religion, where you're from, or where you stand in your social circle, but it is how you treat others with a level of compassion that shows what kind of human being you really are.
They do it everywhere, they also spread messages of hate and fear to young children and I've seen them be torn apart as adolescence hits. I think they are they real "sinners" if there even is such a thing.
Betty is such a selfless human being. She dedicated her entire life to taking care of her special needs siblings. She is the glue that holds everyone together
Well... Yes and no.... I think she very much needs to be there we well... Shes very slow.... She's one of the highest functioning out of the family it looks like... At least the ones that stayed but .... Not all the cog's are turning up there either, no offense ... I'm not trying to talk bad about her or anything it just seems like she has her own battles to fight.
The way ray talks about Freddy is so cute and sad. And before you jump down my throat. If you try to say I’m being mean and he’s not talking, you’ve never known a nonverbal- but verbal person.
I doubt this comment will be seen, but I’m a Shady Spring, WV native born and raised here. Myself and several others would love to volunteer our time if they have any more supplies to do work on their house.
As an ex teacher of special needs , I agree. He's definitely dying for social interaction & there is an outgoing personality struggling to get out. The barking seems to me he spent too much time as a child with no verbal interaction from those around him so started imitating the dogs. A few sessions a week with a primary school teacher & a speech therapist would probably be all is needed.
If Ray were given a camera, I'd be incredibly curious to see what he would take photos of. What people photograph is a great insight to what someone is attentive to. For someone that doesn't speak it could be really insightful.
I was thinking of something similar. My second thought was that it would be all pictures taken from the porch. I do wonder. I would love to see if a sort of kids game with words and pictures would help the three to say what they feel and answer questions. I worry that they're all going to be committed if anything happens to the older sister. They would probably all follow quickly. Jesus, this all just guts me.
Betty is absolutely heroic. If you've been the sole caretaker of a family member you would understand. The will of this woman to keep her brothers and sisters alive is incredible.
@JH1234 All said was partly true Im thinking...She still chose in one way or another, given the chance to leave she may not(as in heres ya a male companion etc)... Lifes complexities.Given several other options, she may have just chosen the same ,to stay...aHer obligation to see her siblings cared for knowing noone else would be able to do the job.I think shes seen as a heroe because if Betty doesnt take care of them whoelse will. Also it doent necessarily mean shes not bitter or doesnt complain...its just we dont see it per the camera.Sometimes we suffer because we think of others and the need to see that they are o.k.

I actually feel bad for Betty. She basically gave up her whole life to become a caregiver and is isolated from basically the whole world besides her family. I really empathize with people who have to raise and take care of people with severe disabilities, it’s not easy at all.
I feel for Betty too, and actually relate to her alot. I have a husband and 3 boys of my own, I also care for my grandma, and my mother. I am 27yrs old. I have no life, except caring for my family. I have three sisters and not a single one helps care for mom and grandma. One of my sisters is an addict and I help her out sometimes too. Its exhausting. And with the pandemic, i had all my kids home learning...its just wild. To give up your own life to take care of loved ones...it isn't easy. But I definitely have a leg up on Betty, living in the modern world and all. She's a very selfless woman ❤
Yes I felt the worse for her because she has all her faculties and wit. It seems like a lonely world for her no love like that from a significant other not family. 😳❤️
She didn’t have to. That’s where she wants to be. Co-dependency is a thing. If she were not there they might all be in clean facilities living a much better life.
Let’s not forget that this woman was the one of the 16 siblings who stayed behind to look after her siblings and nephew for her dying mother. She has more heart and compassion than many others who would have walked away too. They aren’t that uncivilized. Just look that way
$30k for a tin roof ? And some medical bills?? Someone took advantage of them. They need help getting things fixed....if you just throw money at them...I mean...what u expect. man, Ray kept smiling through the whole video. He's so happy and excited that Mark came back. I wish people could help this family more. Ray's smile melted my whole heart.
I am a health care provider, for ppl with disabilities. Ray could have learned to communicate a lot more. Had he had early intervention, he is very smart. You could tell he want to say so much, he is just a very happy person. It is very interesting to watch and notice how much could have been done for all of them. They understand everything you are saying, they just can't communicate.
@@loomibiq In the US you are put on a tier 1,2 and 3. Depending on what tier you fall, is the amount you get for Services. Ray needs an AAC device so that he can communicate expressively! I’m a speech pathologist and work with nonverbal patients who have strong receptive language skills like Ray. If someone could get him an iPad with AAC app on it that’s voice generating- he could have access to so much more expressive language!
I've worked with disabled people, and I have to say that this family, even in their incredible poverty, takes better care of one another than many able bodied families care for their disabled family members. They are very accepting and compassionate to one another.
There's no reason for them to be living like that. Obviously there is at least four social security checks going into that house. Plus they have food stamps and Medicaid probably. They have enough money to live better than that they are not poor. I live alone in a one-bedroom house and I get one social security check a month plus food stamps. And I live way better than they do my house is nice and clean I have enough money to buy good clothes and keep my house clean and everything. I'm wondering what are they doing with all that money. They should be getting $800 a piece in social security checks. I have plenty of money to pay my bills keep food on the table. Plus have money left over. I'm not rich but I live comfortably.

