Jeremy's face when you said the bus was made in 2020 was absolutely priceless! That big thing sticking out of the NY Waterway terminal at 1:20 is a ventilation shaft for the Lincoln Tunnel! Different from the Holland Tunnel's ventilation shafts since the Holland Tunnel ones were built at the ends of long piers! The John J. Harvey fireboat was launched in 1931 and it's one of the most powerful fireboats ever built, capable of pumping up to 18,000 gallons of water a minute, roughly the equivalent of 20 terrestrial fire trucks! On September 11 2001, the John J. Harvey was recalled to service by the FDNY and reactivated as Marine Company 2. On that day, alongside the FDNY fireboats Fire Fighter and John D. McKean, she pumped water for 80 hours until water mains in Lower Manhattan were restored to service!
The Hoboken Terminal clock tower isn't from 2004, it's from 2007! But yes, it's a modern installation, which says a lot of how well of a job they did replicating the original when it continues to fool transit buffs like you! The original clock tower opened with the terminal in 1907, but in 1942, it was removed to use the copper for the war effort, was replaced by a radio tower, and then the radio tower was finally removed in 2006 so they could reconstruct the clock tower for the terminal's centennial in 2007! Hoboken Terminal is one of my favorite stations because of the clock tower, the multiple transit modes that meet there, the movies filmed there like Julie & Julia and Muppets Take Manhattan (when Kermit said goodbye to Miss Piggy while she was on the train), and its rich history like one of the first installations of central air-conditioning in a public space was at the station and the first non-experimental use of mobile phones.
Ah yes, Frank Sinatra, New York's biggest fan....born in New Jersey. If you want to visit Frank Sinatra's childhood address of 415 Monroe Street in Hoboken, it's walking distance from the 2nd Street HBLR station! The Frying Pan was launched in 1929 as a lightship (one of the only American lightships left) and was stationed at the Frying Pan Shoals off the coast of Cape Fear in North Carolina between 1930 to 1942, and again from 1945 to 1964. It was brought to NYC in the late 1980s! The Art Deco building at Pier 57 on the other hand was designed by Emil Praeger who also worked on the former Arecibo Telescope in Puerto Rico, Shea Stadium, the original Tappan Zee Bridge from 1955, and the 1962 Dodger Stadium.
The IKEA meatball story nobody asked for: When IKEA opened their first in-store cafe in Älmhult, Sweden in 1953, it didn't have meatballs. Just coffee and cake. That menu changed a bit by adding Swedish dishes like potato mash and sausage as they grew. But no meatballs. Company founder Ingvar Kamprad, who started IKEA as a mail-order company (IKEA's name comes from his initials and the farm and village where he grew up in Sweden), was not happy with the quality and image of the cafes, and thought they were a mess. Sören Hullberg, who led the revamp of the in-store restaurant, came up with a solution with him that would simplify operations, keep costs down, and be able to serve 5K customers a day. They also looked for a dish that was popular throughout the world than just Sweden. And meatballs fit the bill. Efficient to freeze, transport, prepare, and many love them. They were added to the IKEA menu in 1985 and the rest is history.
I’ve recently experienced IKEA here in Manchester U.K. and I like their concept - we had MFI and also Chlas Olsen, another Nordic company - other Nordic companies also include Stena Line Ferries around Northern Europe

