My favorite little moment in this episode is how Bakugou immediately stops his attack when Uraraka collapses, showing mercy and dignity. But as soon as she starts crawling and trying to get back up, he assumes a fighting stance again, showing respect and acknowledgment towards her which is very very rare for his character. He's not just some hot-head bully, he's serious about being a pro and is willing to respect those who earn it.
I could easily see a different type of hothead just stand idly watching until she crawls close enough to touch without him realising and just winning the match. So I appreciate the conscious effort by the animators to include him squaring up again, it’s these consistent subtle touches that really show properly how smart he is.
Him just referring to her by name, especially to a person who’s quirk is so much weaker than his in terms of physical power (which is totally how his mindset works), is a huge moment that often flies over everyone’s head.
Respect for those who earn it, save for Midoriya, who is a very specific trigger for him and thus Bakugo at this point in the story is genuinely unable to acknowledge his strengths or respect him because he feels doing so is the same as admitting he himself is weak. He doesn't have the same hang-ups with Uraraka and Kirishima as he does with Midoriya, thus why getting him to respect them is relatively less of an obstacle.
Everyone focuses on Uraraka in this episode, for obvious reasons. But this is also an episode where we see and learn a lot about Bakugo. This is the first time we see him in a fight where he isn't fighting aggressively. He's on defense all match, because he actually recognizes how potentially dangerous Uraraka is, and that he needs to be cautious. We hear his arms crackling before his big blast against the falling rocks, and his arms are shaking afterwards, showing that he has his limits, and he basically hit them in this fight. He puts on a good face, but he was struggling there, and it wasn't nearly as easy for him as people would assume. As soon as Uraraka falls, he stops. He's not looking to go too far, he's just looking to win. You could even call the look on his face as she falls "concerned." But as soon as she starts crawling again, he assumes a battle stance, because he doesn't want to take chances, and recognizes that she could still be dangerous. And the obvious, after the fight when people are after him about beating up on a frail little girl, he's pretty much the only one that calls her strong. As much as Bakugo puts on a great exterior of being a tough guy who's aggressive, hotheaded and crazy. He's very analytical, intelligent, strategic, and even respectful, in his own way. He really hides it all well, but he's much more than just a hothead with a violence boner, and the signs of that are there, and have been there from the beginning.
I think this is actually his toughest match in the sports festival looking back. If Shoto went all out then it woulda been his hardest but Shoto was distracted. For everyone else he had a strategy, was setting the pace and picking them apart. For Ochako she made him use his full output, made him nervous and set the pace while surprising him.
@@magortomgood observations if you can rewatch the fight with shoto and notice how his tornado move is a move built to counter shotos fire has it can dispel it or mix it with his tornado to use as a weapon
Bakugo acknowledging Uraraka is such a great moment. But the one I notice everyone misses is Bakugo genuinely thinks Deku is going to make it to the finals so they can settle what happened last time. Is he emotionally in ANY WAY capable enough to recognize Deku as a proper threat? No. But that is a COOL Freudian slip.
9:00 for those who didn't catch it. He wasn't saying that was close because she nearly hit him. It was close because to cover himself he had to create a massive blast. Its his sweat he explodes and he nearly blew up the sweat still in his skin, hence the trembling
Bakugo is the kind of person who grants his opponent respect, regardless of gender. Holding back on her would essentially be telling her that he thinks less of her or considers her to be a weaker opponent. The audience and Present Mic were in a way looking down on her because she looks frail and is a girl. But Bakugo saw her as a person, as a hero, and a worthy adversary and wanted to fight where they both gave it their all. We saw that before the match began, Bakugo seemed confused when he read that he'd be fighting Uraraka. He didn't even remember who she was. But after he saw the resolve she displayed, he respected her enough to remember her name.
One neat detail is that when she collapses Bakugo immediately drops his fighting stance, but the moment she begins crawling he jumps back into it. Even at the very end he acknowledged her determination and refused to let his guard down.
Are you saying he respects Ururaka more than he respects any of their classmates, or that he respects her more than their classmates respect her? The wording of that confused me.
One thing i find interesting about the "balugo calls people by their name when he respects them" thing is that he doesnt call deku by his name, despite pretty obviously respecting him. I mean, when the plan almost beat him, he immediately assumed it had to have come from deku. He acknowledges deku as a threat and sees him as smart enough to make other people threats. Yet he still refuses to call him by his actual name
Bakugo is one of the worst opponents for Uraraka, because even if she made him float, he can just use his explosions to fly around and still fight fairly normal against her.
He'll have a hard time controlling his quirk. A single blast might send him out of the bound. Deku has to train to move in air while using Float, so basically that's what will happen to Bakugou too because he isn't used to moving without gravity.
Yeah I used to think that too but someone pointed out everything Bakugou knows about flying relies on physics, momentum and gravity specifically. Taking those completely is gonna mess with his inner calculations massively.
Yeah, I always thought this was one aspect that was really missed. With the focus on the ‘touch him’ strategy everyone keeps mentioning the plot ignores the ‘what next’ question that would actually be important. And the way we have literally already seen bakugo leap to other cavalry teams, pretty much fly over the minefield, the flip over deku in the 2v2s he is pretty comfortable in the air. I mean if he wanted he could probably pseudo-fly I’m his fight already without the anti-gravity assist.
@@jacobwilkinson5479 yes bakugo wouldn't be completely caught off guard to immobilize him immediately, but he would still be caught off guard for the rest of the fight. He knows exactly how strong of a blast he needs to move himself throughout the air but as soon as he has no weight he has to figure it out all over again. One small explosion could send him hurtling through the sky and cause him to spin because he can't balance himself.
