tableshaper I think the wood was quite stable moisture wise anyway and by applying the finish, it should help to keep it from cupping. I guess time will tell though :)

Watch this made me remember my great great grandad. He built and made stuff all the time. "Why buy it made when you can make it with love?" My mom told me about the day he built the shop in the back yard because his wife was tired of all the noise and dust. He was a cool man! So are you! The table looks beautiful!!

An EXCELLENT performance ! The part I find most pleasing - rewarding, actually - is the contribution of the entire family: it does cement the whole thing together. Good 'old' daddy is doing things that all can enjoy. Having the girl create the cosmetic plugs, is a mastertouch. WELL DONE I say, old bean !

Frank, me being a grandfather, I don't thank you will ever want to replace those drawings with another table top. It's memories created by ,little people, who are big people now, who we wish were little again. Mine are gone now, building their own life and families. I still can see those memories on table tops all over the house. What beautiful memories of time passed. Thanks for sharing your talents and experience.
Great video and commentary as usual. I was very interested in your remarks about remaking the table in a fine hardwood after the kids are moved out. Good luck, I did something like that completely forgetting about grand children and ended up with the new table looking even more distressed than the original, but of course it was all worth it. I really liked your use of plain bolts and nuts as a means of attachment in the leg assemblies, you have proven your competence in constructing complex joints many times. This straight forward and practical approach is refreshing.
There is a device which fits onto the spindle and will follow a shape and provides a digital output. This project is so good in so many respects. Mr Howarth, you appear to out do yourself on each project. They are never boring and always different. Above all, you inspire me to be a better wood worker. Thanks and cheers, David.

I don't know what software you're using, but vCarvePro has a v-inlay that would make those plugs easier. You don't have to worry about how tight your offsets are and it lets you get tighter lines than than the radius of your straight bits.
bryce86777 I think maybe he lost the coordinates to where each feature was located as well, so it would have been hard to line them up without making them substantially over sized...granted with a top down photo of the top he could have done an overlay in fusion 360 and re traced the cutouts...or done a pencil tracing of each feature, scanned them, and dropped them into fusion, or just cut the new plugs on the bandsaw using said templates...either way, the project would have been far from scrapped! Lol

I thought the same thing. I've been in his shoes with work projects, losing autocad files. I think the worst is when you upgrade autocad and forget to reset auto save to 5 minutes or less. I've lost hours of work before, it's painful.
My idea would have been to use scaled-up versions of the same images, recreated from the original paper cutouts. For example, if he made the new car 10% larger than the original, then he could have re-mortised the hole 10% larger, then re-made the filler pieces 10% larger.
I think the problem was that he'd scaled and warped the shapes to fit the sizes he needed, so even re-cutting the shaped would have lead to imperfect fits
loving the build in support for the thinner edge and removing weight from the middle, also elegant solution for allowing people to sit at the ends of the table.
Great to see such a personal project re-using the material and to be used at the heart of the home. Great channel with a wood workshop that most guys would like to aspire to. 👍

The blue stuff you used to blacken the bolts is, if I recall correctly, normally used to weather the pieces so they look older than they really are (when people restore things or in prop-build e.g.). Loved what you did with the cats and cars!

I always loved working on things with my dad, but he passed away when I was 11 and I feel like I missed out on making things with him. The creativity of the various shots is incredible. I've seen this video once already but, coming back I'm really impressed by the camera work. Setting up shot and counter shot of the wood going into the tool. It's a level of artistry on top of the woodworking.

I have done the same thing, I've built "prototypes" for the exact same reasons, kids, pets, play-dough, hot glue, paint, etc., and have slowly started replacing those pieces with the real ones now that the kids are older and the messy kid projects have diminished. It's a good idea, it let's you do things a tad different the second time around, things you wish you had done the first time. Love the videos. Can't wait to see the next project. Take care. B.
Man, when that thing gets all filled colors and glue and scratches the kids did, you will never get rid of it. That table already has a story, in a decade, it will have a history. My dad made something like this and has it to this day, its not the prettiest but it has family stories written all over it.

I was raised by my grandparents and they had this solid oak table. Typical 70's table but it was thick and well built. Everyone used to gather around that table for games, crafts, hair styling and late night gossip sessions. It wasn't that great looking of a table but it meant alot to us and unfortunately it got sold when my grandpa died and my grandma moved away. So please know that even if the table isn't in the ideal wood, the fact that you made it and had your kids design the cute cut outs, it will mean something to them later on in life. I miss my grandma's table and greatly regret letting it go. I did however manage to keep a chair that went with the table and I am glad I did.
That table is the bees knees, well done. Happy wife happy life. Would be pretty awesome to see a time management video showing how much time the cnc machine actually saves a woodworker vs them actually cutting the specific pieces themselves. Some discussion or formula based things to consider could be programming, set up, error ratio, potential Jig requirement, CNC equipment cost & maintenance vs comparable non automated equipment & maintenance.
I'm not sure that it really saves a lot of time especially on one off things. there's so much set up time and testing to make sure things are gonna go right. it's more that you can do things that would be very difficult any other way

If you didn’t find your files you could have used epoxy to fill the cutouts. It wouldn’t have been your original idea but it would have worked.

Man, when that thing gets all filled colors and glue and scratches the kids did, you will never get rid of it. That table already has a story, in a decade, it will have a history. My dad made something like this and has it to this day, its not the prettiest but it has family stories written all over it.

I was raised by my grandparents and they had this solid oak table. Typical 70's table but it was thick and well built. Everyone used to gather around that table for games, crafts, hair styling and late night gossip sessions. It wasn't that great looking of a table but it meant alot to us and unfortunately it got sold when my grandpa died and my grandma moved away. So please know that even if the table isn't in the ideal wood, the fact that you made it and had your kids design the cute cut outs, it will mean something to them later on in life. I miss my grandma's table and greatly regret letting it go. I did however manage to keep a chair that went with the table and I am glad I did.

That table is the bees knees, well done. Happy wife happy life. Would be pretty awesome to see a time management video showing how much time the cnc machine actually saves a woodworker vs them actually cutting the specific pieces themselves. Some discussion or formula based things to consider could be programming, set up, error ratio, potential Jig requirement, CNC equipment cost & maintenance vs comparable non automated equipment & maintenance.
I'm not sure that it really saves a lot of time especially on one off things. there's so much set up time and testing to make sure things are gonna go right. it's more that you can do things that would be very difficult any other way
