So if you didn't grow up with or are used to the genre-melding and alternative production and Humanz is your intro to Gorillaz, you're not gonna like this. But Humanz is exactly what I was expecting and what I got. Whenever Gorillaz releases new projects, it's modern sounds of multiple genres and the features almost always work. There are a couple exceptions though. We Got the Power I didn't like even when it first released, Gorillaz vocals on Charger don't work and it would have been better to give Grace Jones the vocals on the majority of the track. I was hoping for more from the Danny Brown feature, but I also had my expectations way too high for that, Sex Murder Party was just a bad track, but this album is good and falls in line with what I expected for a 2017 Gorillaz project. Where it ranks in my top 10 of the year and how good it actually is is gonna take a few more listens (as is the case with Gorillaz) but pleased with the project as a whole.
i had a few problems with this album, it was overproduced sometimes, and there are features on too many songs, thus making it not even feel like a gorillaz album in my opinion. I prefer demon days.
I was never a fan of reaction videos but you make them so enjoyable dude. And I really like your analysis of these tracks even if I disagree with some. You've got a great way of explaining yourself. Keep it up man
Pat literally too. They wrote this album before they knew how the elections would go but they basically prepared for the worst lyrically and created this album with its vibe of chaos and entropy. It's wild that they managed to write topical tracks about the political environment BEFORE we all knew what was going to happen.
Ryan Charles that's exactly what I was talking about ? I just think it's really intriguing that they managed to NAIL IT as far as topical political lyrics without knowing.
One of the things I like about Gorillaz is how much certain tracks grow on me. Like there's always a few songs that pull me in, and by the time I'm tired of those, I have new favorites.
The whole album they want you to picture it like something catastrophic happened and the world is going crazy, and we are gonna have a party and dance as the world ends.
King O.C.T I like the idea with the album, but the narrative was done better in David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. Except for busted and blue, none of these tracks hit me emotionally, or I can't bump to.
I love Gorillaz they're still one of my favourite bands of all time simply because of the amount of variation in their music and the fact that they're a virtual band so they don't have to be restricted to one genre. IDGAF what anyone says they've been one of the most important UK bands of all time
Ian McQuestionable yeah, me too. ever since I heard it on the app commercial, I fell in love with it at the first time I heard it. its a great song.(in my opinion)
You're one of my favorite music reviewers on here, man. I don't even really give you the term "reactor" anymore, because you're so insightful on every track and on the album in general, that you're moving past simply "reacting". You're a normal first listen Reactor turning right into Needledrop status. (as far as music reviewing goes without showing a first reaction). Really enjoy your style.
isn't that tricking yourself into liking it? just listening to it until your brain becomes familier with it making you like it? isn't that what hit pop songs do?
Also, to be fair, you listened to the Deluxe version with all the bonus tracks. If you take those off, you're left with only 21 tracks, and if you take off the 7 interludes that are just a couple seconds long you're down to 14 tracks which is a normal amount of tracks for an album. Especially since a good hand full are either below 3 minutes or just about that 3 minute mark. So I don't think it's very fair to hold the argument that it's too long against the album. Plastic Beach with its' 16 full length tracks felt a lot longer to me than Humanz, all things considered. That being said, I still enjoyed your review and think you explained your thoughts really well! Keep it up! :)
Drew His flow is amazing on the track but the production isn't as wild as danny normally is on, like I think Oh hail nah, that el-p track went completely crazy during Danny's feature and it worked super well
Thank you for saying you'll give it a few more tries - this seems to be an album that grows on you the more you listen. There were some songs that were instant love for me, but others I needed to listen to a few times more. Thanks for giving it another chance :)
You know I've been listening to Gorillaz since the second grade and I'm 22 as of right now and I'm always open to new things hell I have such a variety in taste of music I work at a damn record store, but I really feel like this album was kinda bogus, I do like this album lyrically and production but I feel like if there was more actual Damon Albarn on the album it would of been great! I do think the album is good but really almost every track should say (feat. Gorillaz)
It's very diferent from their other projects, and not vert coehesive as an album but track by track it's one of his strongest albums, so many good songs, just all in different contexts
to be fair you reacted to the deluxe edition not the standard edition and if you remove the interludes its a 14 track album,so having 6 tracks you love isnt that bad
I listened to this album over my nightshift at work and almost wept from it's beauty. It's not Demon Days, it's long and thoughtfull as opposed to the quick punchiness of Demon Days but it is still so great. At no point in the album was I dissapointed or let down, just not hyped. The times where I was moved or provoked were numerous and intense in addition to having one of the greatest first songs on an album in a while. I wish it wasn't so long as to tire some people but it has enough spread so it doesn't feel like it drags on.
this album was supposed to be in a world where donald trump won and the world is going to shit, so each track details what they are doing for the last days of earth how people feel about it and how people deal with it
I fucken love that they went "hey guys lets say trump won.. i mean he is probably gonna... ok sing" Spotify mutes "Obama" and "Trump" in Let Me Out tho wtf
Induced Vertigo same with the CD version. but when you think about it that would ruin the feeling that the gorillaz are in they're own world. it's not like trump is Canon to the gorillaz plot
I just noticed you reviewed the Gorillaz album I must of missed it when you uploaded it but anyways My favorite tracks are 1.Saturnz Barz 2.Shes My Collar 3.Ascension 4.Let Me Out 5.Ticker Tape 6.Busted And Blue
Having so many tracks leaves you open to some being underwhelming. So, as a huge Gorillaz fan, I definitely feel a sense of being underwhelmed overall, but that could just be due to the fact that the hype for HUMANZ was crazy. I still like the album and will give it many more listens before I have a solid rating in my mind. Also to anyone hating and saying things like "this is trash" or "this isn't Gorillaz", y'all gottta understand that GORILLAZ DOESN'T HAVE A NORMAL SOUND AND THAT IS EXACTLY THE POINT. Damon gets all these amazing artists together and just does what feels right. Genres be damned. So, for me, it comes down to this: 1. Demon Days 2. Self-titled 3. Plastic Beach 4. *HUMANZ* 5. The Fall
I am Ben. G-sides as well. I didn't include those in my list because they are just b-side projects. They're both good with some new stuff but also demos and remixes (g-sides has the 19-2000 remix which is amazing 👌🏼).
I am Ben. Well D-Sides and G-Sides consist of B side tracks and remixes so they aren't considered studio albums, which is why they tend to get less recognition. However I have to agree they're all good
I think cutting it down is best. Cutting "Strobelite", "Elevator Going Up", "Penthouse", and "Sex Murder Party" improves the flow and cohesion significantly. Also, this is assuming you're listening to the regular version that ends with "We Got the Power", I've never heard the deluxe tracks.
The first time I heard this album I was the same way, had about 5 or 6 songs I definitely wanted to keep replaying. Now after listening to it at least 6 times the whole way through, I'm in love with almost every song and feel like each that I truly enjoy stands out it its own way. It's just the effect of Gorillaz music on me I guess lol
Such a great album and review Shawn, really brought me back when I used to listen to it. Could you react to Locksmith's album "Olive Branch" next? It is by far one of, if not the best albums of this year so far. Dude is by far one of the greatest lyricists to grip a microphone.
For people who don't love this album, I've found that trimming it down helps. Cutting "Strobelite", "Elevator Going Up", "Penthouse", and "Sex Murder Party" improves the flow and cohesion of the album significantly. Also, this is assuming you're listening to the regular version that ends with "We Got the Power", I've never heard the deluxe tracks.
Humanz is a disappointment of long awaited album. It only shines because there are some genuinely good songs sprinkled through the rest of this forgettable album.
El mañana was the tomorrow comes today of demon days. Broken was the el mañana of plastic beach and busted and blue is the broken of humanz. These are perfect songs!
17:40 Wow!!!! That's amazing! You're exactly right. Damon said in an interview that he brought his collaborators in and asked to them to make music with the thought of what would the world be like if trump became president (this was before he won obviously). He doesn't like trump and felt like the world would be in a bad state if he were the one running things. You are extremely insightful!
THANK YOU FOR ACTUALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE LYRICS AND FEEL OF THIS ALBUM. A lot of people were expecting a certain sound so they all are disregarding the meaning and hard work put into this album. I understand if maybe it isn't your type of music but don't say this album was lazy and that Damon didn't try hard enough.
Another great video, love the album too. Also really happy you liked Hallelujah Money, it's one of my favourites from the whole project and not many other people seem to enjoy it!
At first I thought that Charger wasn't great, but now it's one of my fave songs along with Strobelite, Saturnz Barz, Andromeda, The Apprentice, Let Me Out, Carnival, She's My Collar and We Got The Power! This is my second favourite album after Plastic Beach and tied with Demon Days, and I'm so glad Gorillaz are back :')
"Im not expecting bars from an alternative album" Get used to it my dude, when it comes to gorillaz there's always some deep meaning, thats why i adore them so much. Anyway, I would love to see a reaction to either demon days or plastic beach if you havent heard those!
I feel like the foreshadowing of vocals by the production was meant to express the message that music today is becoming less and less about a singing human and more and more focused on electronic sounds, dubstep, or artificial sounds that is now the main focus.
If you're in space and dying, that probably means you're out in the open. If that's true, you won't be able to hear the music if you try to play it because the vibrations can't reach your ear since there's no oxygen or anything for it to travel across.
"America the land of the free where you could live your dream as long as you don't look like me" ???Really I just find that ironic considering he is literally living his dream and getting paid hell a good to make music . crazy lol
I am a huge fan of the gorillaz and I struggled with this album... but I think for me there just wasn't enough 2D, but I wasn't sweating it because I know Gorillaz Albums grow on you overtime.
Criticism for this album be like Doesn't sound like Gorillaz It's too electronic It's more of a mixtape Too many features I'm disappointed Anyway I liked the album (like, everything but Carnival and Sex Murder Party) and your points were really valid. Nice vid man.
Doesn't sound like Gorillaz? The majority of their songs aren't even recognisable without their name in the title. And there's a character named Russel from the animated band, and he's an activist, so this is most likely inspired from him.
I've been watching your content for so long and I've just realized that I'm not subbed. That's changing now, but it never stopped me from coming back before.
I just realized that a lot of this album is anti Donald Trump, and in one of the interludes, he says "And out of the elephants trunk, confetti." The symbol for republicans is an elephant.
Teren Kowatsch THANK YOU. This needs to be pinned at the top.
Teren Kowatsch Can definitely agree with this
Shawn Cee Sucker
i had a few problems with this album, it was overproduced sometimes, and there are features on too many songs, thus making it not even feel like a gorillaz album in my opinion. I prefer demon days.
Totally agreed, even tho I liked "We Got The Power".
Damon Albarn was crying while recording Andromeda
Enslave The Mollusk how do you know?
Enslave The Mollusk He talked about it in an interview.
Maliya Patterson what interview? I need to see it!