I’m of the opinion that Bakugo’s habit of not using people’s real names isn’t a matter of purposeful disrespect. With Bakugo, I think it’s more likely that he just doesn’t pay attention to other people in general, so he genuinely does not remember most people’s names. When he does use someone’s real name, it means that he cares enough about them (as an enemy or as a kindred spirit) that he is able to remember their name.
bakugou's respect for uraraka is so cool and their dynamic is one of my 1a favorites. they're not friends but they recognize each other as strong, and earning bakugou's respect is not easy, which makes it that much cooler
I think they are definitely much better rivals for each other than bakugo and deku. Especially knowing deku is in a totally different wheelhouse (aka the demigod variety) I feel like they would honestly work really well to build themselves up together and love the idea that they are the real rivals and gym buddies. Deku is still human, but at a certain point it’s more entertaining for a boulder to fight a tree than a mountain ( idk if anything I just said made sense it’s almost 4 in the morning)
4:25 Ok, even if she didn’t say anything when she snuck up on him, before she even said anything you clearly see Bakugo looking in her direction, so he already knew she was there, so it doesn’t matter wether she said something or not as long as the person is fully aware that you’re there then your sneak attack would fail.
Even though Uraraka lost in the end, she was one of the fighters that left the biggest impression in the first round. She was at a huge disadvantage considering she had nothing to use her quirk on except herself and Bakugo, but she used Bakugo's temper and thought of such a great strategy that if Bakugo hadn't reacted so quickly and had the energy for such a huge attack, she most likely would have won.
To be fair, Bakugo acts more hot headed than he actually is. He's actually very smart, resourceful, and dedicated. We see some great examples of his strength, skill, intelligence, and even leadership as we go.
as I always point out once they start the internships Gunhead the combat hero sent her an invitation because he saw her and thought "I want to work with that little spitfire"
@@saltyk9869bakugo isn't really "hot headed" he is sometimes kind of arrogant however the main reason why he even acts like that is because of his quirk explosion that releases nycolygene which is the mature bakugo uses to create explosions in his sweat and this said matter is actually known for slowing down the user's heart attack so if he isn't always angry or in a high stressed he might pass out or even die bakugou is actually highly intelligent even smarter than ochako herself
One thing incredible about the detail of how bakugo sees her is that until midnight puts her hand up to get him to stand down, hes ready to keep fighting because he sees her as someone that strong and threatening to his win
This was definitely my favorite fight, urarakas strategy, bakugos display of strength, its such a good episode. My favorite detail is that when she says she can still fight, even though she's down bakugo still gets into a defensive position. He doesn't underestimate her like the rest of the crowd, and he believes she's strong enough to continue fighting. She's earned his respect. I think bakugo is such an interesting character and is definitely in the top five favorites for me
Poor Uraraka. All she wanted to do to was to help her struggling family... the phone call was so heartbreaking... I feel like so many people who hate Uraraka tend to make her feel really one-note (i.e., Deku's love interest and nothing more). That's not the sole reason, but it is one I can't help but have seen numerous times. Listen, those two are perfect for each other, but not every bit of her screen time has to revolve around Deku. If that was the case, it would make her feel pretty boring. She has depth, backstory, compassion. I swap between who I consider best MHA girl a lot, but Ochako ain't no slouch in my eyes. She's great.
With Bakugo, rather than it being "I wont call you by your name till you've earned my respect", I think it's more "I wont learn your name till you've earned my attention." I dont think he's purposefully avoiding saying people's names, but he only puts the effort in to remember the names of those he respects.
The best part of this episode for me is the fact that Bakugo pays zero attention to the people booing him in the crowd or even Aizawas defense of him. I'm sure he doesn't even notice because he's focused soley on Uraraka. Pretty sure she's also the first person that he refers to by name
Bakugo i think realizes more than anyone else that they are training to be heros. That means the villains won't take easy on them so training on half measures and ideal situations won't do anyone any good. He goes all out because he knows their enemies wont hold back.
This is my fave early Ochako and Bakugo moment. She comes up with a great strategy and makes Bakugo nervous, only stopped by her lack of stamina but still willing to fight. On the other hand he shows restraint by only blasting her hard enough to knock her down without serious injury(when we're shown he coulda made an explosion big enough to kill her that can push All Might away), calls her by her name respecting her resolve and then shuts it down when people try to minimize her effort and ability by saying she isn't frail or weak. Great highlight for both characters
the narrative is shifting the audience support towards uraraka, but i can't be the only one who started rooting for bakugou when the audience started booing him for fighting ... in a fight
And acting like it should be easy to knock her out of bounds when he's using *explosions.* The fact he can hit her at all safely is impressive, and they're acting like he should just let up on that control and use more power to send her flying.
i love what aizawa said because honestly if i was was fighting bakugo and heard that hero shouting that bakugo should just send me out of bounds and stop toying with me i would be so offended and disheartened it would be like being told your trash and dont have a chance by a professional before you even finish
I love that even though Deku has a small role in this episode, we still get to see his character shine. When he's confronted by Bakugo and Endeavor, he is nervous and tries to remove himself from the situation. It's only after they insult someone else that he finds his strength and stands up to them. Really calls into mind the line "He rages for others"
It's not necessarily a good thing but I love that Deku's attitude when facing intimidating people changes the moment they talk badly about his friends. Him trembling just at the sight of Bakugou but standing up to him on Ururaka's behalf and then doing the same with Endeavor for Shoto. He's such a good friend.
Bakugou is definitely my favorite character in the show. You really are going to enjoy his character development. Plus I also believe that Bakugou will become the number #1 Hero
This fight had a similar feel to me as the fight between Hinata and Neji, in Naruto. Of course the big differences are that unlike Neji, Bakugo wasn't out for blood, and Uraraka was in much better shape at the end of the fight than Hinata was. What I loved the most about this fight though was Bakugo's attitude towards Uraraka. He wasn't pulling punches but he wasn't being cruel; and overall was very respectful towards her. I think this is when I really started to like Bakugo as a character.
I think Uraraka is the only classmate using a flip phone, because...finances. But anyway enough about that, everyone's gushed about this episode, and I love it.
