Seeing the British regulars coming like that must have been one intimidating site. The repercussions in history of this first engagement and what was born out of the "Shot heard around the world" is sometimes hard to wrap your head around. The history of the world was change in an instant.
I'll be watching this again in two days. I'll be showing this to my parents. This is one of my favorite tv movies. I had a two family members who met on this day. One with the 43rd regiment of foot and with the minutemen. Both would survive the war.
The most memorable thing about this movie, is Rip Torn's great line "Friend - there ain't a road in Massachusetts today that don't lead to British graves", though his quip about an occupying army we don't need to save us from enemies we don't have is a good one too.
I saw this when it first aired. I was impressed with the film maker's decision to let us hear the full arrival of the Regulars. It's like Spielberg's dark shark theme. It's (they're) coming.
This is why my ex-wife hated to watch a movie with me. The foliage looks to be Mid-Summer. In April, trees in the area would just be flowering and just budding.
From a British point of view, I can agree we were in the wrong that day, our men disobeyed orders and attacked the minutemen over a shot that neither side knew who it was
also marching all night into early morning meaning regulars got orders at midnight assembled at boston common then marched up from boston through charlestown somerville cambridge arlington to lexington which is about 10-14 miles this after the regulars had been harassed for able 6 -10years in between events I can see has Americans why they where edgy most had never been out of Boston and even less passed cambridge also they where most likely told it would be a short go into concord take when needed to be taken but that the villages and towns at that point say the regulars more of a nouces or force I can see why they got angry and fired remember this is after powder sqaure event boston tea party boston massacre and a afew other events the average regular was on their last nerve having to march basically in enemy territory I don't really blame them order was obviously broken but I think it was unavoidable whether that exact date or later the political position and military position was established
It was a sad part of the history. The Magna Carta has given British citizens more rights and freedom than any other countries in the world. The US Declaration and Constitution are both rooted from Magna Carta. George III was a pretty good King, unfortunately, he has to be responsible for the tragedy. As a small country, UK made more contributions to the world civilization last 500 years. The fight between US and UK during US revolution was like a terrible fight between son and father.
The house of Hanover produced no good kings. The only reasoning for their ascendency to the throne was by marriage and by being Protestant. George III was a naive, stubborn fool who in late life became a madman. The Whigs of British Parliament sympathized deeply with the cause of the American colonists. With a different king with a more sound mind, he'd of seen the reality of the social climate and simply adapted to the times. The people that settled on the American continent did so in part to get away from the harsh old world order. A continued policy of autonomy and self-representation would have continued the American colonies produce great trade and money for the empire. Not all Americans favored war.
Yeh Franklin talked about this "what if" in his autobiography... it's said there were only 3% of the population joined the war and fought for independence. (but with more supporters behind them I guess?)@@DarkFilmDirector
A surprisingly fair showing of the British. As with the War of 1812, the British thought the war quite unnecessary when diplomacy could still have prevailed. Not that it's done America much good to end up with presidents like Trump and Biden ! God bless America, despite the greed and madness you are a great nation and I for one wish you the very best of British luck !
One more thing, the Continental Army fought just like the British. They used smoothbore muskets just like the British. The British knew about forest fighting just as the americans. They learned it in the French and Indian war.
Another thing, it was Not the ordinary militia that won the Revolutionary War or private citizens. It was the Continental Army , the militia more often then not turned and ran. The Continental Army served for years and were battle tested soldiers. The Militia served as long as they wanted to and there was a local need.

Even though the British soldier was far more disciplined; he was still scared and nervous as anyone would be in that situation.

Not collectively, it depended on whether or not their commanders served on the frontier during the Seven Years War.
