as you said yourself in this video when describing the first "cream" you called it a "creamy texture". and that's what it means, the texture, and not that it contains some dairy products. the same applies to all those "Creme"/"cremig", honey (in contrast to liquid), nuts (instead of still having crunchy bits), and jam (instead of having entire or partial fruits). maybe peanut butter could be called peanut creme instead, containing neither butter nor cream/Sahne. of course there are also creamy milk products which can/will have 'your' cream in them.
afaik, the dairy product that you call "cream" is called "Sahne" in german, and this word in germany is always related to the consistency only, even in "cooking creme" (some company's name for their semiliquid butter or margarine; i never tried that) and in "Buttercremetorte" :-)

When it comes to cold cuts you should keep in mind the different "sections" of a german Fleischtheke (lit.: meat bar)...
    A. Ham:
    - depending on the process:
"raw" (called Rohschinken in german): not actual "raw", but "not cooked"... raw ham is cured (salted) and/or smoked (Schwarzwälder, Katenschinken) or "dry aged" (luftgetrocknet) like italian Parma-ham or spanish Serrano-ham.
"cooked": pale, lighter color, can be as well smoked afterwards, seasoned inside (e.g. Rosmarin-Schinken / rosmary ham) or on the outside (e.g. Wacholder- Schinken / juniper ham). Farmer-Schinken, Krusten-Schinken, Gekochter Schinken, Vorderschinken are other types / names of cooked hams.
    - depending on the part where the meat comes from:
Mostly the hip/thigh part is used for ham. Within this "region" german butchers divide the outer - more meaty - part (called Oberschale) and the inner part (= Unterschale).Within the Oberschale there are again parts to define: Kernschinken (the inner inner part), Nussschinken (a small, very lean part). Schinkenspeck comes from the outer, more fatty parts.
Attention: "Speck" normally is the name of the pork belly (what you would call bacon). It is as well used as a kind of synonyme for more fatty parts... so the Schinkenspeck doesn't come from the belly, but from the hip as the most types of ham. Speck can be "raw", salted (gepökelt), smoked all these to be eaten in thicker slices or small cubes) or cooked as a cold cut
Other parts: Lachsschinken (Lachs = salmon) is a cured pork loin and very lean (also sometimes called "Lachs", e.g. Lammlachs = lamb loin), the slices are often perfectly round. Karree-Schinken is ham made from the rips.
    B. Roasts
Part of cold cuts can be a pre-braised roast, called "Braten" in german. Typical is Schweinebraten (sometimes "moo daeng" style with an orange crust coming from paprika powder), Krustenbraten or Roastbeef (yes medium-rare braised and cut in thin slices) to be eaten with remoulade sauce and in restaurants sometimes served with fried potatoes (Bratkartoffeln).
    C. Sausages
In german "Wurst" is a general term for treated meat. It can be "Wiener Style" (mostly called "Würstchen", Hotdog sausages you'll find in cans or glass jars, Wiener/Frankfurter are often called Siedewürstchen), "salami style" (e.g. Salami, Cervelatwurst (very fine cut and mixed), Sommer-Salami (less fat) Pfeffer-Salami), "Mortadella"/baloney-Style (e.g. Fleischwurst, Gelbwurst, Lyoner, Jagdwurst), like a spread (feine/grobe Leberwurst, Teewurst, Zwiebelwurst).
    D. Aspics
Very common in Germany are meat (and veggies) in aspic. The german word for these types of cold cuts is "Sülze". It comes from french cuisine (called Balantine) and was a traditional way to use every part of the animal ("nose to tail") AND to preserve ist for a longer time. Nowadays there are quite fancy creations combining meat and veggies. The classic way is kind of a "paté" or "terrine" with only meat cut in thick pieces, served cold with hot Bratkartoffeln and sauce tartare (Remoulade).

As far as wafers are concerned, there are two very popular products in Germany: Hanuta and Knoppers. You already tried a Hanuta product in this video, but it seems to be a bit different compared to the original. If you ever go back for a second taste test I would recommend including these two classic snacks.
Also Manner is worth a try, they're a type of wafer too. They're wrapped in light pink colored packaging with handlettered writing on them.

"Manner" is an austrian company, and i always watch to not eat the whole pack once i have opened it. classic standard are the small square foil packages, but you also can get packs/bags with much more contents. there also are several different flavours, but hazelnut is the classic (most well known) flavour.

