I love this scene and everyone always remembers the shower part (What’s wrong with me? 😭) but I love seeing the rare bit of lucidity from Grandma Saracen “I’m sure glad you’re here because I think Matthew needs your help.”
Agreed
So i'm sure this is true of plenty of couples out there who followed the show: my gf watched for the soap opera storylines & i watched for the football stuff.
In general, i found the melodrama of the show cheesy most of the time. But tbh - this scene always stands out in my mind as one of the best in the entire series.
just rewatched this episode and thought the same thing about grandma Saracen
This is the best acting that Zack Gilford (Saracen) did the entire series. Made it truly believable. I feel for Matt though he went through a lot.
His acting was really good in the son as well
@@anthonyschuelke2499 im half to check that out a lot of friday night lights players where in transformers or something like THAT movie too
He did
It felt so real.. so raw
When his dad dies is the best acting he ever did. Even got nominated for an Emmy!
His grandmother was the only one who never left his corner.
What about landry
@@ricster_stm pretty sure Landry stopped talking to him for a minute in season 1
Coach Taylor never left him, he took his dream job at a college, coaches leave programs every single day
His grandma had rocks for brains
That's why he couldn't put her in the home.
When the show was actually airing on TV, I wasn't able to catch every single episode. Only years later after actually seeing each episode in their entirely did I really see how amazing the show was. Some seasons are obviously better than others, but the overall show was a masterpiece. I don't know if they'd ever consider some kind of reboot, but I'd be on board with it.
If they do a reboot, I hope they have full 22 episode seasons and outlast its original predecessor.
@@mickeykelly5612 Nah, I don't want a reboot. I want a continuation. Have coach Taylor get offered a head coaching gig in an FCS school. He takes over, you watch him go for recruits, tryouts, practices. While helping these kids through college and trying to keep them on a straight path. I would love that. Kyle Chandler will always be coach Taylor for me lol.
@@Bolt6604 I'm pretty sure that still counts as a reboot. Though with your idea, it wouldn't be "Friday Night Lights" since it'd be a college team. To truly recapture the magic, it'd have to surround a high school team.
@@Bolt6604 I’d rather it be a high school team in Texas. And maybe it has new characters completely or it could have some original characters.
@@Bolt6604 I think an intersting idea for a continuation of the series is coach returns to dillion for the 20th anniversary of the '06 state winning team and winds up coaching his grandson on the panthers. Julie Matt and their children move back to dillon.
The moment everyone was waiting for.
This part kills me. Out of every character. Other than coach Taylor, Matt Saracens story is amazing.
The most relatable character
Always be kind too other's or at least try because you never know what someone is going threw or there personal battles best clip in a tv series ive ever seen great job scene crew
It's always deep with Matt he's the heart of that show
Love me some Matt Saracen!
I know exactly how he feels.
The feeling that everyone leaves you, that you’re not good enough and something’s wrong with you. At least he had a girlfriend. Every girl I ever built up the courage to ask out turned me down flat. At least his coach saw something in him. Mine never did.
Julie didn’t leave him for a “better guy”
She left him for a predator
As the guy who gets left, you don't see it that way. Logically speaking, she either left you because the other guy was better than you, or she truly hated you. Anything else wouldn't make sense.
Me too Matt. Me too
I hadn't seen the seasons yet but I think coach is sometimes angry and rude with him beacuse Matthew is having a realtionship with his daughter and as a father of a young girl, his concerns and worries for her are on point. I will be watching the shoe after 5 days , because I had a paper after 5 days and after that I will be free and this season is on my prior list for sure.
Saracen has the best story arc but everyone too horny for Riggins nobody care abt him, which is ironic bcs that what happened in the series too, everybody pushing matt aside