It’s nice the Brooklyn IKEA is finally getting its own transit review.
This is also just a fun fact but last year a new Ikea opened in downtown Copenhagen, and this year a brand new intercity bus terminal will open next to it. But of course in danish fashion it is very spartan with only a small-ish roof, narrow platforms, and a small indoor building with a few seats, toilets, and a single 7eleven. But again its right next to the Ikea so the planners say "If people want lunch they can just walk across the street and enjoy Swedish meatballs there".
Also like Lingonberry jam and pork tgoether is like really nice. Like Danish and Swedish cuisine is kinda similar and boy you sometimes just want roast pork with boiled potatoes, gravy, and lingonberry jam.
Miles at an IKEA, hmm let's see how many Eurovision Sweden references I can fit...I see everything's going your way when you're walking in your golden shoes! Transit is stuck on you like a tattoo! Miles finally faced his Waterloo, he was defeated, the Blåhaj won the war! But Miles and Jeremy remain the heroes of our time! Okay I'll stop 😂. That Boston PCC is in Red Hook because urban explorer Bob Diamond dreamed of reviving the Red Hook trolley line that ran to Atlantic Terminal and Downtown Brooklyn. Diamond was the one who discovered the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel, believed to the world’s first underground transit tunnel. The NYCDOT supported the project, new tracks were built by the waterfront, PCCs acquired, but then the DOT withdrew and ordered most tracks removed. Trolleys were once such a part of the Brooklyn scene that the local baseball club was named the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, which of course was shortened to the Brooklyn Dodgers! Brooklyn once having a streetcar system is even referenced in Pokémon Black/White in Nacrene City
It's nice when big-box stores like IKEA and Costco open in more urban locations! St Louis has an IKEA by Cortex station on MetroLink! Costco has a Vancouver location next to Stadium-Chinatown station on the SkyTrain as part of a residential tower complex! IKEA has taken a sustainable approach as well in Vienna! While people initially opposed the Red Hook IKEA because IKEA destroyed a dry dock and Red Hook heritage, it ended up being a good thing because it helped the local economy by bringing jobs and customers/attraction to the area, on top of the ferry! It's great to see big-box stores like these two evolve to have an urban mindset. Because as more people become environmentally aware, on top of those who either can't afford a car or can't physically or mentally drive one, building dense transit-oriented development is an absolute must as we move forward and solve society's biggest problems.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that the diner at 1:03 is the sister of the Tick Tock Diner out in Clifton, NJ! Not sure when the Manhattan one opened, but I think it's interesting that it's incorporated into the hotel's lobby.
I think it's a bit of a shame that the Ikea ferry only runs on weekends. I remember I tried taking it on a weekday with a friend of mine very late last year, only to find out it wasn't running... so we went to Governor's Island instead. Close enough, I guess.
Also, a bit of oversharing on my behalf, but it's kinda surreal in a funny way for me to see you guys pulling out of Pier 11 on the ferry, because I was just there earlier today with a couple of my friends, taking the Rockaway ferry out to Fort Tilden. Like, I got a tiny bit of deja vu from that shot!
I love how it went from a ferry review to an IKEA products review. Can't believe there's an IKEA in NY with free public transport access while the only way to get to the majority of their european counterparts is only by car. Good job IKEA Brooklyn! And thanks Miles for this fantastic review!

In many places in Europe IKEA is accessible by public transport. In Spain most, if not all, are easily accessible, by buses and/or by metro/rail/tram and in Places that aren't they also provide, in many cases, free shuttle (like IKEA in Toulouse, for example). There are also many IKEA URNAB and pick up points in very central locations.

Many citys in many country's in europe and asia have free Ikea buses , but a ferry was a new one for me as a Swede=)
Smart concept free ride to the store and cheap food to keep u in there all day and do your shopping, That's one of the things that make Ikea is so big all over the world and kind of genius
@@gmm5550Yes, it exist in many other places around the world but the comment was about Europe. I assume that IKEA's policy worldwide is to make sure there is a way to get to their stores without a car, when possible.

I used to work at an IKEA with the collecting of trolleys.. It was intense but fun, driving around the parking lot in my little tractor with a trailer that i filled up and deposited in the machine that you saw.

As a native English speaker now in Sweden, I'd probably describe 'ö' more like a shorter, rounder 'uh.' I thought his pronunciation wasn't that far off. I'm not aware of 'öu' existing in any Swedish words, but my vocabulary is still limited.

I pass by 34th Street and 7th Avenue all of the time on my way to Penn Station. And I’ve lived in NYC all of my life. I’ve heard of the Staten Island Ferry, NYC Ferry, Circle Line, and Hornblower. I’ve never heard of the IKEA ferry.

