- Part etude breakdown, part TED talk, today's Guitar Alchemy lesson focuses on accessing speed on guitar, avoiding repetition overload, and ditching any wasted guitar practice approaches when it comes to achieving speed. There are lots of ways to practice - and I enjoy checking them all out - but I do think when it comes to technique mastery, many of us get stuck in slow rep mode without making the "trial by fire" a regular part of the process.

Thanks for this excellent video Chris. As far as I’m concerned, the more talking the better, so don’t apologize for that. Diving deep on how to get a reliable fast tremolo on a single string, and overcoming common obstacles to that, could be an entire video I feel.

I've played around 20 years and I have always wanted to play Dream Theater solos as John Petrucci is a big influence to me . I also love Syu from Galneryus who plays neoclassical metal and they play songs around 170 beats per minute 😅 I can play them at half speed but I cannot achieve full speed at the moment

What worked for me building speed was to just go for it, slop and all, then work on what was causing the slop....pick geometry and such. You don't become a better sprinter by jogging. Also I've pretty much ditched the metronome and just tap the foot instead, I feel more connected to the pulse with my body than listening to a click. Everyone is different, just have to try everything and see what works for you.

Thanks Chris, Your pick or plektrum how many millimeter thick is it? My is 1,5 mm Dunlop ,Im playing very fast with my nail, but the pick i stuck, and slow, perhaps i must play more practice..
In this video I'm using the YJM 1.5 Dunlop, link in description. Many years ago I built my chops on the 1.5 and mostly 2.0 Delrin 500 so I switched back recently for nostalgia and testing purposes. I grabbed an Yngwie version cause I thought white would be useful for the video.

Chris, I'm not more concerned about speed, but about how not to be stupid and not to make 1000 takes after the record button is pressed 😂😂
Oh, I deffo can't help you there. I do 100 takes and then decide the second one was the best, but I keep going cause I feel like I have to earn it haha. Seriously though, looped recording does help me just bash out a dozen takes in a row without stopping and starting, and I'll either decide it's in there, or compile two takes that were close to right.

You'll always want multiple takes, just for different reasons. At this stage, I'm trying to capture what it sounds like most of the time. Thanks!
