    Everything about this video is first class: the orchestra, chorus, soloists, but also the audio and video (camera work). Congratulations to all taking part!

    A wonderful performance of one of the greatest English choral pieces. Bravo to the soloists, the choir, the orchestra and Brabbins who shapes it with such loving care.

    This is wonderful music of its time. I'm ashamed that I do not know more of Howells's music - I intend to change this immediately and have already found his Cello Concerto on RUclips

    This is a posting that really could do with subtitles even in English -
    especially if the intent is to bring new listeners to Howells' work. I
    know that will sound Philistine to some but I am afraid it is a modern
    reality - especially with a work this involved.

      The solo soprano was probably why the no. of views is so low. Everyone else was fantastic.

    • @operarararaaaa
      @operarararaaaa 4 года назад

      thornsaresharp Realistically and fairly the reason for the “low number of views” is because this piece isn’t better known. I was at the concert and the soprano soloist, Sarah-Jane Brandon, was sublime!

    • @thornsaresharp
      @thornsaresharp 4 года назад +1

      @@operarararaaaa | am happy for you. For me, unfortunately, her exaggerated vibrato sounded like a neighing horse.

    • @operarararaaaa
      @operarararaaaa 4 года назад

      thornsaresharp And what a beautiful neigh! We are all entitled to our own opinions, unfortunately.

    • @danmoran454
      @danmoran454 4 года назад

      @@thornsaresharp : I'm glad you wrote that. I'll bypass her when I get there in this performance. This piece is *not* opera (fortunately) so noticeable vibrato is unnecessary. This is a symphonic choral work. Too often exaggerated vibrato is used to cover up technical problems as well as pitch problems. I have really enjoyed the Symphony Chorus and Orchestra so far. But "neighing horse," I like that description. That describes most vocal soloists with their wobbling vibrato, from my experience. Thanks for that.

    im not very well versed in classical music, but this is the type of stuff im looking for. any suggestions for similar types of music?

    • @paullewis2413
      @paullewis2413 5 лет назад +4

      You might try Faure`s Requiem, it has many beautiful parts and is not difficult for ``beginners`` in classical music. For something more dramatic and large scale you could also try Vaughan Williams` 1st symphony `A Sea Symphony` scored for baritone, soprano chorus and orchestra - a great work for sure.

    • @Cinemadamenic
      @Cinemadamenic 5 лет назад +4

      I would second Paul Lewis's suggestions, and add Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, which, like 'Hymnus Paradisi', brims with monumental tenderness and radiance.

    • @brendanroth1357
      @brendanroth1357 5 лет назад +1

      The Durufle Requiem for sure. Listen to the Howells Requiem as well, which is a lot of the same music as the Hymus Paradisi but a different (and in my opinion more suitable) feeling. And listen to Howell's large body of Anglican liturgical music especially his many settings of the evening canticles. Also stated below Vaughan Williams's Sea symphony. Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music is also very hip.