Flip phones were also just super popular in Japan for far longer than they were in the west. They kept using them generations into releases of smart phones
i remember this episode meaning a lot to me when i first saw it as a younger girl. its nice and really refreshing to see shonen anime not treat the female characters like glass and not shy away from fights between a male and a female character like this. On top of this, it deliberately makes a point of showing that even if Uraraka lost, she still displayed a lot of strength, tenacity, and wit that even a character like bakugo acknowledges as admirable and is one of the only characters that takes her seriously.
This is the episode that cemented Uraraka as one of my favourite characters in the show. She put up such an amazing fight and even earned the respect of Bakugo, not to mention her wholesome motives. Such a lovable character. I also find it ironic that eveyone else is trying to be nice to Uraraka, but they only end up pitying her while the one that they're getting angry at, Bakugo, ends up being the actual one who truly shows respect and acknowledgement towards her. Bakugo is such a well written character as well.
When ever I think about the plan to make Bakugou float I always think it would be a terrible idea With his explosions being able to propel him it would just make him more maneuverable I feel like the first few blast would probably be a bit more powerful than he would need then after that he just becomes terrifying
This is still by far my favourite single episode of MHA, Urarakas determination, Bakugos calculated fighting, Her phone call with her dad, Deku growing a pair and staring down Endeavor, so many 10/10 scenes for different reasons
don't think a lot of ppl got this but she actually managed to tire him out in the fight and his hands actually started to hurt something that not a lot of opponents manage to do
I love the little details of Bakugo having to brace himself with his other hand before letting off the giant explosion. And the fact that his arm twitches in pain just afterward. He even says, "That was close." Uraraka made him work for that win.
This was the turning point on my view of Katsuki when I first watched this episode. It showed much more of his mindset and how much respect he has as a fighter in this. Of course there is a lot in this episode shown just for him alone. However, it was also the first episode to frustrate me as well. I was disappointed with how the crowd was reacting, but I was more disappointed that Present Mic was so unbiased in the match from the beginning and then treated Bakugo like a villian for defending himself. It unfortunately made me not like his character very much from then on. It did push me to love Aizawa even more though.
I love this show so much, so many emotions, that's why it's currently my fav, and it's my childhood anime too, watched it when I was like 9, 10, and maybe 11.
A little less-understood note that people often miss. The reason Bakugo assumed Deku came up with that plan isn’t just because they’re friends. It’s because it was such a good plan. As much as Bakugo rags on Deku, he has always acknowledged Deku’s brilliance in his own way. Anytime someone does something extremely intelligent, he assumes it was Deku’s plan because he knows just how smart he is.
Oooh, I interpreted more as - "that desperate plan!" - him thinking it was Deku's plan because it was so self-destructive, and that's very much Deku. XD
This episode has some truly great Bakugo and Ochacko moments, but it also has a couple sublty great Midoriya moments. Both Bakugo and Endeavor approach Midoriya, and his immediate reaction is to cower. His voice gets super high and scared, but when Uraraka and Shoto are mentioned he gains his composure and isnt scared to stand up for them. When it comes to others Midoriya is fearless.
Even years later, I'm pretty sure this is still my favorite fight in all of My Hero Academia. To begin with, I just love the strategy of it all -- and how it all depends on the two of them respecting each other as opponents. The plan wouldn't work at all if Bakugo let himself get distracted. If he'd turned to shout at the hecklers, or just stopped focusing on Uraraka for any reason, he'd have spotted the floating rocks, and been able to counter it much earlier. But he was laser-focused on her, instead. He knew she was a formidable opponent, and so didn't take his eyes off of her for one second. And that gave her the opening she needed. And she knew he would act that way. If she had doubted he'd focus entirely on her, if she thought he was just a contemptuous blowhard or that he'd be sexist enough to not take a girl seriously, she'd have expected him to look away at some point, and never thought her plan would work. Uraraka respected Bakugo as an opponent. Bakugo respected Uraraka as an opponent. This wasn't a bully vs. a frail girl, and neither of them ever thought of it that way for a moment. It was two prospective heroes giving their all against each other. And more than that, I love how Uraraka is allowed to get bruised and scuffed and sweaty and bleeding in a way so few female characters ever get to. This isn't some clean, delicate, beautiful fight -- it's a knock-down, drag-out brawl, and she gets to get dirty in a way far more typical of male characters. Even her outfit for most of the fight -- the tank top that shows off her strong arms -- is something you rarely see on women, at least not without it getting a lot racier. There's nothing male gaze-y about her presentation here -- she's not there to be ogled, she's there to fight. She's the subject, not an object. There are longer fights later on in the series, there are more spectacular ones, there are ones with higher stakes. But this is still, by far, my favorite.
There's actually a really cool easter egg in this episode: when Tetsutetsu (tetsutetsu) lost and said he should've eaten more iron. In the anime Fairy Tail, there's a character named Gajeel that gains power by eating iron. Gajeel and Tetsutetsu share a voice actor, in both the sub AND dub
Character: You wouldn't hurt a girl, right? There's no reason to be brutal to someone who's weaker than you. Bakugo: There's no reason to hold back. EVERYONE is weaker than me.
6:54 that "badass" from Montana is so well deserved, that is my favorite frame of Uraraka ever. She's so insanely tough and cool in that moment, it's my favorite episodes of her. Maybe my favorite in all the show in general
The fact that uraraka is durable enough to survive full own 5000°C nicolygene explosions shows just how strong she is normally any person who got hit by a explosion would either die or suffer injuries that are painful af
I heard it so many times before, Testutestu's voice actor is the same person who plays Gajeel in Fairytail, the Iron Dragon Slayer. So him saying he needed to est more iron is hilarious to me and such a fun nod to his other character (intentional or not)
When Bakugo says "die" to someone he doesn't mean it literally. He kills their will to fight and make them give up. That's why Bakugo told Uraraka she wasn't dead yet.
