Michelle Pfeiffer’s beauty and goodness were ethereal in this film. The way they treated her reminds me of the way the Windsor family treated Princess Diana, and how they also sealed her doom in the same way.
the late Princess Diana brought a good portion of that upon herself; especially in light of how she used the press to cast her as the innocent, doe-eyed, quasi-virgin sacrificed to the whims, wishes and wills of the Windsors; an image which never would allow then Prince Charles to have any redemption. Diana would always be the woman scorned and cast aside, never mind that she was actually the first one to have an affair and made NO attempt to do anything to ingratiate herself to Charles. What's worse, she used her children as a weapon against him and went so far as to try to force Charles out of his birthright (as king) in favor of William; ignoring that it was Charles who agreed and was more than accommodating to the terms of the Divorce, that she maintain her residence at Kensington Palace, to move her Office from St. James to Kensington Palace and to maintain this (meaning he would perpetually assume financial responsibility for-- meaning, he was paying for this quasi PR firm), provide for more than L15 Million settlement and allowed her joint custody of the children. What she could not have is her title or act in an any official capacity as a Royal She was now an ex-Royal and also what she could not do is blab to the press. While Diana NEVER kept that portion of the agreement, it was then that Prince Charles put his foot down that he would no longer tolerate this constant running tales to the press, and with the serious blunder made regarding her official announcement (which brought a curt but VERY rebuttal by the Queen herself), made it clear Diana no longer called the shots and the matter was settled. If then Prince Charles were as heartless and unfeeling and cruel as depicted by Princess Diana, he could have destroyed her as he truly was the Heir Apparent and Diana actually went against the terms that were approved by the Queen, but he did not do so because she was and would always be the mother of his children (although Harry's paternity was always in question, but was accepted by Prince Charles as his own.. he never questioned it). He could have hung her out to dry but didn't.. and ironically, neither did Camilla. She actually viewed Diana as needing help and felt sorry for her, even as Diana would harass her and call her residence constantly. Diana was NEVER a victim. She was immature, spoiled and only trained to "snag a Royal" but never trained in what to do when she got him. And even WHEN she got the "top job" she REFUSED any advice (including that of her own grandmother) to better herself intellectually. She didn't "get it' until AFTER her divorce. Tragically for her and for us, it was a little too late.

I generally prefer to watch movies in their original version but they made a fantastic dubbing work on this one. They tried to use the expressions and vocabulary that were en vogue among the french nobility during the XVIIIth century. "Tell her that her love was the only real happiness I've ever known" was probably not relayed by Danceny to Madame de Tourvel as she interrupted him to say "That's enough."
All things considered, in my opinion the movie Valmont was superior to Dangerous Liasons. Colin Firth was far and away better in the role of Valmont than John Malkovich. Glenn Close and Annette Bening were equally matched with different strengths and points of view and the same for Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Tilly. Both Fairuza Balk and Henry Thomas were better as the young lovers and more believable than Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves. All other roles were equally matched. Each script had some stronger writing and scenes than the other. All in all, mainly due to the male leads, I prefer Valmont.

Valmont (John Malkovich's character) kept all the letters that Glenn Close's character (Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil) sent to him and as he was dying he gave them to Keanu Reeve's character (Chevalier Danceny) to read. Valmont also told Danceny that he many decide to circulate the letters, which he clearly did. By the night of the opera everyone in high society in Paris knew of her cruel and vindictive machinations, hence, they turned on her and boo'd her at the opera.
Valmont saved all the letters between he and Isabelle which proved what they had both done. Valmont told Danceny to circulate the letters. He did so and Isabelle’s reputation was destroyed.
