A Year Living In An Abandoned Ghost Town

- Thank you all for one of the best years of my life! One year in an abandoned mining town. I could have never imagined 12 months ago what the town had in store. Now I sit here a year later and am filled with gratitude. This year has taught me a lot and brought all sorts of amazing people into my life, because of this channel. So thank you!
For more photos around the town, check out my Instagram: / brentwunderwood
Cerro Gordo T-Shirts and more: store.cerrogor...
Once upon a time, Cerro Gordo was the largest producer of silver for the state of California. Miners pulled over $500 million worth of minerals out of this mountain. Close to 4,000 people called it home in the late 1800s. By the 1940s the town was out of minerals, out of water, and mostly abandoned.
I moved up here March 2020 to try to bring life back to this forgotten town. It's been a year of ups and downs. A year of learning self-reliance, new skills, and much more.
Thank you all for following along and make sure to SUBSCRIBE because I'm headed into Year 2 up here! A lot more adventures in store!

I can't believe that it has been one year since you started YT and lived in Cerro Gordo.. Congratulations Brent! ❤️❤️❤️

I have told eveyone I know about you and your incredible journey too. I'm also fortunate enough to live in socal, close enough to drive there some day. So, i expect to check it out in the flesh! Thank you for taking us on your trip with you.
i only watched your first video 2 weeks ago off you first appearing in that snow storm, now its snowing again xD Well done on your work to the place!! your passion for the town is admirable. calii from the UK :]
Dear Brent, I can offer my 25 years experience as a carpenter, my tools and some equipment, in exchange for small lot near the main road where I can build a period correct 24 ft x 24 ft cabin to enjoy my retirement . I would return the land and cabin at the time of my death. At one time I considered homesteading in Alaska, but the conditions are just too harsh.
High Desert, Jungle, and Artic survival training may also be handy. Financially secure. Just me, my guitar, and my dog.
Just turned 64 , take no meds and have no issues. I am in top physical condition. I require eyeglasses, that's it .
What needs tending to ?
Thanks, Kevin

In my humble opinion this is one of the finest, best narrated, best produced, most informative, and most enjoyable RUclips channels that also has superior video quality.
He needs to spice up the content though, he’s getting to the point of repeating the same stuff over and over. We don’t need a 13 months at.....14 months at.....15 months at....
@@MichaelRichards983 tbh I love the updates. I'm not subscribed so seeing these little follow up videos really makes my day

As a “born and raised” high mountain desert girl myself. I’m in Love with the “rough country”. It feeds my soul! The sunsets are so incredible. In the right spot you can see the entire sky full of incredible color! It will always be my “Shire” 🥰
Can't imagine life without this channel now. It's fun, full of history and never know what your gonna get next well worth tuning into every week.
To be honest, it helped me go through a lot, and entice me to a be... maybe a better me !
excited for your album with Armand Hammer
I’ve enjoyed it too but the content needs to be fresh; he shows so much of the same thing over and over and over. It’s getting a little boring.
@@MichaelRichards983 I think if you committed to film and release a video every single week you'd soon realise the struggle of how much of a chore it is. The times you forgot your camera or the pain in the arse the camera is when you juat need to get on sometimes. I think perhaps he fills a bit of time using past footage instead of giving us a cut short show each week.
@@thealchemist638 Filling to fill isn’t a good practice mate.
That town couldn’t have a better owner. You really appreciate it for what it was and what it will one day be.
He seems like a good guy but he clearly accidently burned down the towns main building..
@@jk2219 It wasn’t in his fault AT ALL, he couldn’t prevent it from happening an fire do too electricity wasn’t his fault, and yes he has done better than all the past owners 1.by collecting the artifacts he finds. 2. By documenting his journey for soon to be the town owner whenever, so people can see his great work, if people want to put him down for that it’s not his fault.
@@jk2219 i hate reading trough his comments, how people blame him for "burning down the hotel" im like wtf, do people really understand how electrical systems works? how it ages, rats or bugs could have been attacking one outlet is enaugh. electrical system isnt dangerous if it stays without load. when you connect an heater to it the fun begins. and this is also how 120v is twice more dangerous than 220v
@@E.Everett I never blamed him I said he accidentally done it, he most likely doesn't have the proper qualifications to know how electricity works and wasn't careful enough, especially in an easily flammable building like that.

This whole channel really explores the concept of "one man's trash is another man's treasure" and I love that.
This has been one of the most inspiring videos I’ve seen on RUclips. I just added visiting your town to my bucket list!
THAT PART EXACTLY
I would too but at age 70,doubtful it will ever happen ..
My wife and I have a 5 year plan to move to California so we can volunteer up there on the weekends or any days off we have and help rebuild. I am in love with this town!
This entire channel feels like the plot of a video game, you've taken on an abandoned town as a project and over the time that you discover new things, get resources, discover history and restore buildings slowly people would enter the town and you'd continue to build onto the town and discovering it's lost history to make it whole again.
I'd give it a shot
that sounds kind of like darkest dungeon,
minus you know, the lovecraftian shit
Sounds like a joint venture to me
Lol 😆 he's playing Sim City
Yeah it's Firewatch in 4k
What I like about this channel is that you don't want to be famous or rich or the best youtuber. Your goals aren't getting the most subscribers and the most views. Your goals are rebuilding the town and exploring and in the process taking us along with the ride. That makes this feel really real and genuine. I wish you all the best for the second year.
I couldn't agree more you summed it up very well

Johnny is such a hero to the story of Cerro Gordo. His picture should be put up somewhere in the town so future generations can remember the man who helped you take care and explore the town.
I grew up in what was a gold mining town in the 1800’s. All around the town were massive piles of tailings. In the 1970’s the town council started selling tailings as fill. As they started carting the tailings away, the skeletons started to be uncovered. Some had met violent deaths (murdered and their bodies hidden in the tailings), others were thought to be from people tunneling looking for gold in the tailings who had been buried alive in collapses. Cerro Gordo may have more surprises yet.
You know he always talks about the 30 miners dead at the 200 level. Thats 30 skeletons for you if he ever finds them
Whoa. That is freaky. I hope to not experience that here.

