  • On Friday, February 9th 2024 the Wise County/City of Norton Community Remembrance Project assembled residents for the re-installation of the Equal Justice Initiative marker recognizing the extra-judicial killing of Black coal miner David Hurst.
In November of 1920, an elderly woman living in the Kent Junction community had accused a Black man of attacking her, spurring a railroad crew into a manhunt. Hurst was arrested and taken to the Wise County Jail. A white mob soon seized him from the jail, hung him and mutilated his corpse.

Unfortunately, the hatred will never stop. Racism is passed on from generation to generation. The cycle must be broken before healing can begin.

That's why teaching historical truth to youth is important. This marker does that.
