tableshaper I think the wood was quite stable moisture wise anyway and by applying the finish, it should help to keep it from cupping. I guess time will tell though :)
I can't believe how big the kids are since we first saw them in earlier videos. Am sure Frank and Ms hope it won't take 20 years to get them out on their own!!
Quite a few great ideas in this piece Frank. The biggest ''Aha!' for me is the additional leg room for those seated at the ends, which on a typical trestle style table is problematic. Great example of design, execution and videography all in one package.
Watch this made me remember my great great grandad. He built and made stuff all the time. "Why buy it made when you can make it with love?" My mom told me about the day he built the shop in the back yard because his wife was tired of all the noise and dust. He was a cool man! So are you! The table looks beautiful!!
You never disappoint. What a talent. The 'Boss" lady must've been very pleased. It's nice to see your family. Thank you for bringing us into your home. Its lovely
Pavel Sadowsky He spent a lot of time and used tools most people don't own to make a 2x4 piece of wood. Which you can buy at a home store for a couple dollars.
An EXCELLENT performance ! The part I find most pleasing - rewarding, actually - is the contribution of the entire family: it does cement the whole thing together. Good 'old' daddy is doing things that all can enjoy. Having the girl create the cosmetic plugs, is a mastertouch. WELL DONE I say, old bean !
This is the onely 20+ minute video I watched that is'nt made by This Old Tony. The way you narrate and break it down makes it very interesting. Love your work.
Love it, Frank! Especially the puzzle designed leg joints and more so the cars and cats. Don't know many dads that would have even thought to do that let alone do it. It shows you're a good father.
Amazing. Thanks for always making these videos. You could just quietly make things in your shop, but you go to the trouble of sharing in an enjoyable format. You make all of us better through this work. Thanks!
Frank, me being a grandfather, I don't thank you will ever want to replace those drawings with another table top. It's memories created by ,little people, who are big people now, who we wish were little again. Mine are gone now, building their own life and families. I still can see those memories on table tops all over the house. What beautiful memories of time passed. Thanks for sharing your talents and experience.
Great video and commentary as usual. I was very interested in your remarks about remaking the table in a fine hardwood after the kids are moved out. Good luck, I did something like that completely forgetting about grand children and ended up with the new table looking even more distressed than the original, but of course it was all worth it. I really liked your use of plain bolts and nuts as a means of attachment in the leg assemblies, you have proven your competence in constructing complex joints many times. This straight forward and practical approach is refreshing.
There is a device which fits onto the spindle and will follow a shape and provides a digital output. This project is so good in so many respects. Mr Howarth, you appear to out do yourself on each project. They are never boring and always different. Above all, you inspire me to be a better wood worker. Thanks and cheers, David.
Frank I've been watching your videos for years now. It's actually really cool to see your kids grow up before my very eyes since I started watching you.
You're videos are the freaking best. Everything about them makes me so happy. 1st, the amazing content and video quality and editing omg I just love it, and the stop motion clips are so great :) 2nd, you look to be just about the happiest man while tinkering in your shop and it just warms my heart; 3rd, your voice is so soothing and nice it's just perfect. Thank you for helping me feel better in the tough times and better in the not so tough times
Awesome project frank. Have been watching your videos for quite a few years but don't think I've ever commented for some reason :) Great work as always and particularly like the design of this table. Both with the look of it and also the mechanical/engineerie parts :) very cool sir
I really love this project Frank. Having the kids create the designs for the plugs is absolutely brilliant and I would have never thought to remove all that bulk from the bottom to lighten up the top. Co cool.
Don’t kid yourself, Frank - you are never going to make a ‘nice hardwood version’ of this table, because when your chicks have flown the coop there will have so much memories and history with this one, that you will keep onto it till the end of times. : ) Love the video!
Your videos are better than the movies out today. Well told and left to surprise at every turn. You are a giant inspiration to me and probably to everyone! I just want to say thank you!