Nothing, but I feel like weight is such an important factor that he wouldn't be able to adjust his blast power enough to account for his lack of weight, causing him to fly out of bounds.
Never underestimate the sweet girl. Kind of like how Mockingbird went a little nuts when she thought someone murdered her ex-husband. Bakugo knew not to underestimate her (but kind of still did). He pays more attention than you might think. Bakugo is messed up because his whole life, adults heaped praise on him for his power. Having real competition is new for him. Notice that she has an older dumb phone instead of a smartphone like the other students? The text on her phone roughly says "chichi-chan" or "papa-chan," a very cutesy way of saying Dad. Montana has Endeavor pegged. He's a terrible father. Arguably worse than Magneto, but not as bad as Thanos. Much, much worse than Mister Fantastic, who is merely negligent. Hint: do you notice how often Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods are depicted together? They are implying something, but I don't remember if the show ever explicitly says it.
I never understood why everyone thought Uraka could win if she just made Bakugo float. He has no problem maneuvering in the air with his quirk. Might be a annoyance but I doubt that would beat him.
Well, it's not an auto knockout by any means, but it IS a big disadvantage and gamechanger. Think about what happened to IIda back around episode 8 when he suddenly lost his mass and couldn't compensate, going out of control. And he was more experienced at using jet propulsion at this point! It is entirely possible Bakugo could have sent himself out of bounds before he could learn what sort of touch he needed and even then he'd have been more vulnerable, especially since Uraraka could have cut the zero gravity at any moment it was advantageous. (Admittedly, the experience thing could still be argued either way because Bakugo has fewer ingrained habits, but I think you get the point.)
@supermoogle07 that's because she would just win due to Bakugo either not using his explosions and floating out of bounds or try to use it explosion and totally lose his bearings and spin out of bounds. You don't seem to quite understand how much goes into Bakugo being able to "fly" with gravity. Without it, he'll definitely blast himself away. His flying isn't like Endeavour's.
weightless would be very different he would spin way differently from the backlash and would need to adjust the power used when he has trained so extensively on moving in midairt he is able to use it in a fight. he'd have so much trouble not losing control it would come down to pure fighting technique when she is way heavier than him
@@ebrimajallow3165 I feel I have to defend supermoogle just a little here. Yes, it is more likely than not Uraraka would win after touching him. At LEAST 70-30 odds, even by shonen standards. But it would NOT be a guarantee. This would be the equivalent of her successfully putting him in a powerful hold or supermove. But, neither in shonen or real life, would that mean he'd lost in that moment.
Bakugou not taking it easy in a girl reminds me of Nick Fury going to hit a women and the other dude telling him he can't and Nick is like "why not?" 🤨. In their fight if you hear carefully Bakugou said that that fight was close but Uraraka told her parents she wasn't even close. Bakugou acknowledged her strength and capability. When she fell he stops but as soon as she says she wasn't done yet, he got back to a fighting pose. It annoyed me that professionals and his classmates thought he should have gone easy on her. They are the same age receiving the same training, if he did that shell know he's holding back and will think that Bakugou think of her as weak. She wants a challenge to get stronger. Do you think that in the field you have to go easy on female villains? If they're dangerous causing chaos, you have to take action. Also, where do these grown as adults get the nerve to boo at a child. These are freshmen's! First years! Minors! WTF!!
Here's a thought. Our entire solar system is caught in our sun's gravitational pull, while it orbits the center of our galaxy. The entire Sol system is careening through space at incalculable speeds. It's a good thing Uraraka has zero gravity, and not ZERO gravity. Imagine she touches you, and you suddenly slam into the wall at mach 40
There's a lot I don't like about this fight. For one thing, if she uses her quirk on Bakugo, he can just use his blasts to fly and stay in the arena. I don't think you can logically get around this unless you take a lot of liberties with how that interaction should work. Another thing is Bakugo's blast and the whole, "he's not holding back" idea. He could have just blown her away with a massive blast. She couldn't even dodge his small ones what possible reason could that translate to her being able to dodge a big one? I can see him being careful at first sure, but after a blast there's nothing stopping him from using that momentum to at the very least charge a huge blast that should have just blown her away. I really like the message the author was conveying with the fight. 'Don't underestimate Ochaco, she can fight, she's strong on her own etc. I think that's great. I really do like the ending impression the author gives us of her and what it does for her character development, but I just think the way he got there was illogical and ham-fisted.
Tbf, she was actively trying not to dodge + his big blasts hurt him, too + if he was weightless, he'd have to adjust to how much force he'd need to move around somehow BEFORE he used his quirk again or else he'd knock himself out of the ring
After nearly spraining his arm, and saying her attack was close, Bakugo called Uraraka by name instead of nickname, smiled, and challenged her. Then when Bakugo’s classmates started bullying him for not showing mercy on a frail girl, he replied (in the subtitles at least), exactly what part of her was frail? It would seem Bakugo respects Uraraka.
I thought of it as not quite a fracture. They showed twitches of pain and I’ve seen them do that in later episodes too. I think he’s started building a resistive strength to it. But, hey, this is Bakugo, who knows, he could have gotten a few hairline fractures and not let on or or tell anyone because that’s what he does too.
As much as Bakugo annoys me sometimes, he doesn't underestimate his classmates, he fights to win, he respects them as people and as future heroes he thinks he will be number one but that isn't arrogance, he doesn't treat anyone different from each other, male or female, he knows his skills and he prepares for theirs. And that is something I respect about him. Even when he's talking about killing everyone. XD
So they don't really emphasize it much in the dub but what Bakugou meant by "that was close" was he was pushed to his limits which is why his hand was shaking. He'd used his quirk too much and it was starting to take a big toll on his body
While the dub line from Bakugo "I wouldn't exactly call that girl frail" serves a similar purpose, I do prefer his japanese line "What part of her was frail?", the way it is posed more as a question than a statement, implying that anything about her could be frail is not remotely true in his mind.
