Likely both. Maybe too much bias from AWD and it’s taxing the front wheels too much and some suspension inadequacies, plus notes that brakes dont have bite. Something isn’t balanced/matched properly. So it sounds like it needs wider tires, especially when you’re Randy and pushing to limit, imo that’s the easiest and most likely answer.

The Audi has bad transmission programming, weak brakes (not surprising, they do brakes in-house there) and the tires are not great, not a track weapon, got it. :) All that, but most people that buy it will still enjoy the brand's prestige and the fit and finish of the interior, Audi does that better than anyone in their segment. Super glad someone can give an honest review, thanks, Randy!
@MotorTrend Channel I know this isn't supposed to be a comprehensive review, but this is really clear as mud. It's pretty well-known the carbon ceramic brakes are a waste of $6,000. And the 20" wheels aren't worth it if your plan is to track the car. Such a seasoned driver and he can't be bothered to use the paddles to shift the car manually? come on... The only comment I think we can all agree on is the fact that we would all like to see more power sent to the rear wheels in this car! You guys are selling this car on 400hp and the fact that you can rotate its tyres. That's pretty laughable...
It's a small car with a transverse engine; yes of course it's Haldex. This means it's not permanent all wheel drive like a Torsen system, like most things it's a trade off. For normal driving and crusing it is predominantly FWD meaning you don't have wasted drive train losses so better performance and fuel economy. It's a gen5 system meaning it's highly reactive and can send up to 50% power to the rear wheels giving you the best of both worlds, but don't expect a RWD drifting experience!
How do you manage to understeer a TTRS, i know it as a nasty oversteerer on turn in and after that it's front is superglued to the road, while it's back is pushing under power. It has terribly brake cooling. First few stoops are great, after that it starts rapidly fading. But Audi Sport offers an improved Kit for ist with that it anchors on Porsche Level and with Porsche endurance. I use mine as a Track car, is modified to 480hp 600nm and has a full cage and especially on difficult tracks like the Nordschleife no car is faster.
I like Randy’s honesty. These aren’t the best tires, Michelin is much better, even the Firestone Indy500 have much better reviews and the Continental Extreme Contact Sport also.
Audi puts Quattro badges on everything, but this and RS3 don't get a REAL QUATTRO like the S4 with a Torsen center diff and a torque-vectoring diff at the real. RS3 has 255 up front and 235 out back, but the TTRS has a square set-up? WTF? Hopefully APR can re-flash the quattro computer, send more torque out back and fit a wider tire up front!
Not a fan of those tires. They maybe ok for track day but unless you live in a hot dry climate I'd run something with a bit more range. Very sensitive to temp. and wet. Ran a set on a F-Type.
I never had a chance to test this tire enough in a hard performance scenario. Hot dry day acceleration seemed "ok" but I mostly stuck to the street and there aren't too many places you can pour everything into the corner without endangering others so couldn't put their lateral adhesion to the test.
I own a 100% stock 2018 TTRS and mine does not make all of those whooshing noises. Must’ve had the mic under the hood next to the intake. Also, he should’ve drove it in manual mode. Auto mode is horrific and always upshifts early even in S mode.

It's not the weight of the engine that causes the understeer, it's overloading of the front tyres. The front tyres work a lot as you're turning in and it's expected in a four-wheel drive
