Controversial Thoughts: Can an animal based diet help with depression/anxiety?

  • You bet it can!
The current paradigm of mental illness focuses on neurotransmitter derangements, but these are not the root of the problem in depression/anxiety etc., they are a manifestation of underlying inflammation and metabolic dysfunction.
Yes. These imbalances underlie almost all chronic illness, yet western medicine sadly continues to focus on symptoms rather than addressing the root cause.
What is causing the metabolic dysfunction and inflammation in many mental illnesses? Find out in this week's Controversial Thoughts video.
Note: On Rumble and podcast feeds there is a bit of extra content about schmovid I cannot post here.

I´ve had anger issues for a really long time, and I felt so calm and balanced when I was doing carnivore, I didn´t think I ever once went off the deep end. I´ve been off carnivore for a few months and have noticed my mood is more unstable when I eat grains and sugar, and now my inflammation is back. This video is a wake up call and reminder. I´m back on carnivore as of tomorrow.

Honestly when I was in a carnivore diet just because I want to have the experience I was so fucking happy I remember I used to wake at 4am with out alarm and full of energy, right now I eat other things I feel that my life have no sense and also I’m so lazy and only want to die almost every day, I started a caloric deficit and I feel better! Also less grains and only a little veggies that I like to eat and aren’t as toxic are others
I change my diet because of others opinions but now I know that I wasn’t wrong, I was happy without reasons now I’m sad every day even if its not a bad day
Let’s get back to animal base diet ❤️and feel happy

My psychiatrist prescribed me Ritalin as soon as he diagnosed me with adhd. I took it and it made my stomach feel terrible and my energy levels dropped. After finding Paul’s podcast, I started an animal based diet and cut out all the terrible foods I was eating. My mood swings are gone and I have more energy than ever. Several years ago I got in my car in the garage and started it up, I was so depressed with no reason for it.
My wife found me passed out.
A year earlier I was tested by a Chiropractor for allergies and I was told I was allergic to gluten. I didn't believe it until I almost died, I went cold Turkey away from anything containing gluten and my outlook on life improved tremendously, since than and several years later with other maladies prediabedies I started keto and now for the last year and 9 months been carnivore, at 63 I cannot express how good I feel and the mental clarity or sharpness is amazing. I wish my parents would of known this when I was a kid perhaps I wouldn't of been labeled as encouragable and the dumb kid, the repercussions carried through life.
My wife and I had worked in the mental health field she a counselor, I in transportation, diet was not an option for her because she was not a licensed dietitian. I've been living like that for many years, and it's a shock to me that I've lived most of my life like that which is why I had made decisions that increased my depression. I can now say I don't have social anxiety or depression, and when I experience some of it from lemons of life, it's much more manageable than before. I was wondering about your supplements. I've been to a Functional Dr who did lab's and said I have excessive histamines and I'm an undermethylator. I have a boatload of deficiency issue's (vit D, zinc, B's etc) and have suffered really bad full body inflammation and GI issue's causing severe nutrition deficiency since having covid in August 2020 and recently found a Functional Dr to try to help me with these issues. I've been changing my diet, primarily carnivore, so: meat, fish, eggs and cheese, cream and butter. No grains. I was wondering if your supplements are tolerated by people with these types of health issue's? It's all very new but I know I'm meant to aim for low histamine food's and I was also diagnosed hypothyroid. So I'm also doing IF 20:4. You've mentioned a few supplements and they sound as though they'd be helpful but not sure because of my current issue's. Would love to see what may work. I'm in Australia, do you ship here also? Thanks again, I love your thought provoking content!

Good on ya, mate. In Australia vegetarians & vegans are over represented per capita amongst those seeking or referred for assistance from the public mantal health service. The ex vegan forums are peppered with people observing the change in their mental state after returning to animal based foods, & also often after ditching many plant based foods, also
On a personal note, I know/ knew 5 vegan male succesful suicides, all under 40 years of age. I believe their diet had a signifcant part in their mh status & deaths. People speak of these mens' veganism as evidence that they were good people. They were already good people before they went vegan. Veganism is a significant part of why they are dead people.

