The country is all set to get its first-ever underwater metro service in Kolkata, with PM Narendra Modi inaugurating the underwater metro on 6th March, bringing in a new era of urban transportation. The remarkable 16.6 km metro tunnel beneath the Hooghly River, is indeed an engineering excellence and will serve the process of crossing the major river seamlessly. The underwater metro project is not merely a means of transport, but also a solution to longstanding issues of traffic congestion and air pollution in Kolkata, thereby promising a more sustainable and efficient urban environment. Connecting the twin cities of Howrah & Kolkata, the underwater metro features six stations, three of which are situated underground.