Aizawa's full of it. That's the kind of excuse abusers use to justify their toxicity. I completely agree with the first guy in the crowd and frankly think Bakugo should have been expelled back after that first test.
Societal structure due to history is a really interesting topic. Before metal weapons societies were pretty equal. Roles were different but women actually gathered more food than men did hunting. A lot of cultures used to track maternal lines too. The gender roles didn't reverse until we started farming and conquering cities. Things men were just better suited for. Also something that isn't relevant in the first world yet gender norms still persist. Ironically women make better marksmen due to the ability to distinguish more color (sexual dimorphism from out hunter gatherer days) and women also have a lower center of gravity which helps with long range shooting. Yet we haven't even considered adapting this to modern warfare due to gender roles. There's even more I could get in to. Men can overpower women and we are better at throwing things but that doesn't mean women don't have natural advantages beyond child birth.
@@SubzeroBlack68 yes but I wasn't talking about sniping. I was talking about marksmanship. Sniping would be a terrible job for women simply for hygienic reasons. If you know you know. But DMs on short range patrol, watchtowers, holes up on roofs or in windows. It would make a slight difference especially if we ever go back to jungle warfare. My only point is that we don't consider the possibility simply because we place a lower value on a man's life and ignore the natural advantages of women. Equal doesn't have to be even and I'll applaud the military for trying but they aren't thinking outside the box with their gender situation. And if more girls knew they had natural advantages in marksmanship maybe more would consider those possibilities. Shooting can be a pretty fun sport. Id love to see more dudes humbled
25:51 Strictly speaking it's not just the strength, size or durability differences between men and women that are responsible for the general distaste of harming a woman, there is also the fact women are seen as intrinsically valuable due to their ability to carry the next generation.
I think that even if Uraraka was able to touch Bakugou and float him, he could Just redirect himself With his explosions and easily get to Uraraka, so, very low chances for Uraraka to Win, maybe if some of the falling Debri knocks Bakugou uncouncious if Uraraka manages to touch him and distract him
Well. Here we are. The final round 1 match. And 2 main characters on the list. It seems simple on the surface but it is NOT. This battle is INCREDIBLY complex and a large VARIETY of this just…completely blows my mind with its nuance and crazy…everything. This is my favorite fight of the arc. Not season, but this one just has my favorite fun facts to research here for now. I have to once again point out that Uraraka DID have the path to get to the finals as no one on her side of the bracket OTHER than Bakugo had the likely tools to beat her. Even Dark Shadow which is still attached to Tokoyami, and Mina who while faster, I don’t think had any real means of wearing Uraraka out based on the hits she takes today. And the armor boys? Fodder. There is literally not a worse match up for either of them. Maybe Deku, but he’d break a finger to push them out so it’s still SOME guaranteed damage. Kirishima and Tetsu COULD break out of Todoroki’s ice possibly with semi free hands even if not REMOTELY a guarantee. Yeah. Uraraka is their most dangerous opponent. She would still end runner up as EVERY main character on the OTHER side of the bracket can beat her easy. So based on the information I see this episode…Uraraka and Bakugo are either dead even…or Uraraka has a slight edge. Here are the things Bakugo has FOR SURE before anyone gets upset at that. He has reflexes, speed, and a quirk advantage ON THIS FIELD. Uraraka has more stamina, resilience, and jeez, I’d even give her strength here. Now the reason I say this is because of the overall end result. Uraraka ends exhausted, and used literally everything she could. And let out a big enough move to force Bakugo to use everything he has to stop it. She takes hits the ENTIRE time, and STILL has the strength to do so. And she exhausts Bakugo’s quirk…which hit HIS limit and he stood still the WHOLE TIME. At the end, Bakugo would not have run towards her unless he COULD NOT do anymore long range blasts. His arm was creaking, which if I recall is his sweat glands popping. (Ouch!) So at the end, go figure, if Uraraka truly kept standing, Bakugo was in BIG trouble since he was although now the BEST brawler, but still a brawler and Uraraka is practically IMMUNE to that. (And I think Bakugo is WELL AWARE he could have been in trouble based on his acknowledging her. That’s not friendship like Kirishima, that’s saying he sees her as a worthy opponent.) If you disagree, I would say this. Who is stronger, the person who goes to carry the heavy thing while NOT physically spent and struggles, or the person who IS and they carry the same thing, and BOTH are successful and both struggle about the same. That’s the best analogy I got for this. The exhausted one is at the very least MORE LIKELY stronger. The big things that kept Uraraka from winning was the field more than Bakugo’s quirk. A blank field with no ammo? She HAS to let Bakugo hit her to get anything done. There’s no long distance strategy she can go with. That’s just a PAINFUL strategy, and Monoma acknowledges Uraraka is FORCING this result. Could she have done smaller moves to keep herself less harmed? Yeah, but only the big one would force Bakugo from his long range to short range quickly and not just a big opening. Would Uraraka win if she DID get him even though he can fly? I have next to no doubt. Bakugo’s flight he JUST learned TODAY he is still taking into account his own center of gravity and such. Destabilizing him with a removal of gravity and he will likely launch himself out or just spin uncontrollably if he uses the alternating hand blasts. Which would be a HUMILIATING way to lose. And also SO fitting that the bully kid with a bad temper ends up defeating himself trying to stay on the front foot. And I still think that Uraraka making an impact with him AFTER being made weightless will only end badly for Bakugo as she maintains her own gravity. Uraraka at worst falls over like all his other blasts (which I’m STILL not sure would happen because that is just an impossible thing to test. 2 objects impacting with 2 completely different gravity forces applied? I don’t think science will EVER get far enough to test that.) and Bakugo gets LAUNCHED backward. Then there is Uraraka’s quirk itself. And this is going to be a subject A LOT. Her quirk does the CRAZIEST things and when you know gravity laws, you are either wracking your brain figuring out what she did, and when you still make it all