Have you ever tried curd cheese? Quark?
It's something between yogurt and cheese.
On bread, lightly salted with parsley, herbs or radish.
On bread, with sweet jam or honey on top.
For dessert, mix the quark with a little milk and sugar and canned mandarins. Pour off the mandarin juice beforehand. But also with cherries or other fruits.
The curry ketchup is typical here. You are more likely to find something Indian or Arabic than something Mexican.

We distinguish boiled ham ("gekochter Schinken" the pink one) and smoked ham ("geräucherter Schinken", the red one). From Smoked Ham (it is not on the plate), there are four very different flavours popular: "Schwarzwälder" (from Germany), "Südtiroler" (from the northern german-spoken part of Italy in the Alps, delicious with bread and red whine), "Parma-Schinken" (from Italy) and "Serrano" (from Spain). Boild ham is eaten at easter and together with asparagus. A very popular spring meal is cooked white asparagus, cooked potatoes and sliced boiled ham. We eat it with the blue boxed "Sauce Hollondaise" from the "Thomy" brand - you only have to heaten it in the microwave oven. I think everyone knows it in Germany. Asparagus is only sold until June 24 by law. The plants needs the summer to grow. You have now 2 month left to try.

I think you will become a sausage person sooner or later, the quality and variety of sausages is really good in Germany. And try to buy bread and other bakery items at a local bakery, it will taste much much better.
    Some suggestions:
Anything with Waldmeister (Woodruff; a plant that is kind of unknown outside of german speaking countries). It comes as a syrup to mix with water and get some nice drinks (look for a dark green syrup) or as Brause (powder; famous Brand is Ahoj-Brause) which you can also mix with water or if you're brave enough just pour it right into your mouth.
Mett (ground pork). Don't be afraid, it is supposed to be eaten raw. Just spread it on bread, add some grounded black pepper and some raw onions. Believe me it is delicious.
Anyway, hope you're having a good time in Germany :D

The word "cremig" or "creme" is used to describe the texture of the items. The Honey is lime-tree blossom honey, that means that the bees are only around lime trees. Thats the reason why it has its specific taste. There are lots of other honeys. I recommend to look at local farmer's markets and search a stand with different honeys and taste them there ;)
You said you prefer milk chocolate, I really recommend you "KinderSchokolade". Its a brand and they have all sorts of delicious items.

I think "lime tree" is British English and might be confusing. Apparently they are called linden tree in the US (?) The light-colored honeys (Lindenblütenhonig, Rapshonig (from the canola blossoms) often taste flowery. Darker honeys (Waldhonig, e.g.) taste quite differently. And I would definitely eat it on buttered bread...

If you eat something with bread, do some butter or margerine on the bread-slice at first. Only then put your cheese, bacon, salami and so on on top: it makes the bread and the toppings more tasty (fat = taste-amplifier) and let ist chew and swallow more easily. Many people eat bread only with butter or margarine on top from time to time. Bread without butter is to dry to chew with enjoyment.
    The meat you choose is:
    - Kochschinken-Scheiben= slices of boiled Bacon: its very common for Sandwiches - put it together with salami and cheese on a sliced baguette and heat it up in the oven. It has mild taste and low fat...
    - Räucherschinken-Scheiben = slices of smoked Bacon: it has stronger taste and ist vry salty. Put it on toast- or whitebread (dont forget the Butter first) and put a fried egg on top with some ground pepper (german: gemahlener Pfeffer), or you can frie it and put it to scrambled eggs. Or just on bread-slices (again: with butter/ margarine first...) - some people than may take mayonaise on top - like me :-)

You did good to ask the employees how to eat this stuff. I've seen some of that youtube videos people testing food and have no clue how something is eaten the "proper" way.
You just scrached the surface though. There are really a lot of cheese and sausage variations in germany, sometimes looking all the same but with very different tastes. THe next thing that is not easy to grasp as foreigner is the many different kind of breads, and which one is good for what (even if it depends on tastes somewhat).
I would recommend not to go for the cheap stuff from the supermarket in the beginning, because when you buy expensive bread at a (good) bakery, you know what it is supposed to taste like. The bread from chain bakeries can be ok-ish, bist from most it isn't very good either. In Bavaria you have Pfisterer though, which is a chain bakery where you actually can buy good bread.
If you want really good bread, you have to search for a bakery that bakes it's own bread, which is sadly getting really rare nowadays. Bread is a really important thing in germany, and usually the thing expatriats from germany miss most in other countries.About the honey, it say "linden blossom honey" (Lindenblütenhonig).

