    This is a non-food comment to you both. My father was American military and my sister and I traveled the world with him and Mum. The one thing I found, even as a child is that: A smile is universal. I would have never had children to play with if I hadn't smiled and offered one of my dollys to play with. Neither knew the other's language, however we found a way to communicate through a smile.

    Europeans always complain about our taxes not being included in the sticker price, but the average European vat rate is about 22% while our sales tax average is only 6%. If doing a little simple math is the only negative, and I’m paying over a third less in taxes, I’m not complaining 😁

    • @LightMovies
      @LightMovies 19 дней назад +1

      True, but 80% of the taxes payed return back as services, not to finance wars or space programs. I lived in US and you pay much more to live there, than in Europe, because taxes cover just the administration costs, not all the services. I mean... in Europe I pay 100$ for a x-ray in a private hospital, and 20$ in a public one. Ambulance is free, I have have 30 days off paid per year in my job and a Woman 9 month paid if pregnant. I pay 300$ a year to insurance my car. What you don't pay in taxes in US you pay to have services and it could be 10 times more than in other countries. At the end of the year living in US is much more expensive.
      Anyway, the problem is not paying the taxes, but the fact you read a price and then paying another when check, and it's nonsense to me.

      @@LightMovies You are correct. They just rely on our taxpayer funded military and weaponry to protect them, and borrow our satellites instead of developing their own space program. So, maybe they should be thanking Americans for their free healthcare, and public transportation systems 🙏

    • @crazymom8316

      If you resent our military expenditures so much, maybe you ought to consider providing for your own protection. Much of our recent military actions had nothing to do with protecting ourselves, but other countries closer to the action (with the obvious exception of Afghanistan and maybe Iraq?????). We would be more than happy to leave Europe to deal with Russia on your own since you are so superior to us in every way after all.

    • @LightMovies
      @LightMovies 18 дней назад

      @@crazymom8316 Are you sure you're protecting other countries?
      In Europe there aren't many citizens living in the streets, the most people you see in the streets are refugees from north Africa, escaping the wars Bush started in 2001, after 9/11. US did their job (or better: the fu** they wanted), never found what they were searching (mass destruction weapons) and left the area in total crysis. Who cares? That will be their problem, and Europe too, which will be flooded of refugees. Not to mention the arab countries without any control reorganized in ISIS. Again: who cares? You're to the other side of the ocean and will never feel the problem. And it's the same with Russia, which have the tension with USA since the eighties (the cold war), and Europe is always in the middle. In a country where you can die if you don't have the money to cure yourself, and you cannot have a baby if you don't pay thousands of dollars, and where you can be fired just because the boss doesn't like you, why should I espect any sincere care? What I've learnt living in US is americans are not so much aware about what really happens in the rest of the world, and why.
      Anyway, I don't want to sell the Eurpean system as the best, because every country has its flaws, but It's just a matter of personal preferences. Do you prefer spending less in taxes, and total waste that money, and totally charge the services on your wallet? That's ok, but the point is you cannot compare two different systems. If in Europe you would spend 20% of taxes just to maintain the administration that would be the same and then you could compare and saying that 20% is insanely higher (that needs an explenation anyway. It's 22% just on non-primary items. On food, and primary items is 4%).
      We also have space programs, but we've never lost a spaceship, and the reason is we don't do that just to tell the world "look, we can", but we do them when needed and after be sure everything will be fine, even if that would be take years. Imagine the amount of money you could save, and put it in something more useful, from futile space launches leading to some destroyed spaceships even before takeoff.

    The reason taxes are not included in the shelf price is that it would be too difficult to mark each product because taxes vary widely not only from state to state but also between counties and cities. Add on the fact some things are taxed while others are not & it would be a pricing nightmare so the tax is added on at the till. With regards to Walmart, if I understood you correctly, you're thinking they are government controlled? They're not, although it is a corporation the major stock holders are the Walton family so they basically own all the Walmart stores.

    Many Americans think some of those things strange too. The reason things are so big in the USA is because they can be. Considering that all of Britain could fit into one of our smaller states, it just boils down to the fact we have both the money and the space to have big things, so why not?