Chills. You're so right my dear. I often find some people that repeat the history that they had once had before. Sadly many people do not realize that they carry The echoes of their past with them. It's truly brilliant to watch him open up and become a historian. The draw that he has to this land he may never know the life he lived beforehand. But I can guarantee, this man was once a minor in his past. And he's a nursing his own history. Unbeknownst to him. And with what you said, we need each other in this world. Especially now more than ever.
this is honestly one of the best videos I've seen in a long time
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that.
Imagine every restoration channel moving into the town.
Who knows what would happen.
Even for just a week or two, having a team that specializes in restorations would do wonders to that place.
There are many people like myself, who cannot find reputable people to repair their old homes and mobile homes.Impossible to find anyone willing to help. I have enjoyed finding old relics in the property. I find no resorces for folks (esp. the Elderly) to help them get barebones help making their homes barely liveable. For the longest time, I had no front door. Scary.
I think maybe newer codes, etc. Keeps us from saving original structures. I enjoyed this show very much. It gives me hope living in an old unliveable mobile home with no water, power, transportation,...even the belly insulation is totally gone. The Gov't told me to live there in a tent.Though I am disabled, they don't seem to have a plan what to do next.(Yeah, in 2 feet of snow ?). Alot of folks in my predicament, I guess ? My batt. running low oops...I love all this history. Thanks. God Bless

Would you be dead if you were “scared to death”? Stop lying
Brent should write a novel about the history about Cerro Gordo. This would influence others and learn from his discovery.
Who says he isn't? 😉
I'm passing right by tomorrow, I'll look up and smile. Really proud of you.
Thank you so much for taking us along on your adventure. You are a beautiful soul. ❤️
"Cheese cellar, wine rack, Bobcat den...all sorts of fun things."
Brent sense of humor is great lol 31:14
I think a neat spisode would be ging into the mines with a black light, to see if you have any rocks or minerals that would glow. I would be willing to send you one of my black light I use. Hello from the Cline family. Newman, Ca.
Gary cline the man
Great idea! Quite a few minerals glow under black light so that would be really neat to see!!
I just opened the video and I can't put into words the happiness I feel seeing it's an hour long. Can't wait to jump in Cerro Gordo for an hour! This is the best channel on RUclips. period
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
I just found this channel, it's the BEST mine/mining channel EVER, and that's saying a lot. 16 years of running around YT. It's going to take a LONG TIME to get through beginning to end, WAY WORTH THE TIME.
Thank you for all of this BRETT !!!
Once you start taking on visitors I think you should employ actors to reenact how it used to be. To give the visitors a more realistic view as if they are actually there! Love what you’re doing!
Good knowing you didn’t get stuck in some mine while looking for jeans!
I agree! A successful week is one in which he posts! If he posts, he got back!
this channel has been a real cosy family connector, when this comes out we gather around and dream while watching! Wish you many good things and good luck on year 2 and cant wait to watch and support where i can! so thank you alot
That is so cool to hear! Thank you for doing that.
Thank you, and congratulations on making it 1 year. Awesome job.
I didn’t start watching until last month and had no idea that there was a hotel, yeh it sucks u lost part of the history but I guess it’s ur time to leave ur mark on the town. You spend so much time and effort to make sure that the history is preserved and the story’s are told, The new hotel will be your story and your history. What you’re doing is beautiful.
Brent, I'm so happy for you that you've found your purpose in Cerro Gordo. So many people never find theirs. You are a lucky man. Looking forward to year #2 and beyond.
It is very rare that an entire litter of hand fed cats survive. Brent is a hero!
Not rare at all. Most ferrral cats abandon their kittens
@@evolvedou812 it really is. They dont abandon them at kitten age.

@@bennierusschen4446 it really isn't I have raised 5 liters of abandon kittens.
@@evolvedou812 there are several immumities that kittens only get from mother milk. They get that trough normal means in later life but they are likely to get deadly diseases till then. About 50% wont make it. Trust me. I went to vet school.
@@bennierusschen4446 did you actually read what I said over the past 15 yrs I have personally bottle feed 16 kittens 5 different liters none could open their eyes all were abandon. So I don't know what the hell you keep muttering. I'll rephrase that all were orphans. And none died.
I wish I could be a part of something like this. I am 82 years old and years ago I entertained as an old Hillbilly and town drunk. I also did story telling. I would love dying in a place like this and donating all of my old antiques to a preservation of history. Everyone wants everything for free. I would rather see it go back to helping preserve history. I offered my things to Whiskey Town, Ca. and they did not want it because it was not from the area they said. So be it, I will keep it and have my will junk it all.
Sell your antiques and donate the $$ to Brent.