gravity focused powers to make it happen, she goes from strong, to OVERPOWERED and it happens SO fast. What does she demonstrate today that is NOT application of zero gravity? Decrease in gravity is the easy one. After every hit, she had to throw her rubble UPWARD to keep it out of Bakugo’s view. And yet it is all clustered a few short stories above the stadium. It STOPPED somewhere. In a dome like cluster all close together. That means it’s slowly dropping but the gravity is loose enough for it to not just drop immediately. And the difference between lower gravity and “no” gravity is MASSIVE. So she can likely MODERATE it. And if that’s not crazy enough, when she “drops” the rocks they act very uncharacteristic as well. They fall in waves, but all reach their target at AROUND the same time. It’s not a big wave, the cluster just moved DOWN to Bakugo. And it clearly did not all fall at once. There’s air resistance sure, but that is next to impossible to account for in animation, and in this situation…next to no way it would apply. And I noticed she did NOT say “release.” I’m not saying that HAS to be said, but could VERY well open the possibility for something else to occur. And considering the effect…that’s gotta be a VARIETY of different gravity INCREASES. That is the ONLY thing I can think of for THAT effect to occur. And THAT is such a broken concept I can’t even. If THAT gets honed enough she could freaking get 13’s black hole in her arsenal. And it NEVER stops being weird. And this just seems too deliberate to say Horikoshi just didn’t take this into account. He showed what happens to baseballs with no issue under zero gravity, so this just screams foreshadowing to me. If I weren’t literally studying astronomy, I would write this off too but Horikoshi clearly demonstrates he knows a LOT of subjects to make these characters develop so differently. And as if THAT doesn’t get any crazier, it STILL doesn’t stop. When a quirk recoil hits, the effect is constant. Bakugo’s arm creaks, Iida can’t move, Deku sheds body matter like a snake leaves its skin…except NOT healthy. Uraraka? She gets sick. SHE DIDN’T HERE. This is the biggest move she has done the whole show so far and she doesn’t get sick. So there’s something we are missing with her recoil too. So I looked for patterns. And I found it. She gets sick, but it’s when it happens that interests me. It’s not when she carries too much which she often carries LESS for that to happen. It’s when she switches between floating and releasing FREQUENTLY. That’s not a weight limit, that’s vertigo. The best way I can use an analogy is a car. Stomp on the brakes then stomp on the gas over and over at like 0mph to 10mph. You get car sick before long. Gas safely to 70 mph and then brake to 0 mph safely and you don’t. THAT is what I see with Uraraka’s getting sick recoil. That is the constant pattern I found. She only passed out because she (understandably) can’t take shockwaves and explosions to the face. She can take it for WAY longer than you would expect, but THAT is the damage that knocked her out. Not a quirk limit. Which is CRAZY that is what it takes to wear her down. I’m not boosting Uraraka unnecessarily. Even with ALL of this I found, Bakugo still won with the advantages he needed, AND came out near physically untouched outside his quirk, which is an invisible limit to the audience. (Speed was the big one) But to not give her the respect she deserves here under the various circumstances is just not something I can do. Uraraka at this point is at bare minimum an actual combat match. She gets faster or better in close range, and Bakugo might not have as favorable of a result. Aizawa had every right chewing out that hero for not seeing yes Bakugo was getting all the good hits, but she was TAKING all of them too and Bakugo HAS to go hard if he wants to win. And her plan was mainly taken from what she already learned from the Season 1 training match. So she was still looking for things like his big right hook, and knew Bakugo would get stronger with his sweat before she could wear him out. Deku likely had more combat info on Bakugo at MOST to give her. And for it to come out with that scene with her dad and family? Yeah I get misty eyed. AND she still goes to prioritize rooting for Deku when he wanted to comfort her. Sigh, nice to see good parents after meeting the Todoroki backstory conflict. And THAT is where we leave off. Endeavor challenging Deku with his son to show an All-Might similar power who is boss and Deku standing UP to Endeavor. (Even if it kinda sounds like Endeavor is rooting for Deku to get Todoroki on the “right” path.) And the two UNQUESTIONABLY strongest quirks in the tournament going head to head. If I didn’t love looking into Uraraka’s quirk rules so much, this next episode would be my favorite of the arc just like everyone else. (We got another doozy next time.)
@@HaydrogenBomb I’ve been writing infinite 100% for the past several DAYS now honestly and she’s STILL going nuts with her quirk. I haven’t said it outright but I have Uraraka’s quirk at #3 in this show. #5 including ties. Only beaten out by a tie of the super obvious and a quirk not yet seen in the anime. She is nothing short of BROKEN. I’ve counted 5 different unique gravity moderations in her arsenal, a different recoil, and exactly how her quirk would work to get these to be possible…and I’m not even done. Her quirk is nothing short of insanity.
@Kaempfdog I'll bet that episode's is a lengthy one. 😅 Looking forward to it, and you know what other Quirk I wanna see you break down? Hint: we've already seen it, but it awakens next season.
i always hear everyone talk about her disadvantage but nobody ever talks about his. wtf did they want bakugou to do in this situation? 1) use explosions powerful enough to both move her and cause her body sever damage 2) let her touch him and get knocked out of the ring himself (i never understood why he couldn’t just use his explosions to aim his body but if this universe says he can’t he can’t) 3) the only strategy i can think of that he would win, letting her wear herself out so she kos herself
Ong they get mad at bakugo for not holding back against a girl even though that's the literally the whole point to win no matter what if he tried to send her off bounds by touching her she would automatically win and if he used a giant explosion to send her off bounds he could heavily injure her if not literally kill her
25:53 yes, in this world, theres a lot of women that are badasses and very strong quirk wise, but this show tends to focus more on powerful guys fighting instead unfortunately, girls have their moments but, guys in the show get a lot more of those, they are all amazing moments though, which is why i love this show
The show doesn't make it super clear on the first watch but that big blast Bakugo let out to win the fight? That move HURTS him. A LOT. It doesn't look it, but he had to put his body on the line to beat her.

