Someone _WAY_ smarter than me wrote the following about the Lions: "they could have got Branch at 12, Gibbs at 18, Campbell at 34, and LaPorta at 45 and most would have thought it was a great draft." Damn if that isn't a brilliant insight.
I have _no idea _*_HOW_* the later picks were still on the board but they MUST HAVE an insider with the Packers to get Branch when the Packers themselves have a great need at safety. Anyhow, when you pull back & look at the mostly insipid free agent signings before the draft that they made, they're (Holmes at least) starting to look like they're playing 4d chess. They didn't just need new blood at RB, their secondary is now second to that of what other team?
They can stop the pass in what is the most pass heavy era in the NFL & they've strengthened themselves almost everywhere. It's going to be interesting watching their two matches against the Bears this season as _their_ changes might be the Achilles Heel of the Lions.
They strengthened at the lines in the draft, but already got two top-tier LBs, 2 (more productive?) RBs & have a 3rd for depth while still having the best running threat of a QB (taking a _TON_ of pressure off of their o-line) & a #1 WR. So they're strong in ways the Lions _aren't_ built to beat.
After free agency, I felt that while I liked what the Lions had done, aside from one hire in their secondary, everything was mostly tweaks like switching RBs whereas the Bears revolutionized themselves on both sides of the ball.
But on the draft, Poles went _VERY_ conservative, not even risking getting Jalen Carter & went almost strictly for solid linesmen whereas the Lions chased after stars.
Still: we kind of know what Goff's ceiling is, but not Fields'. The stats say that Goff is best under play action & the coaches know how to work with what they have. But the Bears are simply Too Unknown to truly assess. I think they both make the playoffs.
But the division or head to head games? It'll be VERY interesting. The Lions are seeking to be Strong & Steady, the Bears, only so that they can open the field to be explosive. I think that the Lions will do better overall, but that the Bears might sweep them.

I've heard Gibbs was going to be picked right after the lions took him. A lot of teams were pissed the lions took him. If we didn't take him someone else would've taken him. He would've been available at 18. The LB Jack Campbell was the best linebacker in the draft. Maybe a little early, but once again by the time the lions would've had another pick he would've been gone. I give them a A B+ in this draft. Second day best day of team.

It's been fun to watch people react to this draft. It's funny how many people had their April Madness bracket busted on the first pick and every other pick, too. Holmes came out and said that they look at each potential pick as individual athletes. But every self-proclaimed expert looked at player stats and numbers which are related to the team they're on. As if we draft teams.

I was surprised we took him that early but good picks but they are claiming there was a lot more interest in these players by other teams then we thought so given that, maybe it made sense. I do think we got better by adding 2 more big weapons for Goff and this secondary is a strength when it was a weakness. I thought we would pick higher on both lines but I'm not complaining because they were not bad while our secondary was awful and we added to what we already did in FA. First four picks are starters or could be starters so while I wonder about some players they passed on, we upgraded in at least 2 or 3 positions. Loved the Hendon Hooker pick!!!! I know Goff is our starter, he's a good guy to develop as a backup and if he flourishes, maybe even as a replacement later but he has some growing to do. I give this draft a B+ but we'll have to wait and see if this is better then I'm projecting it.

No way Goff would be cut next year! Heck at a minimum he’d be traded for at least some decent capital. His deal is not that bad for a QB thst was top 7 in everything! At only 28 (then 29) he would still have good value as a starter somewhere! 🤷‍♂️👌

    • @choosecarefully408

Goff is seen as lower than he merits because he was traded for Stafford by someone seen (& rightly so) as an offensive guru. I _DO think_ that Goff has a bit of a low ceiling when it comes to clutch situations & he's slow & steady, not explosive.
Doesn't mean you can't design *around* this. That's what the Lions seem to be doing. Their secondary just shot up to being possibly top 5 & when your team can stop the pass, then a slow, steady offense can really wear down opponents.
The other team that has transformed The Most this off-season is the Bears. It kind of sucks that 2 of the best 3 GMs are in the same division. I only hope that the Bears' _coaches_ are working as hand in hand with their GMs as those of the Lions seem to be.

Thats why we drafted Gibbs he was Swift replacement, they knew swift was goin to traded I even seen reports of him being shopped b4 the draft, what ppl don’t realize is this offense needs a Gibbs/Swift type back as a playmaker out the backfield. Montgomery was Williams replacement & Gibbs was Swift replacement & they’re both more of a home run hitters than Williams & Swift. Ben Johnson said our running game left so many big plays on the field last season

The panic began when Seattle took the Lions original top pick in Witherspoon, then they panicked, traded down just to grab Gibbs instead of staying put to draft the better Bijan Robinson. Then they practically wasted the 34th pick they received for trading down by taking Campbell at 18th, then Laporta at 34th. By doing that, they screwed themselves out of the best TE in the draft in Dalton Kincaid. Campbell was at best a mid 2nd round talent, no other team in the draft even considered taking an ILB until the Broncos took Drew Sanders at 67.....The Lions could have grabbed Kincaid at 18 then easily taken Campbell at 34, which in my opinion would have still been a reach on Campbell, but at least they would have gotten the best TE in the draft......