@@ruthbashford3176 I saw on an obituary I found for one of their siblings that there are several siblings living in other cities, a couple of whom are married. I'm sure they are all somewhat mentally ill, but they may be more like Betty than Ray.
She spent her life paying for her parents poor decisions. It's really just a shame and I wouldn't do it. Did I hear them say 15 kids?? That's reckless stupidity even without the inbreeding.
Thank you for being so kind to this family. I also love the way that the many people commenting are also loving, understanding and thoughtful. I'll repeat what others have said,"They didn't ask to to be born this way." What loyalty and devotion is shown by Betty. That's very rare.
Betty is an amazing person. She may come off quick and rude and ungrateful, but that seems to just be the way she communicates and clearly means nothing by it after you watch a few videos. Although I feel very sorry for Ray, Timmy, and Loraine I almost envy their blissful ignorance. They literally have one of the worst lifes imaginable, but they wake up everyday happy and don't even realize it. Yet at the same time we have millionaires with what seems like the perfect life commiting suicide everyday. I think that is what draws me to these videos the most.

I feel like Ray actually knows what he wants to say, he just can't say it. He seems to be imitating the dogs, but he definitely understands the questions and he's answering in his own language
After the age of 14, it is nearly impossible to learn someone to speak a language. I am deeply facinated as to why he does not speak. This is a facinating family, and I just want to watch more and learn.
He actually doesn't because the way his brain is set up. No matter how yall try to butter it up, Ray is mentally incompetent and unable to think like a normal person due to inbreeding.
she might also understand, it wouldn't be a good idea to continue the bloodline, as its well, you know. she seems to be the most "normal" out of all of them
And she's done the best she can. Mark gave her money to fix up the house, repairs. She had a new roof put on among other things. They have an older brother who built a small house beside them who cooks for them ect. His mind is pretty sharp compared to his other siblings 🥰

Ray is sitting so politely and attentively listening. Rays soul warms my heart and his smile is infectious. I wish they could have more interactions with others.
I wouldn’t. The neighbors and some local deputies said they don’t want just random strangers coming to visit them. Let them know you care in little ways, talk to the folks they already know and trust, but also respect their privacy and don’t just wander up there cause they won’t understand. They might think you’re trying to make a show out of them. It’s an evil world and they know it just as much as we do.
Thank you for talking to Timmy, Lorraine, and Ray like adult human beings. People don't realize how much of a difference that makes to someone with disabilities. And working to understand them too instead of dismiss their words! Thank you for helping them and bringing their world to us in the most respectful way ❤️
The manner in which Mark engaged them in conversation reminds me of when my grandmother was suffering from dementia after a horrible stroke. She lost her attention span, and it was nearly impossible to talk about anything other than the here and now. When Mark asks Betty some probing questions like "what was your childhood like?" / "can you tell me about your parents?" / "any words of wisdom?" / "favorite memories?" / "what are Ray's interests?" / "what do you do in a typical day?", she'll look like she's processing and thinking. Then she'll respond without any substance: "not much", "not really", "no", without elaboration. Very surface level: need to keep it at "oh, you look healthy!" / "oh, it's so nice out!" / etc