The Nutz This guy is fucking awesome!
The Nutz 100% agree Shawn is a great entertainer and ive been following him for only a month and he has changed my view on music
He's not a reaction channel.
I never thought you would've review this tbh but YOU DID AND THANK YOU
lonny ocean I thought he would do an album review and not at reaction.
Lol people wild. this album was good, not one of my favorites but its not bad or horrible
I feel that g
its called ✨ racism ✨
@@andrealiee no.
it’s far from bad, but the special deluxe version of this album is genuinely terrible
Gorillaz will somehow always be ahead of their time
Pat literally too. They wrote this album before they knew how the elections would go but they basically prepared for the worst lyrically and created this album with its vibe of chaos and entropy. King O.C.T yeah with that concept, the album feels so much better
S Mac yea it does and kinda creepy At the same time
King O.C.T I like the idea with the album, but the narrative was done better in David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. Except for busted and blue, none of these tracks hit me emotionally, or I can't bump to.
That does make sense, especially with Ascensions "The skys fallin baby drop that ass 'fore it crash"
This is why this album is so crazy relevant today.
This mans talking about De La Soul like its one dude 😂
Anders Jacobsen I MADE A MISTAKE 😔
Shawn Cee all good my dude, we all do
hey shawn react to De La Soul's album the Grind Date, it is a great Hip- Hop album and has your favorite MC on it.
goddav anders. Håber, at du har en god dag. Godt album.
joseph orozco your favorite rappers favorite rapper
Vince staples and Gorillaz I love it I waited so long for this