You blame a child for adults walking out of his life?
@@PeteMcCorvey Julie was an adult?
@@gabrialblast2007 Julia was for the skreets 😅
Doesn’t that usually apply more in romantic relationships or even friendships? I feel like most of the people who left him are adults in his life. Parents who have the responsibility to stay but choose not to and the closest adult male figure in his life chasing his own dreams. Julie was just a confused teenage girl who doesn’t know what she wants and Carlotta was a complicated situation. None of those abandonments have anything to do with Matt as a person or his character. He was a responsible son, dedicated player, and loyal respectful boyfriend so it’s more to say about those people who left than it is on Matt.
That only applies to relationships bud. He's talking about in general. And in his case, you can clearly see it's not something he's doing wrong. The kid is basically a saint who just keeps getting dealt the worst cards possible. There a few people who experience this in real life as well, me being one of them.
Such a powerful scene. Coach Taylor realizes that Matt is just a kid who has been through so much in his life and all the sudden he feels sympathy for him instead of anger, man this show was so great. The characters were so believable and real.
Heartbreaking. Sometimes the good guys can't catch a break.
Agree always try be kind to others as you never know what someone is going threw or personal battles
nice guys finish last.. its very true
Best people in life have rough backgrounds
@@drivingintothedesertuntilt3202 The worst part about this statement, is that the guys are usually amazing people, but then bad stuff starts happening to them for no reason whatsoever... You can live your life as perfectly as possible, but bad luck always wins in the end. :/
Trauma that they we don't fully understand when we're young and when we look back it haunts us. Feel broken and abonmnent alone.
This scene is one of the only redeeming qualities of season 2. No matter how off course season 2 got, Zach Gilford always delivered a powerful performance
I watched season 2 recently and was like what in the world lol. Wonder how it would have went if the writer's strike didn't happen
@@MoonMoon-fx1op A lot of the fundamental issues the season was suffering from came before the writers strike even happened, however, you could see them trying to course correct in the final few episodes
@@machodgdon that's what I'm saying. I wonder if they would have recovered had it not happen. There were too many unfinished stories
isn't this scene from Season 4 or 5 though?
@@jacobedwards5535 naw
One of the greatest scenes in all of tv
And no Matt, Julie didn't leave you for a better guy. Julie left because she was delusional and thought she could do a better.
I'd argue she left because she felt emotionally abandoned by her parents and just wanted her life to implode. It really had nothing to do with the Swede or Matt. She got a dose of reality when she saw where her choices had led her to and quickly stopped the self destruction. Hence by episode 5 that season she was already trying to get back into Matt's good graces.
Regardless of why she did it she left and hung him out to dry… some of the greatest men in history have been brought down by shady women
@@KCLynne if that's true, yet another reason Matt was too good for her.
she's always been selfish. matt's always thought about others.
When ever someone needs help , they turn to Matt.
I just like the fact that you are talking to a fictional character on a show that has been over for 10 years.
Matt's grandmother was the kindest sweetest lady!! When she says "Sure glad you came by because I think Matthew needs your help" she was reaching out for Coach Taylor to step in as a father figure
Loved how he grabbed him like it was his own kid lmao, That was a Dad grab lmao
"Get over here son. Let me tell you sumn"
Matt really was basically Coach’s son-in-law throughout the series.
@@KMC5240 I noticed, I finished it all
@@KMC5240 Julie said the following during season 3 when matt came over for dinner post his demotion "were just a family having dinner talking about football"
😂😂😂😂😂
…coach leaves him for a better quarterback in the next season 👀
His hand was kind of forced there. He was trying to keep his job.
Let me give a dose of how that goes in the real world. My senior year our starting QB was in my grade, he started every game for our team his Junior year, he was first team all conference and we made it to the quarterfinals of state. He is still the only QB in our schools history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. The second game of my senior year we barely beat a team we were supposed to dominate and our coach saw the writing on the walls. He wanted to get the team ready for next year, so he benched our stater and put in our sophomore back up. We were actually significantly worse with this kid but he remained the starter for the rest of the year. My coach let our former starter play running back and he maybe got 5 carries a game, he was actually getting looked at by colleges before the season started. I think that is so much harsher than how Eric handled Matt’s situation
@@stoneharper7038 K, this is a fuckin' show, not real life, let me give you a dose of reality.
@@stoneharper7038 it is but it's equally fucked up if I was the coach I would've just focused a bit more on the underclassmen if that was the case and let the seniors play so they can get the most eyes on them for college and let them enjoy their last year in Highschool. At the end of the day they're just kids.
Well I mean Matt wasn’t delivering and yk iss texas they love football and they wanted McCoy bored demanded it or it’s his job so ion blame him onat one
One of the best things about this show was how much Matt’s grandma had so much respect and love for Taylor. Every time she saw him she could see how much of a good man he was. Other than that. This scene is one of the best scenes in all of this show. Love it all
'Oh My Lord! Coach Taylor!'
The only person that never left Matt was Lorraine.
this was real acting. coach remembered in this moment that matt was still just a child who's been through so much as a teenager. he was carrying the weight of the world on his own for so long.
Yup. Seeing the shift of emotion in him there was perfect. Of all the words to describe Matt, selfish would never be one of them.
This was the absolute best scene of the series. Searched for it years and years hoping to see it spotlighted. Glad it finally is. What a performance.
Matt is one who you would want to have as a friend back in high school
Wrong. The one guy you'd want as a friend for life.

