Niger June 2019 - French GCP Parachute Commando hunting Islamic State Jihadists

- A too short but very interesting video by Paris Match magazine about the action of the GCP in Niger against the “Islamic State in the Greater Sahara” group.
These GCP notably belong to the 3rd RPIMa (Parachute Marine Infantry).
From June 7 to June 19, 2019, French troops of Opération Barkhane led the operation “Aconit” at the Mali-Niger border. They were alongside Malian and Niger troops and were supported by US (unspecified, most likely intelligence) and British (logistical) forces. According to the French Ministry of the Armies, this operation was launched at the request of Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou after the ambush of Baley Beri which had claimed the lives of 27 Niger soldiers on May 14, 2019.
If the operation did not bring specific results in Niger (shown in this video), the outcome in Mali was more significant : around 20 jihadists were killed, five more were captured. Weapons, ammunitions, motorbikes, communication devices were also seized.
3 French soldiers were wounded. A Gazelle helicopter was destroyed after being seriously damaged during combats.
Opération Barkhane is a French-led operation taking place in Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad. These countries have gathered in the G5 Sahel to coordinate their efforts against terrorist groups. Opération Barkhane was launched on August 1, 2014 and has been tasked with fighting islamist insurgency in Sahel region, after the victorious Frennch-Malian offensive to recapture Northern Mali from these groups.
This video is dedicated to the 31 French soldiers who died in Sahel since 2013. It is also dedicated to all those who were physically or psychologically wounded, to their comrades and to their families and relatives. It is also a tribute to US, British and Estonian troops who have been with us, also to the soldiers of the G5 Sahel and the MINUSMA who have lost a lot of troops recently in the fight against islamist insurgency.

This form of COIN ( counter insurgency) operations is very similar to the way in which the South African/ South West African Koevoet battalion operated in northern Namibia during the Bush war in the 80's. Small groups of highly mobile black and white troops, supported by helicopters, following tracks to chase down and eliminate terrorists.

@kloic 1 N'oublions pas que les Français Libres ont fait partie des SAS dès le début de l'aventure. David Stirling en personne a qualifié Georges Bergé de co-fondateur des SAS. Après, l'emploi des véhicules légers dans le désert a trouvé de sacrées lettres de noblesse chez les Français Libres (je vous renvoie au documentaire que j'ai traduit sur la bataille de Bir Hakeim) qui l'associaient volontiers à la guerre de course des corsaires français du XVIIème et XVIIIème siècles. Je ne peux pas dire qui a utilisé un pickup la première fois mais en tous cas, les Français se sont reconnus tout de suite dans cette manière de faire la guerre et ils l'ont tout de suite adoptée avec entrain. C'est comme ça que je comprends le commentaire de Cajun pour ma part.

In 1985, giving a speech at the opening of the Stirling Lines (SAS headquarters), Stirling referred to having always felt uneasy for being known as the founder of the regiment, which he felt had five co-founders. As well as Lewes and Mayne, he named Georges Bergé (sometimes spelled Berget), founder of the French SAS, and (post-war) Brian Franks and John Woodhouse.
Il y a l'interview de Lord George Jellicoe sur le site de l'INA qui raconte comment Sterling a insisté pour que Bergé et ses hommes le rejoignent dès le début de 1941 malgré l'hostilité politique entre le général de Gaulle et Winston Churchill mais il faut avoir un abonnement pour visionner toute l'interview :

Le 5th SAS a été créé en février 1943, un mois après la capture de David Stirling par les Allemands. Pour lui la guerre se termina à ce moment là, il sera libérée de sa prison en 1945 par les troupes alliées envahissant l'Allemagne (comme Bergé d'ailleurs). Le fait que Eddy Blondeel ne soit pas cité n'est pas lié à sa personne et ses mérites, c'est tout simplement que Stirling ne l'a pas côtoyé apparemment, du moins pendant la guerre (il faudrait vérifier dans une biographie de M. Blondeel, je ne suis pas certain). Il faut voir le récit de ses exploits et les médailles nombreuses pour comprendre aisément que Blondeel, Bergé, Stirling et les autres étaient des hommes d'un même caractère d'exception, des guerriers efficaces, courageux et tenaces. Vous devriez chercher des citations de David Stirling sur le contingent belge, il doit certainement y en avoir et sans parler de co-fondateur, elles sont certainement élogieuses à la hauteur des hauts faits de ces soldats belges.

Quand je regarde ces films, je ne peux pas m'empêcher de penser à Stirling, ses jeeps, les FFL, et "Un taxi pour Tobrouk "
Et oui parce que le terrain commande. On peut avoir les robots, les ordinateurs, les fusils ultra-modernes, tout ce qu'on veut, le terrain n'a pas changé, les questions d'hier sont les mêmes qu'aujourd'hui, les anciens étaient loin d'êtres bêtes et leurs solutions restent globalement les bonnes encore maintenant. Alors certes, on va un peu plus vite, il y a des hélicoptères, la chasse peut couvrir toute la zone sahélienne en trois heures depuis la base de Niamey au Niger mais l'essentiel reste le même, surtout sur le plancher des vaches (ou celui des chameaux pour rester dans le ton).

Un fantassin c'est ça, ce qu'il fait est peu important, mais sa présence est indispensable.

Wherever he is, the journalist has greater chance of survival among the French Airborne Commandos. Me too, I would not like to be left behind in that situation.

Les images sont intéressante, l'engagement du/des reporters ( et évidemment des opérateurs ), je déplore juste que une fois de plus, beaucoup de terme soit toujours aussi faux, comme c'est le cas dans la plupart de ces reportages, malgré cela, bonne vidéo.