AMVs ruined that evanescence song in 2006-2010
too true haha
Isac Oh man, brings back those Anime Vietnam flashbacks.
Isac LOL
the amvs that are just scenes with the b/w filter with music over it lmao
Isac I remember those years.
I'm surprised at how many people don't like charger, I fucking loved that track from the start. It's definitely in my top 3 for the album.
I got really anxious when their Magenta app came out cause i NEEDED to hear it after that...
Ian McQuestionable yeah, me too. ever since I heard it on the app commercial, I fell in love with it at the first time I heard it. its a great song.(in my opinion)
I love Charger but the message is kinda bad and not that good.
You're one of my favorite music reviewers on here, man. Hallelujah Money was one of my favorites too, for the same concept you brought up, Benjamin Clementine's voice is hypnotic to me.
You should listen to At Least for Now (if you haven't already)
Also, his Burberry performance is fucking legendary
Liam Molenda me too, a lot of people hated it but it was beautiful
LazyLies At first it was just strange. Then I listened to it again and I became hypnotized kinda like Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head.
It seems like a lot of people are dissapointed in this, I think this is really good considering how long it's been since their last album.
people are fucking brutal. After Frank Ocean coming back everybody had the nerve to say that Blond was weak...
Mike Craig Damon has worked with blur and made a solo album since the fall.
but I still think people are being harsh on the album. I loved it.
This One Cat I Found WHAT THE FUCK WHO SAID THAT? No one fucking disses Frank like that man that album was beautiful
Dr. Bright I've just read comments saying it wasn't a big comeback and that it was like low effort or some shit... but I absolutely loved it.
WHAT LAST NOOO WHY
I didn't like it but I think I got to listen to it more because that's how Gorillaz works.
Ryan Charles i really like most the songs after the 5th listen
isn't that tricking yourself into liking it? just listening to it until your brain becomes familier with it making you like it? isn't that what hit pop songs do?