We have lots of different kinds of lunch meats (we call it Wurst) in Germany - enjoy! Find a butcher shop (outside of the supermarket) and try all the different versions. If you find a small local butcher the Wurst will usually taste better (each butcher has his/her recipes - the supermarket sells industrially made sausages and meats). If you feel adventurous at the butcher shop or in a German restaurant (if they have take-away or once they open up again), try "Wurstsalat". Depending on the region it is Wurst (similar to bologna), onions and pickles and sometimes cheese in a vinegar dressing - eat with bread.
Also find a locally operated and "family owned" bakery. It will be way better than baked goods from the supermarket or chain bakeries that bake pre-made stuff. You might have to ask around for a good bakery. Then try all the different kinds of bread and rolls! Also buy a "Butterbrezel".
As far as chocolate goes: try Kinderriegel and if the Hanuta (you got a special edition - not the regular one) was too dry for your taste, try Knoppers!
And the Ritter Sport chocolates have a special wrapper and therefore a "right" way to open them: ruclips.net/video/0SaFuKPX03U/видео.html&ab_channel=RitterSport

You missed the most important ingredient for a good bread: Butter!
You need different types of bakeries for the different things:
    1. Ham. You had 3 different types of ham you can eat on bread or breadrolls with butter:
    Bacon=Schweinebauch
    Smoked ham=geräucherten Schinken
Panna Cotta=Kochschinken /goes also great with Asparagus
2, Jam/Honey/Pasticcio Creme you can eat on bread or breadrolls with/without butter
I recommend Biopars Tannenhonig which is a dew honey So called because Instead of taking nectar, bees can take honeydew, the sweet secretions of aphids or other plant-sap-sucking insects. Honeydew honey is very dark brown, with a rich fragrance of stewed fruit or fig jam, and is not as sweet as nectar honeys. In this case it stems of fir trees.
    3. The orange "creme" inn the middle seems to be Obatzter. You can try it with breadrolls or brezel (Brezn).
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obatzda
    4. The Curry Ketchup goes great with Bratwurst (roasted sausage) or french fries.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bratwurst
Btw please buy bakeries in the bakery. The quality is quite a difference.
Welcome and enjoy your life in Germany!

Hi, i am a Swabian neighbor from Stuttgart. FYI in Europe we have hundreds of different cheeses, the Gouda, originated in the Netherland in the town of...Gouda, you tried is a "young" mild one, you can buy a middle aged one they are a bit more intense and salty and the old Gouda. the darkern the Gouda is the more it is aged. No worries the darkest is a little bit orange.
As you have noticed already we have a LOT of different bread and buns in Germany. Some of them you can buy in the morning in our bakeries. So you can choose ALWAYS wich bread, or bun you would like with your food. And sausages you will find also a great number of sorts. It has to do with making food durable for times like winter, when you could not bring in fresh food. Thats also the reason for smoked ham and so on.
helps you a bit with your "einkaufen". Suggestion: Go by car to a big "Supermarkt" and buy what you need for the next time. Buy your fresh milk and butter and so on in the smaller market round the corner.

This is about the cheese cream.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obatzda
Honey normally gets creamy in time or is creamy depending on what flowers the bees mostly found. Fluid honey is normally processed honey.
Always look for "Imker Honig". Imker Honig is handmade by a beekeeper while other honey is processed an mixed.
In Europe Konfitüre is regulated. Meaning, it is only fruit and sugarand pektin. The sugar is added that it has together with the fruit sugar 60%.
With 60% sugar you do not need preservatives.

Another typical German food is „Aufschnitt“. It’s not a special kind of food but it‘s a mix of different sliced sausages you can order at the butcher’s counter. While waiting at the butchers counter long enough you will probably hear some customers order „Aufschnitt“. And talking about butchers that much will help you with the German pronunciation of the letter „u“, too. 😉

Enjoy your tour guys. I worked on Graf too but returned to states a year ago! I lived in Weiden right on old town in front of the old town hall. Once the pandemic is over, and life is back to normal, check out that town. You'll like it. Viel Spaß! ;-)

Ritter Sport is produced in Waldenbuch in Baden-Württemberg. There is a store where you can buy lot more than in a normal shop. And there is a museum where you can go through and see the history of the chocolate. I lived in this town for 4 years. It is very beautiful with an old city and castle too. So maybe you can travel one day to Waldenbuch.

