Thrawn is the only guy in Star Wars with the guts to actually troll Vader, and get away with it

Actually, much more than Thrawn, Thrawn and Vader's shared master, Emperor Palpatine, trolls Vader on a regular basis, whether openly or subtly. And there's nothing Vader can do about that. If Vader wanted to shut Thrawn down, he could. But the Emperor is a different story. The Emperor can do whatever the hell he wants, to Vader, to Thrawn, to anyone, and get away with it.

I'm not as familiar as you guys are with Star Wars, but man, I absolutely adore hearing these discussions!!

I think it's safe to always assume that the Emperor is just *_better_* at things than everyone else. In your conversation about how he was able to sense this disturbance from all the way across the galaxy while Vader had trouble finding it within just a few hundred miles, and to whether is was more of Palpatine simply being more powerful or more attuned than Vader, I think it's safe to assume both. On *_numerous_* occasions throughout canon material, Darth Sidious has proven himself vastly superior to Vader in just about every way, from fighting skill, to strength in the Force, to cunning and general intelligence.
Even when considering formidable villains such as Thrawn and Vader, even they generally pale in comparison to the Emperor. As Vader stated to Thrawn in this book, despite all the power of the Bendu that Thrawn facecd, even all of that power is *_nothing_* compared to the power of the Emperor, and Vader warned Thrawn that Thrawn absolutely did not want to invoke the anger of their master, Emperor Palpatine. Even in the first scene of this book, its very clear that Palpatine perceives so completely clearly everything that both Vader and Thrawn are feeling, while the two servants in turn struggle to read their master.
As to the famous line of how *_"The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am,"_* when Vader has killed many officers who failed him, the difference with Palpatine, at least in Legends, is that he won't just kill you outright like Vader, rather, Palpatine will torture you to death in one of the longest and worst ways possible, then use his powers to bring you back to life, then kill you again in a different worst way, repeating the process many times, as he did with Bevel Lemelisk.

In the Canon novel Tarkin the Emperor nodded approvingly when Tarkin informed Palpatine that Vader tortured the members of Teller's Rebel cell for weeks slowly and painfully.
It's clear that Vader did this because he assumed Palpatine would be upset if Teller's Rebel cell members were given a quick death.

Love ALL the Zahn Thrawn books & rewatching these reviews but I AM surprised they overlooked the Anakin/Thrawn name mispronunciation scene, which is funny AF. 😂

Did really like how the book describes how SENSE works and how force users are able to anticipate and block blaster bolts as well as other attacks. They see just a couple of seconds into the future in a sort of double vision thing. Kind of reminds me now Sanderson in his Mistborn books descibes how people burn Atrium.

Love your enthusiasm for these books. I must say I preferred the Ascendancy trilogy because I was totally unfamiliar with the Chiss, but I did love the Alliances trilogy too. He's my favourite SW character. I'm super excited for Ahsoka!

If you read the Chiss Ascendancy trilogy by Timothy Zahn it tells you about Thrawn’s pilot. 😉
Of all the Thrawn trilogies the Ascendancy is the best!

It's actually insane to me that there's an entire trilogy of star wars books that I read years before you guys

Star Wars FFG, the rpg that has been around for some years has cortosis in it. It basically shuts off your lightsaber, so not really a big deal, can just ignite it for free your next round... except you then don't have it to deflect blaster bolts coming at you until your turn starts. So actually a HUGE deal.

Filoni definitely took Thrawn a more straightforward, mustache-twirly, villain route for Rebels. It was an aggressive disconnect from the canon-book Thrawn I’d come to know. I still genuinely believe that Thrawn isn’t supposed to be the next big bad, but really the galaxy’s greatest hope for survival from the Grysks. Legends Thrawn was definitely more ruthless, but still would’ve been a necessary ally to save the galaxy from the YV, and his death lead to the deaths of trillions. I hope that Thrawn and Ezra connected in the unknown regions, and have come together to save the galaxy. I hope that Ezra has joined the Chiss, like Eli did. With Ahsoka releasing today, I’m almost deathly afraid of the potential loss of such a great and nuanced story for Star Wars to explore. Especially after the disappointment of the recent trilogy.

To be fair, especially after Palpatine's first death enabled him to utilise his powers more freely, he could easily wipe out threats like the Grysks if he wanted to. Thrawn even admits that the Grysks can't stand up to the Empire militarily, but are a threat because of how they might be able to take them apart from within (not that they'd succeed). But while Thrawn isn't nearly as evil as the Emperor, or even as Tarkin and Vader, Thrawn is still a villain and an evil one at that. Despite the cold-blooded murders Thrawn commits without care or remorse, even in these canon novels he openly states that he has no problem with the Empire using slaves, with Thrawn referring to said slaves not as people, but as Imperial assets that should be utilised as such.
Thrawn is good to Imperials, especially those under his command, but he is still an evil man who does terrible things to non-Imperials in the name of his Emperor and what he perceives to be the "greater good". Thrawn is a great character, no doubt about it, but his character is and always has been that of a villain.

The hype for *Ahsoka* building is the most obvious reason I can think of. The excitement for the book was much better when the book came out. If they recapitulate what they did before, there would likely be too much missed.