Drew His flow is amazing on the track but the production isn't as wild as danny normally is on, like I think Oh hail nah, that el-p track went completely crazy during Danny's feature and it worked super well

1. The Apprentice
2. She's my collar
3. Submission
4. Let me out
5. Saturns Barnz
6. Strobelight
7. Momentz
8. Out of Body
Thanks Shawn!!
Do Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain tho!
I like the songs that have Damon Albarn vocals
YourFrienlyNeighborhood KFCDealer so 2-D's voice
Medieval_Darkness AYY
Totally agree. Saturnz barz and She is my collar are the best
Yeah 😂
so most of them?
Thank you for saying you'll give it a few more tries - this seems to be an album that grows on you the more you listen. There were some songs that were instant love for me, but others I needed to listen to a few times more. Thanks for giving it another chance :)
This is my first Gorillaz project and I actually really like it. I'm not into many alternative rock bands.
alternative *B A T H*
They aren't alternative rock
Busted an blue makes me want to sit and look out a window on a rainy day and think about life.
You know I've been listening to Gorillaz since the second grade and I'm 22 as of right now and I'm always open to new things hell I have such a variety in taste of music I work at a damn record store, but I really feel like this album was kinda bogus, I do like this album lyrically and production but I feel like if there was more actual Damon Albarn on the album it would of been great! alex castillo Didn't say it was. It's still unnecessary and far too many throwaways lol
so glad you liked the production on Hallelujah Money!! Thought I was the only one!