    Dinner portions can be large, but it also is not unusual for two people with smaller appetites to spilt one entree (main course). I usually take home half my food for breakfast or lunch the next day-or even as a bedtime snack if we are eating early. Families with kids ofter have dinner between 5 & 6 pm. Elderly folks may eat even earlier!
    Also, restaurants often have a less expensive menu at lunch time, and the portions are smaller. Dinner (in the evening) is traditionally our big meal.

    The gun problem in the US isn’t that people use them while under the influence; it’s that they’re so widely available. The gun lobby is so powerful that even reasonable legislation limiting access has no chance of being passed. Taxes are all over the place because each state has its own tax laws, from food to income, and vary wildly from state to state.

      I appreciate your honest reflection on this topic. It’s a nuanced issue, and your perspective on needing guns in risky situations is thought-provoking. From my standpoint as a Havsuw’ Baaja, or “the people of the blue and green waters,” I believe in the importance of having access to guns and the right to use alcohol and substances recreationally. However, it’s crucial that we also have increased access to healthcare, especially mental health counseling and addiction treatment. Balancing personal freedoms with the necessary support services is key to addressing the challenges that come with these freedoms. Your empathy and appreciation for everyday comforts also highlight the diverse experiences people have and the importance of understanding each other’s perspectives.

    To clear some things up about taxes. It varies state to state even county to county within a state, some states have 0% tax on groceries, while others if you go out to eat can charge up to 10% (luxury tax) so the meal you would maybe pay $32 for after tax is running around $35. Same thing in grocery stores that range from 0-8% the bag of chips/crisps that is listed at $2.99 at the register will cost $2.99-3.17 all based off local laws and regulations.

    Needing ID to buy alcohol, tobacco and some medicine, . . .
    This is less about being the legal drinking age and more about tracking the sale of over the,counter medications used to make Meth.
    The Alcohol and Tobacco sales were included later.
    The cashier has NO CHOICE. They need to input your ID to complete the sale.
    If you are 22, or 92 . . . the machine needs a number, . . . a valid number.
    And why everyone in the group gets ID'd, . . . if you have to ask, . . . you do not want to know.

    In the US, food that is consumed off the premises is usually not taxable. For example, if you buy food from a drive-thru, it is not taxed. However, if you eat the food inside the restaurant, it is taxable. Soft drinks are not considered food and are therefore taxable, regardless of where they are purchased.
    Many states have exemptions for certain types of goods, including food. For example, in Ohio, food that is not consumed on the premises is exempt from sales tax. In California, cold food is not taxable if taken to go, but hot food is always taxable

    You have to go through classes and learn gun safety and have a background check done before you get the gun. Then you have to go through learning to shoot it and handling it safely. My father grew up hunting and was in the National Guards so he was familiar with it. A lot of families hunt for food before they spend money at the store. I've had some wild game meat it's delicious.

    In the US taxes get added on top of the prices later, unlike in Europe. So the price that you see in the store is actually not what you pay for a product at the counter. And yeah, on my recent trip to the US they also asked me for ID when entering a bar, even though it was daytime and I just wanted to eat something there. I'm 46 years old.

      The reason we do it in the U.S. is to discourage underage drinking & smoking. If the stores or bars don't ID they will be fined and can lose their license to sell those products. In some cases, with enough violations, the establishment can actually be forced to close down. The consequences of not carding can be costly so stores/bars just card everyone. It's easier on them that way.

    About the taxes, here in Italy, until a year ago, merchants would add the cost they pay to the bank when you wanted to pay with a card, especially if the amount was small. For example: 'I’d like to pay 1 euro with a card,' but the transaction costs the store 2 euros in banking fees. Those 2 euros would be charged to you. Recently, however, this practice has been prohibited.
    There is also a public tax on every transaction, no matter on what (it's on the cigarettes as well as food). On food is much lower than on cigarettes or TVs, but it's there. The taxes are included in the prices and return back as services, not wasted in wars, nuclear rehersals or futile space programs (I'm not saying they're futile, but too many just to say "look, we can" could save money).
    As for smiling, in Europe it depends on the country, and even within the same country things can be very different. For example, in northern Italy people smile less, while in southern Italy much more.

    In my neck of the woods, we don't use just blocks. Our streets are set up like a sheet of grid paper. So if anyone is to find a location: they'll be told how many streets down from one place to another. I often ask in just a neighborhood "How many blocks over is this person's house?" versus a business where it goes "What street is this business on and how many do I need to go?".