You should try "Russisch Brot", which translates to russian bread but is in fact a wafer-esk, crispy sweet in the shape of letters :) it has a delicious caramel taste and i love it since I was a child.

    Hi, this was well entertaining.
There are a lot of things I could recommend, but let’s focus on these examples here. Regarding the bread you have chosen you may notice how this more strongly tasting bread (most probably rye based) combines with savoury cheese/ham/wurst on one side and with sweet spread like honey/marmalade on the other side. You surely know there are lot of bread types here in Germany, so I recommend to test sweet spreads with brighter bread types (higher wheat content). And don't forget to add butter, which may taste different to what you are used from the US.
To dive deeper into this topic I recommend to experiment with the Waldbeeren marmalade/cream more. It is a kind of classic to do layers in combination with Frischkäse (e.g. Philadelphia) or Quark. So take a slice of bread, add butter, Frischkäse/Quark and at least marmalade. This sequence also promotes the fruite colors.
    Have a nice meal!

Sauerkraut or varieties of cole slaw are usually served when you have a big piece of pork meat that has fat on it. The acid of the Kraut will soften up the fat flavour and make it easier digestible and you dont have your whole mouth filled with fat. So the combination of both makes it good.

We have to export "Hela Curry Katchup" every time we visit my brother in law abroad as he loves these. They have three different grades of spicy - green cap is the least spicy which you got. Red is more spicy and black cap is the most spicy version of this. As you you like that one, try it best with "Bratwurst".
About chocolate: Find your "Aldi" and get "Moser Roth" chocolates. This is really quallity chocolate like Lindt but for a good price. And open "Ritter Sport" (both the small ones or the big ones) just by breaking them in the middle.
The stuff you did not like is "Obatzda", a typical bavarian stuff. Try "Wurstsalat" to put on your bread or really daring, try "Mett":
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mett
It must be eaten very fresh, best get it and eat it directly.

For salad dressing I would recommend "Sylter Salatfrische" my preferred brand is "Zum Dorfkrug" it is yogurt based and reminds me a little bit of ranch dressing. I just hope you're not to far south, because it is more common in the northern part of Germany. If you are really craving something from home try to get it at the commissary on base. If you can't get it there, try DIY. Lots of recipes on the internet. 25 years ago I went from Germany to the USA (Holloman AFB) for four years an got thrown in at the deep end 😉 My first trip to the supermarket was a nightmare, I just needed some milk for our coffee and there were these huge gallon and half gallon jugs with different fat contents and vitamins in an endless aisle 😂 I learned how to bake bread and cake and cook or bake a lot of other stuff from scratch to get a little taste of home. All the best to you guys and welcome to Germany 😊

The honey "cream" is just honey. It comes in two varieties, the clear liquid one you probably know, and this cloudy, creamy one, sometimes also liquid, sometimes not. Honey does not easily spoil, but you should be careful with the creamy kind if it seperates in a creamy and a clear part. That means that it should be eaten very soon before it goes bad.

  • @TomKruhs

I think the big slice of ham is cooked ham. This is injected with a salt solution. You have the high quality one. The cheap one is round.
I think that's also the one in the pasta salad. The curry ketchup is very popular in Germany. I have that one, and "your" Heinz ketchup at home.
If you follow the recommendations, and try "Thüringer Mett", or Mettbrötchen, don't worry.
It is strictly controlled. Certainly with onions. ;-)

The Spread is Obazda - Camembert mixed with spices like pepper, onion etc and sometimes beer. Its a very traditional bavarian spread you eat most commonly in the beer garden with you beer and pretzels. The taste is special but it really differs depending on where you eat it so maybe you should give it a try again in a traditional beer garden.
Curry Ketchup is quite common in Germany. We use it for Currywurst of course and some for everything you could use ketchup for eg fries.
The honey ist just the creamy one, so thats also real honey. We have it in two types: clear and creamy