Much of my immediate family have been prescribed anxiolytics for life. I have been offered the same treatment for my generalized anxiety disorder, but I have extreme hesitance to accept after learning of Dr. Peterson’s experience with benzo withdrawal.
I am a 19yr old male. I began a carnivore diet two weeks ago following 3 weeks of keto which failed to deliver any benefits to my anxiety or my idiopathic arthritis. After a week on carnivore; eating liver, muscle meat, bone broth, moderate/high fat and moderate protein - I’d begun feeling depressed, which I have not suffered from in the past, and I was extremely physically fatigued. I added back raspberries, avocado, and honey. I feel much better after 1 week of this. However, my anxiety disorder has shown little improvement, my arthritis a small but perhaps noteworthy amount. Might it be that not enough time has passed, or another cause? I do not cheat - ever - on my diet.

Additional information - I’m unsure of it’s relevance but I will include it regardless:
      I am 19, 130lb 5’5”, male.
My daily diet is as follows: eating window noon-7:00pm.
Breakfast: 12oz uncured bacon, 2tbsp honey, 2/3 cup raspberries, 30g avocado.
Dinner: 1lb 80/20 grass fed ground beef cooked in grass fed organic beef tallow, using Redmond’s real salt OR ~1-1.25 lb of a grain-fed cut of beef cooked in organic grass fed beef tallow, with 2tbsp honey, 2/3 cup raspberries, 30g avocado. Heart & soil whole package.
2x per week I will include 3oz of cooked calf liver with one of my meals.
Nature of anxiety disorder: began in early elementary school, arthritis began 8 years ago. I hear voices as a symptom of my anxiety, experience panic attacks nearly daily, and during more intense days I witness visual hallucinations. A LOT of my family suffers similarly - more than don’t - and they all eat a SAD.
I am extremely motivated to find a solution, as my mother and broths suffer similarly. Being able to improve my own quality of life and theirs is perhaps the most worthwhile goal I can pursue right now. Any information is appreciated.

For anxiety and depression you should increase fat consumption, some coconut fat can help with its mct stuff. It takes at least 2 months to see some real improvements and can take up to 2 years to completely heal serious stuff.
One thing i noticed when instartes keto dieting 2 years a go is that you need to force you body to go into fat burning state, this can be done in two ways, eating a lot of fat or fasting, you should try eating a lot of fat untill you literally start smeling acetone it may take a month or so, then you can reduce fat to a normal dosage. And as much as this can help, i felt that fasting (from 16h to 36h few times a week) is the best way of reducing depression and anxiety faster.

I agree, I feel better after a month of carnivore.
    May I ask a question?
The recommended proportion of fat is 1.5-2g of fat per 1g protein.
    It comes up, for 500g of meat (5x30g/100g = 150g protein x 1.5 = 225) at 225g - 300g of fat.
Thus amount of fat is enormous and, following also OMAD, gives me a light sense of nausea.
Isn't it a bit against the natural proportions, eating so much fat to protein?

Though I think your theory/hypothesis has relevance to some people - a select minority - I don't think it applies to the vast majority. Depression is more social and economic and even spiritual than it is rooted in any pathophysiological biological process. I think their are genetic sensitivities but those sensitivities are not so much triggered by what people eat but by how people think about their lives the world at large and their perception of what is or isn't possible for them - relationships both past and present also factor significantly. Meaningful authentic self expression or lack thereof also plays a large part in mental health, lack of intimacy and human connection too. These problems are much more complex than dietary factors so I think many people create a narrative surrounding diet because it gives one a manageable point of intervention. It is also empowering however may also serve as a distraction from other factors influencing mental health.

How do you test for inflammation in the CNS?

  • @wjftj
    @wjftj 3 года назад +1

Nowadays, people are just simply not eating enough calories to provide energy for the brain to work since they are afraid of gaining weight and therefore, most develop depression/anxiety. Any kind of diet that provides enough energy to the brain will improve symptoms of depression/anxiety. Carnivore diet is one way to provide enough energy to the brain without the fear of gaining weight.

I wonder if a psychiatrist could actually treat major depressive disorder with an animal based diet instead of SSRIs. To reduce the inflammation and the insulin resistance and the metabolic disorder at the root of the problem, instead of manipulating serotonin re-uptake. Would you lose your medical license that way, or would you cure your patients?

high carbs and glucose cause inflammation; high fat, moderate protein and low carbs diet with IF prevent inflammation. I would not subscribe to Carnivore or to Herbivore diets cuz they are extreme forms which deprive the body of essential nutrients found in animal meat and low carbs veggies. Dr. Saladino himself remarked that he's omnivore carnivore by which he suggests his diet is not carnivore (all animal diet) but keto.

There has never been a single documented case of anyone getting Vit A toxicity from eating liver. There have been many cases from people overdoing the supplements however. So, this toxicity is a real thing just not from eating normal dietary amounts of liver.