Fire scene. Coach Taylor’s relationship With Matt and Tim is on a whole nother level because they both had a relationship with Julie( I know tims wasn’t romantic but still there) and they both had father issues like the coach.
I always felt as though coach was closer to Vince than Matt eventhough Matt was dating Julie.

It definitely was.
Coach loved Matt like a son the whole series
Yes he did! I know everyone hates on Julie but I’m so happy he ended up as his son in law, what i would give to see a father in law son in law scene with them now, sharing a beer complaining about how the women in their lives are always right lol lol

Thank you guys so much for officially putting this up. My all time favorite scene from this series. The pain is so real.
That scene with the shower made this entire terrible, cursed season completely worth it. Zach Gilford’s a legend!
This time Matt was the one who taught Coach a lesson.
Matt called the play that won state. lol
Honestly, this was such a needed scene. Matt had so much happen to him his character needed to let it out.
As much as Matt didn't show emotion. This was one of the saddest scenes in the whole series
I think Vince talking to his mom in the hospital after she ods is sadder
Matt telling the Taylor’s he hates his dad and buts his anger onto him to be a better person
I just wanted to hug him and say, “Nothing.” I fell for this guy through the TV screen.
I agree! This show always made me cry, so many deep feeling moments. What Matt and Tim go through reflect back on how confusing and hard it is to grow up
Coach felt that he should drop them home and his granny felt that Matthew need his help❤
They would release this clip on Father's Day. Biiiiig onions moment
HANDS down the best moment of the entire second season and a Top 10 moment of the entire series frankly for me.
Such a powerful showcase from both Zach Gilford and Kyle Chandler right here. Everything Matt has gone through with just those first two seasons alone was basically building to this big moment and Coach was able to realize that instantly. The relatability of Matt along with his genuinely good character and heart is what made him easily one of the standout characters of the series for me.
I know many understandably hate Julie even beyond her despicable Season 2 behavior, but Matt got his happy ending in the end and that was good enough for me because I felt like nobody else in the show had earned themselves one more than him.
In a show full of powerful moments this was one of the most powerful ones. I miss this series so much.
Felt this scene when I first saw it years ago, and I still feel it now. 😓
The best scene in tv show history in my opinion
He was kid and as much as coach is great he’s telling him”so many people depend on you” who can Matt depend on HE IS A TEENAGER WHO IS TIRED AND HURT
Best moment in the entire series
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
Selfish? The absolute least selfish person in the series by far. The man always put everyone before himself
Matt and Tim has my heart in this show.
Same
Selfish!!!! Did I hear him say Matt was selfish?
At this moment he was being selfish. He went out and got drunk when he needed to take care of his grandmother. He shouldn’t have to but he did. Everyone he’s ever loved left him. So he did deserve to be a little selfish. But he went a little to far.
One of the most iconic scenes in the all series. Like a father/son moment.
Also Matt’s grandma new he needed help and let coach know. Man how I love this show..
Damn, as a football coach myself I gotta say this scene pulled a tear or two. Being a coach is one of the toughest most rewarding things a person can experience in life. Sometimes we forget how some of these kids have nothing and how much we mean to them.
How did you become a coach and is it a good job?
@@EricNicotera played high school ball. Went to college. Came out and started teaching and coaching. And yea I enjoy it