I have always liked the pic of their parents and of ray and freddy and their nephew freddy has such a warm beautiful smile that just spreads sunshine when you look at him very handsome man i wish yall had more earlier interviews that you could show when freddy was alive and their parents
You can really see a difference in facial expression this time around, they are thrilled to have Mark back, as he genuinely wants to know them and help them. They look at him with such a tender expression, im sure not many people are blessed with that courtesy
I wish I had someone like mark helping me. I have scoliosis and lost everything that I had because of it. It really sucks not to be able to do what I used to which is why I don't sing professionally anymore. Scoliosis is a killer. And it almost killed me.......

i came to the comments out of curiosity, and i was very happily surprised with the amount of compassion i saw. gave me a little bit more hope for humanity. ❤
As sad as these people's condition is, I'm glad they live out in a peaceful area like they do. I can only imagine how horrifying a city would be for these folks.
This would be less likely to happen in a city because cities are usually funded and the origins of what led this family here would have been better supported in a city to reroute the outcome of these now adults. We need each other and this documentary shows us that. We are all deserving of care, education, nutrient rich food, and shelter. Without these things we go back to the olden times having tons of children just to make bread to bake bread.
The number of kind and sensitive comments for this video are overwhelming. Hard to find any derogatory comments..It’s encouraging to know that humanity still exists and that most people have kindness in their hearts.
I was shocked at first, but after I watched for a minute I see people who have been dealt a raw deal. But they love each other and do what they can to live a decent life. I will include them tonight in my prayers.
I think that is in large part due to the documentarian, who treats them like equals and gives them dignity. But also does speak well to the fact there are lots of good and decent humans out here. Of course, the news and pop culture would have us believe differently.
I mean, they're still people, they're just horrifically inbred, they didnt choose to be that way. You'd think they'd have realized at some point that having kids with your relatives is a bad idea, but if they've always been that way, maybe its like a local tradition.
@@BullseyeBenR Did you miss the part where there were 16 children? Plenty of them moved away back to Virginia as she stated in the video. She most definitely sacrificed for her siblings and nephew. Betty clearly is of sound mind, maybe a bit uneducated, but she said her self she never graduated high school in the last video.
Even so she didn’t state how many were miscarried and or survived. Not finishing high school she still didn’t have a lot of options. My heart goes out for them and I don’t blame them for being born into poverty!
Ray is so sweet, he tries to hard to communicate but is so restricted. I feel so bad for him, he wants to hang out with you and talk but doesn’t know how to get the words across. I’m so glad you asked him to show you around. It seemed like he was very excited about his bed ☹️
I thought seeing this family would be depressing or even frightening to some degree, but you can really feel the love they have for each other. Ray in particular is clearly a very kind and gentle soul. I would love to see him have some form of communication, he seems like he would have a lot to say given the opportunity.
Can you imagine being asked by your parents to basically give up your life to care for your disabled siblings yet that's what Betty did without hesitation
I feel like back in the olden days that was the regular, usually it's the youngest daughter who doesn't marry and watches out for the family when they get old
I hope anyone with disabled siblings would take care of them after the parents have passed away. How could someone just abandon their disabled siblings?
I love how he speaks to them instead of speaking to Betty for them . He speaks to them like he would any other human . They have so much to say and I wish we could understand them .
I can say with confidence that I am not and could never be as strong as Betty, nor as good of a person. What she's been doing for most of her life is something many of us couldn't do for a single day. What an amazing human being.

I'm highly disturbed and disheartened that the people of the CHURCH made fun of him and made him stop going. I'm not a religious person, nor a church goer, but it still hurt my heart.
Just because someone walks into a church doesn’t make them a person of God.

Ray is dying to communicate. He needs a Speech pathologist and a technological communicative device. He is very capable. He has so much to say.
100% agree. I think he could easily learn to use a communication device if he were given the chance.
He would have said something by now
I know how that feels. I was late to speak when I was a little girl, but I had SO much to say, I just couldn't verbalize any of it.
Yeah ! what do you know .. If only healthcare was free... Oops. You wont find such extreme situations in Europe believe me
When he was asking about family that had passed away and Lorrane said "My Daddy...." I could have cried my eyes out 🥺
Wtf 😂
Time,
If Ray were given a camera, I'd be incredibly curious to see what he would take photos of. What people photograph is a great insight to what someone is attentive to. For someone that doesn't speak it could be really insightful.
Never thought of it that way. This is a great comment. Even tho it makes total sense.
I love this comment.
Awesoe idea
I was thinking of something similar. My second thought was that it would be all pictures taken from the porch. I do wonder.
I would love to see if a sort of kids game with words and pictures would help the three to say what they feel and answer questions.
I worry that they're all going to be committed if anything happens to the older sister. They would probably all follow quickly. Jesus, this all just guts me.
He would definitely be snapping pics of mommas snapper. You can tell that guy fcks
Betty is absolutely heroic. If you've been the sole caretaker of a family member you would understand. The will of this woman to keep her brothers and sisters alive is incredible.
It must be so hard for her at times
God forbid anything should happen to her...
Mike,
You said it all.