...oh - and when I used to take the NJ 23 Bus to Hoboken (to then jump on the PATH or Ferry to Lower Manhattan) I got great photos of the installation of the "clock tower" replica (at Hoboken station. Also was around there after the unfortunate train crash that ultimately lead to vast renovations and improvements within Hoboken train station.
Had no idea that high floor transit buses are still made outside of school buses lol
I didn’t either until the public bus company in my town bought one for some reason lmao.
Back before IKEA was in Brooklyn the closest one was next to Newark Airport, and they ran free coach bus service from the Port Authority on weekends. It was VERY popular, and usually there were long lines for the bus back to the city.
The Brooklyn IKEA actually has two subway shuttle busses, but these were mini-buses the last time I went there about 5 years ago (and the streets of Red Hook can be a rough ride on a mini-bus). One runs to Borough Hall 2/3/4/5/R but the shuttle stop is by the 4/5 entrance (and it’s a really LONG way to IKEA on a mini-bus) or to both Smith & 9th Street F and 4th Avenue F/R (and D/N when the express tracks are out of service).
I took that shuttle bus a couple of times.
Always like more ferries! Next time you're in Toronto, try both the island ferries (long run across the harbour to parkland) and the Billy Bishop Airport ferry (extremely short, just crossing a shipping channel).
Is that the same airport you can walk to, via a pedestrian tunnel under the lake?
Yeah, last time I flew into Billy Bishop I tried to take the ferry but it wasn't running. I also went in, like, 2014 back when the ferry was required to get across, which was really fun!
I hope the Billy Bishop Airport ferry still runs. I remember(back when I was there in 2012) you still had to take the ferry at that time, and I heard talk a pedestrian tunnel was being constructed. Interesting if the ferry still runs to this day, despite that new tunnel.
@@BoratWanksta It does still run, but rarely for passengers; it's mostly used for supply purposes. But if they're sailing it soon anyway, I imagine you can ask to ride it.
I got on the Ikea ferry last saturday because of you. Because of YOU! Anyway it was awesome, I had a super fun day and I got 3 videos out of it. I even walked into that abandoned boston street car that I didn't know existed until your video. Also, I spent all summer riding the nyc ferry last year but this ferry had some of the better views and it was free. I feel bad I put it off for so long.

I used to work at ikea and we only gave out the flags when people asked for more than 8 meatballs. these are so the cashiers know how many are on a plate
no flag = 8
one flag = 12
two flags = 16
etc. there are also special flags for the plant based ones
(this was in europe so not entirely sure it works the same way in the us, but I assume so)

never had 16 meatballs so i can attest only for the first two

Oh yeah. Before I moved to NJ, I went to that ikea looking for stuff for my apartment and when I was there I saw the notices for the ferry and shuttle buses to come on the weekends and it makes sense. There’s no room in NYC for ikea except for that one. They need to attract a clientele from around the city.

Love this quick video. I work in Manhattan (live in NJ) and never realized there was an IKEA in Brooklyn! Looks like a great adventure (since I love and used to take) the NY Waterway (from Hoboken) to work some times.
If you have covered this, please disregard, but my new addiction, having my car be inoperative for a while now, is taking NJ Transit (111 Bus) from PABT to Mills at Jersey Gardens (Mall) and to IKEA. Love to hit up the LEGO store in the mall (for pick-a-brick wall time). Round trip is only $14 bucks. I usually take it to the mall first and then walk the mile or so to IKEA (since I don't know how reliable the connections are from the mall to IKEA) on the same bus line.
Then I usually get the 1:06 pm from IKEA (first stop) heading back to Manhattan. That way you can score a seat before it heads back to the Mall and then to a few stops (in Union City, NJ) right before hitting the helix, back into the Lincoln Tunnel.

