Not really Doo-Wop, but it has it's roots there, and in the blues. The singer that influenced Smokey most, by his own admission, is Nolan Strong, lead singer of a Doo-Wop group called The Diablos, so the influence is there. If you listen some really early Smokey, songs like Bad Girl, Got a Job, even Shop Around, you can hear the Doo-Wop influence. But, as time went on and Motown evolved and tastes evolved, so did Smokey's sound. It's STILL evolving!
The song actually features a traditional element of black gospel music "call and response" Its the repeat of the lead line. Also the woman in the song is Smokey's first wife. She was an original member of The Miracles. Smokey was a hell of a song writer he wrote many songs for other Motown artist. He wrote the big Temptations hit My Girl, He also wrote Mary Wells (the First Lady of Motown) My Guy, You beat me to the Punch, Two Lovers, and What Love Has Joined Together. Smokey was called the Poet Laureate of Love by the great poet Amiri Baraka.
@@kevinstarr516 No it wasnt With the Beatles was thier second USA release it was never released in the UK Their first UK album was Please Please Me and included "You really got a hold on me" I know cos I bought the Please Please me album.
White Hart You don’t know Jack. I have all of their albums - US and UK releases. Here is Please Please Me... www.thebeatles.com/album/please-please-me And here is With The Beatles... www.thebeatles.com/album/beatles And this is from The Beatles official website.
@@denisbriggs2992 The first US Beatles release was "Meet The Beatles". The second US release was "The Beatles Second Album". "You Really Got A Hold On Me" was the 3rd song on side A of "The Beatles Second Album" in the US, and the 3rd song on side B of "With The Beatles" in the UK. The Beatles recorded the song on July 18, 1963.
There is elements of blues in this but it would be considered motown...doo-wop is more like Dion and the Belmonts or Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
No, Doo Wop was popularized by Black Singing Groups like The Coasters, Drifters, Platters, Ink Spots amongst others who made their Bones singing in Bathrooms, Dances or Streetcorners. This Song was actually inspired by Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me".
LOL I know doo wop music from my parents when I was a kid. But then I was like yeah, how DO you describe what it is to someone who doesn't know? 🤔😁 Ya girl got it, it is a certain sound...and also I think there were some songs that like literally had singers saying "doo wop" or similar in them. 😄 Anyway love your reactions! 👍✌
I always think of Simon & Garfunkel whenever I hear the name Smokey Robinson, I think it's just because of their song Mrs Robinson, Smokey Robinson/Mrs Robinson
The sweetest voice of the rock and roll era. Try a young Smokey doing the live version of "Ooh Baby, Baby" here for more of that sweet voice: ruclips.net/video/nwwsT2Hh1AQ/видео.html. Funny how some people can only compare this to that second rate Beatles version of this great cut.
There is nothing simple, light, or sweet about the music or the lyrics - except superficially. I think Berry Gordy wanted to sell records to everyone, both the superficial and the deep. No? The lyric is full of triple-entendres. The word _tighter_ - wait for it - it will come unexpectedly. Comes on an upbeat. Song is about conflict, obsession, compulsion. And the narrator is into it - deep. It is not at all "light" except superficially. Tighter. Hold me - tighter. With your arms? Your legs? He doesn't have use Cardi B's slang term for it, for me to figure out what else he might like to be held by, and that he's been obsessing about - and why he is conflicted about escaping this "hold." It's not a hold on his checking account that he's talking about. What it is? What it is. In 1962, might have been "hard" to say? Could be soft yesterday, hard today. This song has _profondeur._ Notice he says "hold me" four times. "All I want you to do is... "hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me." Arms, legs, genitals, you? Tighter.
Smokey's voice, man. It's unfortunate that we seem to have lost music with great singer's like him and Sam Cooke.
This was THE MIRACLES’ SECOND MILLION SELLER( after “Shop Around”)
featuring Miracles
SMOKEY ROBINSON and
BOBBY ROGERS on lead vocals

Ooh Baby Baby. Your link took me back to 9th grade.
I love Hard Rock/Metal but I think 50's/60's had the best music, everyone can enjoy music from those 2 decades
Love this reaction! I’ve been looking for reactions on “oldies” ❤️ need to try some Brenton Wood
Yep love the Beatles version, John sings it 👍
I wouldn't consider it doo wop and I don't think Smokey would either. It's rhythm and blues, soul.
I never knew he covered The Beatles. This was nice.
This is the original that the beatles covered
😂
new here great ch
1960 I think
Sorry for all the repeats you tube went crazy on me :(

Why not the woman or man that's in the passenger seat?? Hello..

So Much in Love by the Tymes is a good example of doo-wop.