All said was partly true Im thinking...She still chose in one way or another, given the chance to leave she may not(as in heres ya a male companion etc)...

It takes a special person to be a caretaker. You have to be very patient. She looks like she's mastered it. ❤
I think she’s just as ill but she can talk
Yes I felt the worse for her because she has all her faculties and wit. It seems like a lonely world for her no love like that from a significant other not family. 😳❤️
She didn’t have to. That’s where she wants to be. Co-dependency is a thing. If she were not there they might all be in clean facilities living a much better life.
Let’s not forget that this woman was the one of the 16 siblings who stayed behind to look after her siblings and nephew for her dying mother. She has more heart and compassion than many others who would have walked away too. They aren’t that uncivilized. Just look that way

Yea it’s like he was never taught how to speak or communicate so all of the animals he heard over the years, he mimics them
Ray needs an AAC device so that he can communicate expressively! I’m a speech pathologist and work with nonverbal patients who have strong receptive language skills like Ray. If someone could get him an iPad with AAC app on it that’s voice generating- he could have access to so much more expressive language!
Their dogs seem well fed, nice and not aggressive which means they are not ill treated. Animals do tell a lot about their keepers.

Yes!!
But should not be living in that condition of a house, are u for real!!!!
I've worked with disabled people, and I have to say that this family, even in their incredible poverty, takes better care of one another than many able bodied families care for their disabled family members. They are very accepting and compassionate to one another.
I love your sentiment, but I don't feel that it's possible to come to your conclusion based solely upon this video.
I totally agree with you.
BULLSHIT
I agree
You made Ray so happy talking about how he’s smart. You can tell he is, he just cannot get his point across sometimes.

I'm so worried about Betty, she's clearly getting older and more frail and they literally depend on her. I hope life treats them well.
I can't see any of them doing well if they were to be institutionalized. This is the only life they have ever known. I hope some of that gofundme gets allocated to finding placement for the family through a trustworthy power of attorney when Betty passes.

I have so much compassion for the Whitakers. They didn't ask to be born into the life they are living. Poverty, isolation, non verbal communication. I know it has to be sooo lonely and depressing day to day but they seem to manage to find happiness in each other and that's so important. Miss Betty has a special place in heaven awaiting her for sacrificing her life to her siblings.

I hope anyone with disabled siblings would take care of them after the parents have passed away. How could someone just abandon their disabled siblings?
I love how he speaks to them instead of speaking to Betty for them . He speaks to them like he would any other human . They have so much to say and I wish we could understand them .
Hey, in a way you can understand them.
Right, even though they can't communicate like they should, you know their brains are probably going a mile a minute, and just can't get it out.
its fascinating how much you can communicate with so little words actually. you completely get everything they say, even without words.
The dogs actually really do look happy and you can tell she really loves them.
You know what they do to the dogs
yeah, they look well fed and happy. very respectable
Dogs are man's BEST friend, never any judgement.
@@toy4tao are you trying to be funny?
The dogs are happy because they can shit inside the house and nobody notices
I can say with confidence that I am not and could never be as strong as Betty, nor as good of a person. What she's been doing for most of her life is something many of us couldn't do for a single day. What an amazing human being.
You’re 100% right. Even people with all the money and resources couldn’t be this fucking strong as her, bless her and thankful for people like her.
Ray clearly wants food... 😭 He's pulling his hair out and eating it!!!
When it's something you've been around for your entire life, you don't have anything else to compare it to.
Ugh how sweet are they all.
"Told momma id never marry to take care of them all."
How selfless. How could anyone be mean to these people.
People out there know how to take care of each other and they are happy to do it
meen je dat echt
Love that rays always smiling and timmy is so animated and really communicates well ... Lorraine seems so sweet...my God bless their hearts all of them .... ❤❤❤