Your reaction to busted and blue was ME WHEN I HEARD IT god I relate
You're of my favorite rewiers of all time, love from Portugal!!!!!
You should do Deltron 3030, Organized Konfusion-, A Piece of Strang, or Blackstar
you would love those albums, amazing production and even better bars
you have great taste
both sides of the brain back to back with 3030

You're listening to the deluxe version that's why it's 26 tracks
@busted and blue
Is it even fair to have a track like that
I agree, stop tearing out my heart D
the "yo i forgot to breathe" on busted & blue was ME as hell😂

how did you not like charger omg

Fishm0nger Mediocre beat and shit vocals.
You just don't feel what i feel when listening to it. I wish you did though, i wish everyone does.
I was thinking that everyone was in love with Charger ,it's just that is so perfect, the vibe it gives me is like ohhh god
I loveeee charger especially the ending the hype of it😍😍😍

If you're in space and dying, that probably means you're out in the open. If that's true, you won't be able to hear the music if you try to play it because the vibrations can't reach your ear since there's no oxygen or anything for it to travel across.
Void's End But.....LET ME LIVE!
lol
I fucked love this album so much. I never got into Plastic Beach but this is Demon Days level for me, maybe higher, so so good.
"America the land of the free where you could live your dream as long as you don't look like me" ???Really I just find that ironic considering he is literally living his dream and getting paid hell a good to make music . crazy lol
Saw them live on the plastic beach tour, cant believe its been 7 years already!!!
He listened to the deluxe and called it too long...
Gabriel Mercado lol

Dude please please react to Clarence Clarity- No Now i have a good feeling you'd love that
Jacob Pousson this album is greattt
yes man!
I was hoping for a review of The Now Now when it dropped... guess not. At least I can rewatch this 😭
u seem so nice, i watched the whole video :)
He may not realize it now, but he seems to fall in love with Damon's voice.
You didn't even listen to Kali Uchis’ vocals on She's My Collar 😭 It's aiight tho
I am a huge fan of the gorillaz and I struggled with this album... but I think for me there just wasn't enough 2D, but I wasn't sweating it because I know Gorillaz Albums grow on you overtime.
React to a radiohead album!
once again another great review, your analysis of tracks seems to improving with each review! always great to hear your opinion!
Man you gotta listen to The Impossible Kid by Aesop Rock
SHAWN PLEASE.
Do more GORILLAZ REVIEWS PLS. UR VIDEOS are GREAT, good job, Shawn, keep it up.
Do King Geedorah - Take Me To Your Leader
What you said before Submission is what I think everytime I see Danny Brown as a feature
i loved every track on humanz. i must be in the minority.
really happy I clicked on this video, it was entertaining af. subbed my dude
26 tracks should be a standard. I hate it when an artist drops and album, and it's only 6 fucking tracks including interludes.
Nah hard disagree
Your content is absolutely brilliant man, for real.
Thumbnail game untouchable
red rum Spent 12 years on it
This is my first time watching your channel and I really love your channel.
2:00 MY NIGGA WHAT
The Santoryu Savage I said pause tho
ALSOOOOOOO. Listen to Undun by The Roots. Easily one of the top 3 concept albums of the past decade. When it clicks with you your life will end
Criticism for this album be like
Doesn't sound like Gorillaz
It's too electronic
It's more of a mixtape
Too many features
I'm disappointed
Anyway I liked the album (like, everything but Carnival and Sex Murder Party) and your points were really valid. Nice vid man.
Gabriel Gian To be fair those are pretty legitimate reasons for not liking it.
Doesn't sound like Gorillaz? The majority of their songs aren't even recognisable without their name in the title. And there's a character named Russel from the animated band, and he's an activist, so this is most likely inspired from him.
Derp cat I don't think so but opinions
conny - didn't get your point
Gabriel Gian this album definitely felt more like a Russel album than a 2D, Murdock, or Noodle album
What I love about gorillaz is that they don't stick to one genre. Every album it's a different genre. Gorillaz is one of my favorite bands.
Wait, u gave more life a 8/10 but u gave humanz a 6/10
The Legend 26 I updated More Life in the comments as a 7 lol
I've been watching your content for so long and I've just realized that I'm not subbed. That's changing now, but it never stopped me from coming back before.
I just realized that a lot of this album is anti Donald Trump, and in one of the interludes, he says "And out of the elephants trunk, confetti." The symbol for republicans is an elephant.
When making the entire album, Damon basically said: "what if trump won and fucked up everything".
this is the outcome
