Fabulous! Saw these on "Sitting in Bars with Cake" in a bar scene and wanted to make something like them and here you are! And I'm all about 1920s. Thank you!
I usually put them together ahead of time and then transport the bouquet holders with the feathers separate from the vases. But if you're short on transportation space, you can actually put them together on site. Once you've done a few of them, they only take a couple of minutes to set up.
Help! I found these pampas grass at Michael’s for a Boho baby shower. The stems are too long … can I cut them and stick in the bouquet holder like the feathers? the flower part is thicker than feathers
Thank you so much for sharing. Your video is very informative. I have a question. Though you usually use a 20", what size/height would be best for a dinner table center piece if using ostrich feathers? I'm concerned about eye level/site line against the feathers. Thank you again.
Hi Tina...the 20" vases will work for dinner table centerpieces if you use the shorter (12" to 14") feathers. If you're using the longer feathers, I would go up to 24" (any more than that and they can be pretty unstable). When you're putting in the bottom row of feathers, you may want to position them so they are sticking out more than down to make sure they aren't blocking the view. If you want to see what that looks like, I have a few pictures on my site from a Halloween party: www.entertainingdiva.com/fallen-angels-and-devils-party/.
Q: Can you go even higher than 24 inches for the vases? I want super tall centerpieces for my wedding :) Update: I saw in another comment that they become too unstable higher than 24. Are there other types of vases I could get that are more stable at a larger height?
Hi Julia...I have not tried making them taller than 24 inches, so I don't have any recommendations. But if you can find something that is wider at the base, that would help to keep it from tipping over. You can always use larger round styrofoam balls (rather than the bouquet holders) to hold the feathers. If the ball won't stay straight, stick 3 or 4 wooden dowels at the bottom of it (inside the vase) to hold it in place. I hope that helps!
Hi Katie...if you open the description on the video, I have the links for everything under the MATERIALS section (or you can go to my blog (www.entertainingdiva.com/how-to-make-a-feather-centerpiece/) and find them under the "What You Need" section
Sorry, Michael...I missed your comment earlier. If you still need them, there are links to buy the feathers in the video description (under MATERIALS) or you can find them on my blog page: www.fromhousetohome.com/entertainingdiva/how-to-make-a-feather-centerpiece/.
As a general rule, I would charge what it costs me to make them (including my time) as the rental fee. That way you make your money back on the first one and I might give a 10% to 20% discount on subsequent rentals depending on how big the party is. It usually comes out to about $100 per centerpiece.
How many feathers do you buy for the larger and smaller versions? You said you buy more for smaller feathers. I want to make an ostrich feather pendant/chandelier. Has anyone seen it done this way? I’m thinking cut a hole through the middle and attach an ordinary light fitting.
Hi...I don't sell the products, so I don't have pricing. But if you look in the description under the video, there are links to where you can see the prices of the feathers, vases, etc. on Amazon.
Thanks, Patricia!. I buy my feathers from Amazon. I haven't looked recently, but did some searching in the past and wasn't able to find anything that was cheaper. The links to the ones I get are in the description under the video.
It depends on the size of the feathers. For the longer 22" to 24" feathers, I use about 27. For the shorter 12" to 14" feather, I use about 30. You can get away with fewer than that if you don't mind a less full look. And some people want a few more than that if they want it to be really full.
Hi Latosha...It depends on the length of the feathers you have. I use 27 feathers for the long 21" to 24" ostrich plumes or 30 feathers for the shorter 14" to 18" ostrich plumes. But you could do a few more or a few less than that depending on how full you want it to look.
@@latoshadollard6560 I haven't tried making them that size so I can't say for sure. I would guess 24 feathers might be enough? But you probably need to try one and see how it looks.
@@latoshadollard6560 For the 10-12 inch, I usually do 30 feathers. That's assuming the same type of bouquet holder will fit in the vase. If the vase is too small, you may have to cut some floral foam to fit...in which case you probably won't need as many feathers. That's where you would need to try it out to see what looks good.
About 30 if you're using the shorter 14" to 18" feathers. About 27 if you're doing the longer 20" to 24" feathers. But you can use a few more or less depending on how full you want it to look.
I actually looked into this before I started using ostrich feathers. It's kind of like shearing sheep. The ostriches are raised on "feather farms". When the feathers are the right size, they are cut off the birds and then they grow new ones. The birds aren't killed, and the feathers aren't pulled out so it's not painful in any way.
Thank you so very much. Clearly explained w/ the visual. The 2 camera views were priceless ( being able to see the varying angles were so helpful)
Thanks, Bertha! I'm glad having the second camera angle was useful (I wasn't sure when I was making the video if it would be)
Since I'm extra and love Art Deco instead I am making these to flank my bed! Thank you for the wonderful tutorial.
As an extra Art Deco person myself, I think that's awesome!
Lol me too I'm making these for my bedroom.

I'm glad you found it helpful, Georgianna! It definitely is cheaper making them yourself.
This is amazing! Thank you so much. I am going to make some of these for my wedding and use the lights as well
Thanks, Dayna! Congratulations on your wedding!

How long does the light base stay lit battery operated? Do they last for at least 4 hours? The duration of a wedding reception
How many total feathers did you use for the largest white feathers?
Love this....Excellent idea
Usually 24 to 27 depending on how full you want the vases to be.
How many pieces total would you say I’ll need to make it that full? I may have missed it if you said how many you used?
For the longer 24" feathers, I use 25 to 27 per centerpiece. For the shorter 16" to 18" feathers, I use about 30 per centerpiece.
Beautiful
Thank you!
Do use fresh or artifical flower bouquet holders?
I use artificial ones because they are usually cheaper. But I think either would work.
Your tutorial worked perfect! But, how do you transport them? Please help!
I usually put them together ahead of time and then transport the bouquet holders with the feathers separate from the vases. But if you're short on transportation space, you can actually put them together on site. Once you've done a few of them, they only take a couple of minutes to set up.
I bought some feather white lamps, but one is a bit yellowish color, how can I get the feathers looking back to white again without ruining them?