@@counterfit5 nope, did the entire thing on the bike. it was presidents day Sunday so car traffic was not too bad on most roads, though the store was pretty busy.
There's a spoof soap opera called IKEA Heights available on RUclips. It was filmed covertly without authorization in a Burbank, CA IKEA store in 2009 and starred, among others, Randall Park and Whitney Avalon.

I love this bus vehicle, which is an odd mongrel of a coach bus and a vintage school bus
Honestly it's better than being a straight up school bus....when the LIRR was doing work extending the siding at Patchogue, there were no Montauk Branch trains between Babylon and Montauk, so they were forced to bring out school buses from Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. (NICE offered some buses as well) since that was pretty much the only option.
I rode this once but it was an hour and a half late because myself and the other passengers had to manually assemble it really quick beforehand
Of course we love Ferries! They sail around super cool and beautiful cities and dock in amazing places, and the views along the cruise are always wonderful. My favorite was during my time living in San Francisco's SOMA neighborhood, I'd take the Ferry from SF to Tiburon. The views of the Golden Gate from the water were fantastic! Keep these up!
Great video. Nywy Ferry shuttle buses also connect nyc Ferry's St. George at same terminal at West 38 St. Do Midtown-BPC-St. George Ferry next.
Also do free fare bus routes on B60, Bx18A/B, M116, Q4/Q4 LTD and S46/S96 buses next.

The Irish Ferries Ulysses Cruise Ferry across the Irish Sea from Holyhead in Wales to Dublin Ireland takes 3 hours 15 mins and has a service speed of 22 knots - I live in Manchester U.K. 22 years and have extended family in Ireland, but I prefer “SailRail” (train and ferry) when going home to Ireland rather than flying, as it’s a far more civilised way to travel

You need to ride the SeaBus in Vancouver. It's not free, and you can't go outside, but you can take a train to get to it, and it comes every 10 minutes during rush hour.

Miles! Do a video riding the Alaska Marine Highway System!!! I rode it twice in college to get from WA to Anchorage - but I didn't have any money for a cabin so had to pitch a tent on the top deck! It was one of those miserable but totally worth it experiences! You could do a short 2 day trip from WA to Juneau or make it a week long adventure and travel as far east as the Aleutian Islands - do it do it do it!!!
Someday! It's expensive and takes forever, which are the two barriers, but I really do want to do it someday!

Given that IC's discontinued the RE school/transit bus who knows what the NY Waterway will choose for a future bus. Not surprised they decided to refresh their fleet before the discontinuation because IC's out of the Type D game, at least for now.

WSF is awesome, because it connects so many different types of communities. And because they run basically around the clock, it would be possible to do a WSF speedrun video.

There is, in fact, a landscaped walkway around the side of the building. This is presumably because the docks are part of a park behind the store, and the park is separate from the store. So you do not have to walk through the weird covered parking area if you don’t want to. (I assume the reason for the covered parking is that Red Hook is in a hurricane flood zone, so the store may have been required to be up on stilts, or maybe IKEA just didn’t want their merchandise getting flooded.)
It must take longer, right? Everyone just bee-lined across the parking lot!
@@MilesinTransit it’s pretty obvious if you look at the aerial map view. I’m not sure why it wasn’t as obvious on the ground. (I’ve never taken the IKEA ferry, but I’ve walked around the back of the store a bunch of times.)

I once carried two nightands (one in each big blue ikea bag) from the ferry up to my old apartment on 76 and 2nd via the 4 and 6 (before the Q went up there). Was a schlep, but still have the nightstands!
They don't serve beef meatballs everywhere, only vegan and pork but definitely try it with cranberry sauce next time.

over the summer i lived in nj and took a ny waterways to commute everyday and had to take those busses. they have a live tracker on their awful app but it’s always an experience trying to catch one

Hey, I use the wheelchair and I use the bus. It is a pain, but it serves a purpose.
It absolutely serves a purpose, I was more suggesting how inaccessible it is that they're still using high-floor buses in 2024 - it's so much easier for folks in wheelchairs to board low-floor vehicles.
