They pass the queen phenomenon by touch. That's why a double screen board works to make splits. If they can't touch they can't pass the queen phenomenon
I feel your pain. Getting to the hives and having the time to thoroughly inspect them is a challenge but spring comes and goes quickly and soon enough we will be extracting honey.
@@BugFarmerBees I usually pull off the spring honey around end of May, then do another one in June, and one more time in July. Might get a little in August, then dearth till September then the goldenrod and asters bloom. I have limited equipment so pull off and put back on, but it allows me to take advantage of different nectar flows

The videos were all filmed within a weeks time. Just edited and released in sequence. RUclips time and real time aren't the same. I film every time I go to the bee yard but only release one video a week. I get backed up sometimes. :-)
Hey Brad. Great to hear from you. I hope all is going well and your NYC bees are out and flying. Crynock is the fellow who was with me in the video and the breeder of the bees. He seems to have created a hybrid of Beeweaver bees and Italians. The bees build up fast, keep large colonies, and bring in the goods. They can get a little spicy from time to time but nothing that can't be handled. I like them because the produce a ton of honey and are robust.
Man those top boxes with queen cells are the perfect split. Just pull the top box off and a bottom board and a top and you have a great new hive. Seems like a waste of resources.

I would recommend putting some of those capped queen cells into small two frame hives (split nucs) to have some backup queens in case of need. Too late now, but something to think about for a next time.
I will be doing splits directly after the harvest in June. My goal right now is to keep as many bees in each hive as I can. I need field bees to bring in the goods.
5 boxes of bees, what you doing putting ten supers on top? I would of split them all like Mr Ed does and you would not have to buy any but I can tell that is not what your mentor wants! $$
I am not sure I understand your comment. I am trying something new this year to control/prevent swarms and build big colonies. It may or may not work but I won't learn new techniques if I don't try new things. As far as a mentor, I don't really have one. I don't like to poison the well of ideas with what others think will or will not work.

That is really good information.
One of my hives swarmed yesterday, caught them. Still need to go through my hives just tough working multiple jobs.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice........
How much extra brood did you give them. Wouldn't have cells 3 weeks later unless you boosted them. Should take care of the funny honey problems

Hey Bug Farmer. Can you share some traits about this Crynock queen? Why are you trying them? I’m interested. And why are they called Crynock?

That is a worrysum nuc my friend
Good news is that video was filmed a several weeks ago and the bees are all rocking! #fullhives :-)

That is the plan for June. I will be splitting my hives just after the harvest. For now I want all of the bees in the box :-)
So... what is your occupation? You use your hands so much when talking and you don't look Italian to me.
A little of this and a little of that :-)
Hey bug farmer it looked as though there was at least one queen cell the frame going back in at about 15.07. Better find it before it emerges.
Too late, she emerged but the good thing is I used her in the enigma hive. We will see that next week. :-)
Nice video. What was the shim for between the deep and the medium??
The shim is an entrance for the upper boxes to allow the bees to come and go without going through the brood nest.
You need to have those guys with you every time you need to find the queen 👸 bee 🐝
I know right. Crynock has the eye.

Oh great. Thx a lot. I’ll have to look up Beeweaver.
Did you check the bottoms for queen cells?
I did. No cells :-)

@@BugFarmerBees I understand, but a bit of insurance can't harm.
Looking good there down south. Your timing was right on the way it looks to me.
Yea, I think so too. The hives are packed. That video was filmed about 3 weeks ago. Wait until you see them now :-)
Hey Bug Farmer, so the magnet is for fishing. What size is it?
75mm. a.co/d/75q4Zdl
@@BugFarmerBees Thank you!! Happy beekeeping
Are these last years Queens (overwintered)? Is that why you're marking red instead of green.
Yes. They are last years queens.
They pass the pheromone by mouth
I never knew that. I will look it up. Thank you.
Couldn't get email to you.@@BugFarmerBees
Junior is a doll! Love the father son time together.
It is always a good time when a father and son can share a day together.
I am so jealous you get to be in your bees! Thank you for sharing!
Don't be jealous. Your time is coming :-)
@@BugFarmerBees I am hoping to at least pop caps today and check their stores and maybe throw some pollen patties in there! Wish me luck!
Great video!
Thanks. Much appreciated.