I don't know what software you're using, but vCarvePro has a v-inlay that would make those plugs easier. You don't have to worry about how tight your offsets are and it lets you get tighter lines than than the radius of your straight bits.
bryce86777 I think maybe he lost the coordinates to where each feature was located as well, so it would have been hard to line them up without making them substantially over sized...granted with a top down photo of the top he could have done an overlay in fusion 360 and re traced the cutouts...or done a pencil tracing of each feature, scanned them, and dropped them into fusion, or just cut the new plugs on the bandsaw using said templates...either way, the project would have been far from scrapped! Lol
I am a HUGE fan of yours, but I have to say, this might be my favorite piece you've done. The cats/cars were such a fantastic idea that really adds whimsy and character to an already gorgeous table. Thank you so much for making this and sharing with us.
I thought the same thing. I've been in his shoes with work projects, losing autocad files. I think the worst is when you upgrade autocad and forget to reset auto save to 5 minutes or less. I've lost hours of work before, it's painful.
My idea would have been to use scaled-up versions of the same images, recreated from the original paper cutouts. For example, if he made the new car 10% larger than the original, then he could have re-mortised the hole 10% larger, then re-made the filler pieces 10% larger.
I think the problem was that he'd scaled and warped the shapes to fit the sizes he needed, so even re-cutting the shaped would have lead to imperfect fits
loving the build in support for the thinner edge and removing weight from the middle, also elegant solution for allowing people to sit at the ends of the table.
Great to see such a personal project re-using the material and to be used at the heart of the home. Great channel with a wood workshop that most guys would like to aspire to. 👍
Very nice build Frank and always a pleasure to watch! It's also a really nice touch getting to kids to design inlays where the knotty areas were in the table top.
As a custom furniture creator, I so envy your shop. I am only 42 years young so as time passes this may upgrade (as long as my children move out at age ten). You are great creator and I appreciate your perfectionism but your super ability is your amazing editing skills. I have never created for video so I a completely ignorant of this skill and it makes your content look that much more Hollywood (in a great way). Thank You!
Frank, the content you put out is of an amazing quality. I'm no woodworker, but I love watching your videos. The cinematography and your cool calm voice are a superb match. The blue stuff you used to blacken the bolts is, if I recall correctly, normally used to weather the pieces so they look older than they really are (when people restore things or in prop-build e.g.). Loved what you did with the cats and cars!
Frank, I always love your videos. Your creativity is wonderful. What I really love is how much you include your kids. I always loved working on things with my dad, but he passed away when I was 11 and I feel like I missed out on making things with him. You are a true source of inspiration for me and when I eventually have kids, I know that I will include them in projects just like you do. Keep being awesome.
I love your furniture designs. The puzzle joinery is very elegant. Very much on par with Sam Maloof. Using the kids to design your Dutchmen adds a bit of a whimsical flair as well. Very nice. BTW, I'm in awe of your shop. It looks like you bought out an old factory or something.
haven't seen Franks work in a while, just too busy with my business. Frank seems to be getting better at his craft all the time. Beautiful to see and watch the videos as well.
Wow, wow, wow, Frank. Such a great video. The story, the drama, the videography, the laughter, the humility, the warm family moments and, oh yeah, the unique design and execution of the project itself. Thanks so much as usual.
Frank that is a great design. I would say it will last for ever. You make incredible videos and I enjoy them immensely. I particularly like how exact your videos and your cabinetry is. That shop must be the envy of all woodworkers on the we Thank you, Frank,
Very nice, Frank. Thanks for sharing. In the future, if you do make this again, please incorporate the kids drawings idea. This is such a wonderful, personal touch.
I’ve been binge watching ever since YT suggested a video of yours. I recognized something you said about the more expensive the paper, the more hesitant one is about drawing the first line. I think we heard it in the same place, but in different decades.