That's such a small but important detail that many people miss, glad there're people who catchee that
@@ICantThinkOfANameBFACTS
For Ochako she made him use his full output, made him nervous and set the pace while surprising him.
perfect comment 👌♥️.
@@magortomgood observations if you can rewatch the fight with shoto and notice how his tornado move is a move built to counter shotos fire has it can dispel it or mix it with his tornado to use as a weapon
YUP!
Kacchan is very definition of equality. He would fight a boy and definite lay hands on a girl..these hands are rated E for everyone
@kelonpie The last part of your sentence made me chuckle.

9:00 for those who didn't catch it. He wasn't saying that was close because she nearly hit him. It was close because to cover himself he had to create a massive blast. Its his sweat he explodes and he nearly blew up the sweat still in his skin, hence the trembling
@@SubzeroBlack68THIS
The huge blasts also have a huge amount of recoil. It legitimately hurts him to fire them off like that
Bakugo is the kind of person who grants his opponent respect, regardless of gender.
But after he saw the resolve she displayed, he respected her enough to remember her name.
i think Ururaka was not blown up because Bakugo wasnt aiming at her, more the ground under her feet to get her away, he didnt want to kill her
One neat detail is that when she collapses Bakugo immediately drops his fighting stance, but the moment she begins crawling he jumps back into it. Even at the very end he acknowledged her determination and refused to let his guard down.
AT the end, Bakugo thought that she was making a sneaky plan, but since it failed, she was gonna get serious.
He really thought she had more to give.
I love that Bakugo respects Uraraka more than any of her class mates
Her and Kirishima
Are you saying he respects Ururaka more than he respects any of their classmates, or that he respects her more than their classmates respect her? The wording of that confused me.
@@HaydrogenBombboth
One thing i find interesting about the "balugo calls people by their name when he respects them" thing is that he doesnt call deku by his name, despite pretty obviously respecting him. I mean, when the plan almost beat him, he immediately assumed it had to have come from deku. He acknowledges deku as a threat and sees him as smart enough to make other people threats. Yet he still refuses to call him by his actual name
By their last name*
Bakugo is one of the worst opponents for Uraraka, because even if she made him float, he can just use his explosions to fly around and still fight fairly normal against her.
He'll have a hard time controlling his quirk. A single blast might send him out of the bound. Deku has to train to move in air while using Float, so basically that's what will happen to Bakugou too because he isn't used to moving without gravity.
Yeah I used to think that too but someone pointed out everything Bakugou knows about flying relies on physics, momentum and gravity specifically. Taking those completely is gonna mess with his inner calculations massively.
@@kimj7645Knowing Bakugo he would’ve figured it out easily.
This episode simply KICKS ASS
I’m of the opinion that Bakugo’s habit of not using people’s real names isn’t a matter of purposeful disrespect. With Bakugo, I think it’s more likely that he just doesn’t pay attention to other people in general, so he genuinely does not remember most people’s names. When he does use someone’s real name, it means that he cares enough about them (as an enemy or as a kindred spirit) that he is able to remember their name.
No bullshit.. Seeing Ochako crying after trying so hard, it breaks my heart and made me cry a bit🤕😭
bakugou's respect for uraraka is so cool and their dynamic is one of my 1a favorites. they're not friends but they recognize each other as strong, and earning bakugou's respect is not easy, which makes it that much cooler
He may never admit it himself, but thats how he is
This was definitely my favorite fight, urarakas strategy, bakugos display of strength, its such a good episode.
I agree but honestly after this arc her character does turn bland and reduced to a love interest, and she's not the only victim to poor writing sadly
She is not Deku's love interest. She just had a one-sided crush
¿Quién la odia? :0
With Bakugo, rather than it being "I wont call you by your name till you've earned my respect", I think it's more "I wont learn your name till you've earned my attention." I dont think he's purposefully avoiding saying people's names, but he only puts the effort in to remember the names of those he respects.
"Remind me what your Quirks are. And also your names."
The best part of this episode for me is the fact that Bakugo pays zero attention to the people booing him in the crowd or even Aizawas defense of him. I'm sure he doesn't even notice because he's focused soley on Uraraka. Pretty sure she's also the first person that he refers to by name
I’m a bit late but I think kirashima was the first
Bakugo i think realizes more than anyone else that they are training to be heros. That means the villains won't take easy on them so training on half measures and ideal situations won't do anyone any good. He goes all out because he knows their enemies wont hold back.
I really love Present Mic and Eraser Head as commentators, their dynamic makes this festival 10 times better👍
Uraraka's phone call to her dad makes me cry EVERY GODDAMN TIME
9:32 nope, Bakugou DID expect Uraraka to try again. He was surprised when she collapsed in that moment
@@hopejaworski9097 so true. of course I also root for uraraka but bakugou was done so dirty in this entire competition imo
i love what aizawa said because honestly if i was was fighting bakugo and heard that hero shouting that bakugo should just send me out of bounds and stop toying with me i would be so offended and disheartened it would be like being told your trash and dont have a chance by a professional before you even finish
When ever I think about the plan to make Bakugou float I always think it would be a terrible idea
With his explosions being able to propel him it would just make him more maneuverable
I feel like the first few blast would probably be a bit more powerful than he would need then after that he just becomes terrifying
I love the prejudices undertones in this episodes!!!
It was genius and the best part of the episode!!
you wonder why i pock aizawa as my all time favorite character ?
well this episode answers the question
get ready for next week! Deku vs Todoroki is gonna be lit🔥🔥 ❄❄
This is still by far my favourite single episode of MHA, Urarakas determination, Bakugos calculated fighting, Her phone call with her dad, Deku growing a pair and staring down Endeavor, so many 10/10 scenes for different reasons
as someone who warmed up to endevor and bakugo at different points in the story you forget how much they are alike
don't think a lot of ppl got this but she actually managed to tire him out in the fight and his hands actually started to hurt something that not a lot of opponents manage to do
I love the little details of Bakugo having to brace himself with his other hand before letting off the giant explosion.