How long do you think Coach left the water running? Think he brought him a towel after?
I wish we saw a follow through on this scene. I would have loved to have seen more dialogue between Coach and Matt about this scene. Maybe Matt apologizing to Coach later and coach telling Matt not to worry about it.
This scene was powerful
The way coach grabs Matt 😂
Yeah this is up there with I think Michael B. Jordan scene from season 4 or 5 where he gets robbed or pressured to do some shady stuff and basically just starts swinging his fists at the air in frustration. Both that and this scene hit hard.
My favorite scene this whole season
Been waiting on this one
Bring tears to my eyes.
Finally!! I've waiting for my them to drop this scene for a while. Also the scene where he benches Matt for JD McCoy the anger in his eyes is great acting.
That was season three, but I agree I want it to drop too
Is this season 3?
@@adambyers2212 this is season 2. It got cut short due to the writers strike so a lot of story arch’s were left hanging
Still one of the best shows of all time
A scene like this is why FNL is the best television I ever watched.
This’ll make a grown man cry
Definitely one of my favorite scenes of the whole show. My high school never had a coach like this. In fact, throughout my 4 years of high school, we had 3 different head coaches. And just when we thought we genuinely found an honorable one, they would always turn their heads to the scoreboard. Granted I know winning is important, especially to the coaches career, but the students and players are equally as, if not, more important. I would’ve given anything to have a coach like this. Our coaches half the time didn’t even remember our names. The only names they remembered was the ones that had what seemed to be a natural ability to score touchdowns. They didn’t have eyes at all for underdogs. No mindset for mentorship. No hearts for sympathy for individual players needs. Nothing. Just eyes on the prize and publicity. And ironically enough, we never saw a championship. In fact, we barely made it to the playoffs and the team we faced first round scored like 5 touchdowns in the first half. To our zero touchdowns. They ran past us like we were standing still. And then even better, none of the coaches we had even coach anymore. They’re into real estate and sales and what not.
How can you watch this clip and not need to watch the whole series?
Coach : matt you forgot your mum left as well...
The fact that Zach Gilford never got any awards or even nominated for his acting in this show is a fucking travesty.
this was one of the few times I disagreed with coach. Take matt on a walk and talk things out. Don't throw him in a shower because he's felt like that his whole life!

I never understood why Matt abd Julie broke up between end of season 1 and beginning of season 2. They were on such a good place it seemed. I’m guessing it had to do with Coach leaving?
In 5 seasons of FNL, this may be the only scene where Coach Taylor genuinely had no idea how to respond.
Also when Coach McGregor comes to his house and calls him out for his role in getting fired

Every able bodied kid should be required to participate in school sports. Even if they end up 4th string.
I don't mind being in the minority, season 2 didn't bother me like it did everyone else, but I guess that's maybe because I watched the show on netflix and didn't watch it live year-to-year, for me, season 4 was weakest, but I still liked it because all 5 were awesome *shrugs*
God i miss this show
I’m not sure why everybody hates Season 2. It’s one of my favorites with a lot of my favorite scenes as well.
I think they would've made season 2 redeemable had the writers strike not happened, because there were so many gems (including this scene). However, that murder plot was all trash.
Matts def the best character and in my eyes the main character besides coach. Its kind of like varsity blues where james vander beek was the main character and backup qb the best qb in the country and be became a star himself, and ended up being central to the story after that. Same with matt. He became qb and dated the other main characters daughter. He was a great guy with a great heart. He was like your every man character and so many people can relate to him.

I agree but this wasn't his best scene. I get what he was going for but calling Matt selfish and telling him everyone is relying on him, as if he doesn't know that, is not the right direction to go. The kid felt like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and no support system to help him carry it. Of course he is going to stumble.