Frank, your videos are incredible, I may never have the ability to do what you do but I so enjoy watching you do it. As a grandfather of 7 it warmed my heart watching you incorporate the kids into the project. Thanks for sharing what you do.
The creativity of the various shots is incredible. I've seen this video once already but, coming back I'm really impressed by the camera work. Setting up shot and counter shot of the wood going into the tool. It's a level of artistry on top of the woodworking.
Nice project. It is most satisfying sitting at your table eating your dinner and knowing that you dragged the timber out of the dirt and made it into a table
I really appreciated the effort you put into this table. It became a Heirloom for the family. I know you spoke of swapping out the top or making it again I think the kids would love to have a Maisie keep up the good work
Good stuff Frank. I have done the same thing, I've built "prototypes" for the exact same reasons, kids, pets, play-dough, hot glue, paint, etc., and have slowly started replacing those pieces with the real ones now that the kids are older and the messy kid projects have diminished. It's a good idea, it let's you do things a tad different the second time around, things you wish you had done the first time. Love the videos. Can't wait to see the next project. Take care. B.
Man, when that thing gets all filled colors and glue and scratches the kids did, you will never get rid of it. That table already has a story, in a decade, it will have a history. My dad made something like this and has it to this day, its not the prettiest but it has family stories written all over it.
Frank, why you don’t have 100 million subscribers I will never know. You have that rare blend of scientific and artistic mind. The 2nd best thing on RUclips.
I was raised by my grandparents and they had this solid oak table. Typical 70's table but it was thick and well built. Everyone used to gather around that table for games, crafts, hair styling and late night gossip sessions. It wasn't that great looking of a table but it meant alot to us and unfortunately it got sold when my grandpa died and my grandma moved away. So please know that even if the table isn't in the ideal wood, the fact that you made it and had your kids design the cute cut outs, it will mean something to them later on in life. I miss my grandma's table and greatly regret letting it go. I did however manage to keep a chair that went with the table and I am glad I did.
That table is the bees knees, well done. Happy wife happy life. Would be pretty awesome to see a time management video showing how much time the cnc machine actually saves a woodworker vs them actually cutting the specific pieces themselves. Some discussion or formula based things to consider could be programming, set up, error ratio, potential Jig requirement, CNC equipment cost & maintenance vs comparable non automated equipment & maintenance.
I'm not sure that it really saves a lot of time especially on one off things. there's so much set up time and testing to make sure things are gonna go right. it's more that you can do things that would be very difficult any other way
..."I made a 2x4" You are the best! Excellent project!
"I made a 2x4""
I laughed sooo hard at this point. Best part of the movie!
No idea why this made me laugh so much
I LOVE the contour on the bottom of the table, so much more interesting than a flat slab.
I agree, its a really nice touch
Me thinks it will cup from the unevenness? You have more material being exposed to humidity changes.
tableshaper I think the wood was quite stable moisture wise anyway and by applying the finish, it should help to keep it from cupping. I guess time will tell though :)
As Frank said, this is only the prototype. The final version is coming.... in another 10 years (maybe 20)!
I can't believe how big the kids are since we first saw them in earlier videos. Am sure Frank and Ms hope it won't take 20 years to get them out on their own!!
The fact that the kids have their own little touches on the table is nice.. I hope they feel more connected with it.
Yeah, I don't see this table being retired for decades for that reason.
One of the finest craftsman on RUclips by far 👍👍
Quite a few great ideas in this piece Frank. The biggest ''Aha!' for me is the additional leg room for those seated at the ends, which on a typical trestle style table is problematic. Great example of design, execution and videography all in one package.
Oh, and your kids art to cover material defects is pure freaking gold.

The kids aren't such little kids anymore. Makes me feel old, and wow...I've been subbed and watching you for a long time.
It goes well with Eames chairs. Fantastic design.
What a cool idea, using the kids pictures as defect plugs. Great job Frank!!
Great video and commentary as usual. I was very interested in your remarks about remaking the table in a fine hardwood after the kids are moved out.