Your inner Mineta is showing
I love this show so much, so many emotions, that's why it's currently my fav, and it's my childhood anime too, watched it when I was like 9, 10, and maybe 11.
0:40 I laughed so hard at this. Kenny really loves Montana.
14:39 I wouldn’t consider suppressing your feelings healthy. She’s just putting on a brave face.
(also Tetsutetsu and Snipe are the same VA but that's not really relevant here)
I love how mha focuses on side characters. Especially this episode Ochaco Uraraka even got her own episode dueling with ANOTHER side character Bakugo
Bakugo said these hands are rated E for everyone
Character: You wouldn't hurt a girl, right? There's no reason to be brutal to someone who's weaker than you.
Bakugo: There's no reason to hold back. EVERYONE is weaker than me.
Bakugo prob just didn't want to look stupid af after losing against a girl
Minor point of order: Quirks have been around for close to 200 years by this point in the story.
This episode always hits you in the feels no matter how many times you watch 😢
I heard it so many times before, Testutestu's voice actor is the same person who plays Gajeel in Fairytail, the Iron Dragon Slayer. So him saying he needed to est more iron is hilarious to me and such a fun nod to his other character (intentional or not)
Capt. Price : mission failed we'll get em next time 0:37
As soon as you said 'we should really use these pause points' RUclips gave me an add😂
Ngl when I first watched this episode I was thinking "What if a piece of debris absolutely decapitated the shit out of one of them?"
That's what you were thinking about? 💀 Dawg I'm more confused about the fact how uraraka is durable enough to survive 5000°C nicolygene explosions 💀
@mouslimjaber-ze7sg it's anime. Everyone can tank nukes.
When Bakugo says "die" to someone he doesn't mean it literally. He kills their will to fight and make them give up. That's why Bakugo told Uraraka she wasn't dead yet.
Even if she did make him float, what would've stopped him from using his explosions to propel him in the direction he wants?
Nothing, but I feel like weight is such an important factor that he wouldn't be able to adjust his blast power enough to account for his lack of weight, causing him to fly out of bounds.
@@Dabuttermanand even if he did, how would he attack Uraraka while trying to keep himself in the ring?
@@PxndaCakesWith Howitzer Impact
He'll have a hard time controlling his quirk and moving mid air because he's weightless.
@@TheRealArcher-gn6woYes it does tf? He didn't create it on the spot for his todoroki fight
Oh yeah she’s completely tore up inside. Absolutely devastated. Some people know how to hide it well like ursraka
Nice, im glad you two are uploading two episodes a week now
I wonder if Todoroki's facial design was inspired by Zuko's? Both do sport a noticeable burnt mark on the left eye.
Most likely not
Most likely. Same with the parent relationship
Yuki Hayashi is just god tier when it comes to OSTs lol
Absolutely LOVED this ep when I watched it for the first time, can’t wait to see Montana’s reaction to it!
@@snvhill I get ya. It would definitely changed things just the way everyone was talking made it seem like she would just win.
Bakugo has always been my favorite character.
The greatest RESPECT Bakugo gave Uraraka is when she fell down and when she started crawling again he assumed a fighting stance.
"dont be gross" i love them these r my reactors
I never thought it was a sprain. I always thought of it being fractured instead just because of how big the explosions were.
What was Kenny betting 😂😂
As much as Bakugo annoys me sometimes, he doesn't underestimate his classmates, he fights to win, he respects them as people and as future heroes he thinks he will be number one but that isn't arrogance, he doesn't treat anyone different from each other, male or female, he knows his skills and he prepares for theirs. And that is something I respect about him. Even when he's talking about killing everyone. XD
I mean he wasn't doing anything wrong here isn't the point of UA tournament to win no matter what?
"Yea, lots of people have fire power too" aha aha ahaHAHAHAHAHA
Deku's genius plan - "Uraraka should use her quirk"
Nah ya don't say
And here I thought Montana was the emotional one 😂😂
Great reaction. Looking forward to two times a week. 2x8 is still actually 2x9 on RUclips. Hope someone realizes that mixup.
What do you mean by that?
cant wait to rewatch the thing i already watched but with other people watching it to
25:51 Strictly speaking it's not just the strength, size or durability differences between men and women that are responsible for the general distaste of harming a woman, there is also the fact women are seen as intrinsically valuable due to their ability to carry the next generation.
Extremely rare Bakugo W this episode 🔥
I think that even if Uraraka was able to touch Bakugou and float him, he could Just redirect himself
With his explosions and easily get to Uraraka, so, very low chances for Uraraka to Win, maybe if some of the falling Debri knocks Bakugou uncouncious if Uraraka manages to touch him and distract him
That’s not friendship like Kirishima, that’s saying he sees her as a worthy opponent.)
If you disagree, I would say this.
Always love reading your Quirk explanations. You've made me rethink Ururaka a LOT in this show.
I’ve counted 5 different unique gravity moderations in her arsenal, a different recoil, and exactly how her quirk would work to get these to be possible…and I’m not even done. i always hear everyone talk about her disadvantage but nobody ever talks about his. wtf did they want bakugou to do in this situation?
1) use explosions powerful enough to both move her and cause her body sever damage
2) let her touch him and get knocked out of the ring himself (i never understood why he couldn’t just use his explosions to aim his body but if this universe says he can’t he can’t)
3) the only strategy i can think of that he would win, letting her wear herself out so she kos herself
Ong they get mad at bakugo for not holding back against a girl even though that's the literally the whole point to win no matter what if he tried to send her off bounds by touching her she would automatically win and if he used a giant explosion to send her off bounds he could heavily injure her if not literally kill her

The show doesn't make it super clear on the first watch but that big blast Bakugo let out to win the fight? That move HURTS him. A LOT. It doesn't look it, but he had to put his body on the line to beat her.
