Yeah he does sit pretty high and he is a small guy as well. I did sat right behind him last year for a Protocol show. And filmed some stuff right behind him - and several clips is featured on my channel. That was really special to be so close. It was so powerful yet so dynamic. Simply amazing.
Saw him in the mid-80s at a Tama Drum Clinic what's the best drum Clinic I've ever seen and I've seen Billy Cobham Lenny white Steve Smith and Terry Bozzio drum clinics
Those sideways head tilts remind me of Gregg Bissonette during the Buddy Rich Memorial concert. I wonder if they both got them from the same inspiration...
Hmm. Could it be a 22’Rock Ride?on his left? I am not sure. On his right though is a 22 Brilliant Earth Ride. Had one but sold it. Would love to get it back.
Interesting how high he sits - not seen him from behind the kit before. Fabulous talent. Thanks +++

Phenomenal ! ... Absolutely love it ... Totally unique Tama fibreglass kit that Simon used back then .
Me too!!! Love that period from Simon...
Kind of the inspiration for power toms even though this kit wasn't actually Tama power sizes . They didn't even make deep toms at this time.
I saw him in 1979 in Denmark at the Roskilde festival. With Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer and Stanley Clarke. It blew my mind.
Wow!! Amazing that must have been.
@ It was! 👍
I saw Jeff in concert on campus at SIU in 1980. Simon was on drums. Awesome show!!👍🎸🥁😎
Fantastic!!
More gold! thanx brother!
Yes he really was on fire here. 🔥
23 yr. old Simon giving his best to the percussive arts.
Oh yes indeed he does.
Wonderful!!!
In 1976 Simon played on "801 Live". His drumming on "East Of Asteroids" is amazing!!!
@@lucafrancescoabatangelo3348 Yes. That is a killer one in 13/8 if I rememeber correctly.
@@sturla75 Absolutely! And he was so young 😅
Would recognize him instantly already back then.
Exactly!! Very identifiable way of playing even back then.
Simon on his prime, this is the ancient Castronovo!
Tremendo sólo🥁

Da merkt man aber schon sehr stark die Einflüsse von Billy Cobham auf Simon, was er selbst auch schon in einem Interview erwähnt hat...
Yeah you can clearly hear the Billy influence here.
Simon Phillips Billy Cobham moment.....
Oh yes!!
Didn't know Sir Simon was a member of Dexis Midnight Runners....
😂😂
What kind of ride is that on the left? I think I just acquired one. Has a bigger bell than other Zildjians I've seen from that era.

@@sturla75 still got my 22 earth based on a clinic I saw Simon play in manchester uk in circa 83-4 - cuts through anything !!
