I knew the UK was at the forefront of video games in the 90's but being responsible for an entire third of all videogame content is mindblowing, though I'm not surprised since I was an Amiga user and almost every major developer on that machine was British; Core, Bullfrog, DMA Design, Team 17, Sensible Software, Bitmap Brothers, Rebellion, Psygnosis, Ocean, Flair, Gremlin, Graftgold, Image Works, Reflections, U.S. Gold, etc
Very sad the fate that's become most of those studios, most gobbled up by larger corps to either be closed down arms of those larger companies or turned in to support studios for their main franchises.
The UK 8-bit industry was vital to create this generation of developers but Core Design and Bullfrog also had their 16-bit era on the Amiga and other systems. Before Tomb Raider and Dungeon Keeper there was Rick Dangerous and Populous.
1997: LARA CROFT and the rise of BRITSOFT | The Money Programme | Retro Gaming | BBC Archive 8.10.24 2037pm as wonderful as it is.. and they are.........how does a dyslexic man write computer programmes... do they all turn out ten times removed form his original vision..?
Anyone recognise the pub? I visited their studio in Bristol about work experience and chatted to Toby Gard, it was in Stokes Croft. I thought it was the old Star and Garter at first as that's nearby, but no...
I've recently learnt that the first outing of Tomb Raider games didn't actually sell that amazingly well in the United States, having the same popularity of like "Syphon Filter" or other fringe franchises. Americans mostly dug into DOOM and Crash, but here in Europe Lara Croft really blew up over night! As a kid growing up, she was on the cover of Cheerios and Shreddies I was having for breakfast, they renamed the Lucozade bottles, a popular pub drink here to Larazade! Marks and Spencers sold Tomb Raider clothing and socks, I had the T-Shirt! The Royal Family was selling notepads and soap with her all over it via Grosvenor of London and my local newsagent was selling the Comic Books! To that effect: Tomb Raider 2 (mentioned in this BBC Video) is the 2nd best selling PlayStation 1 game in Europe of all time, just behind Rayman!
It's weird what time does though. I loved so much about it at the time, but I also remember wondering why fashion had got so dull since the 60s/70s/80s with no era defining look. Music was great and broad in taste, but I loved the 60s bands and felt like a lot were just trying to imitate them, rather than do something new for the era. Now I look back and realise we had it good compared to the diminishing returns of culture these days...but then I'll probably look back in another 20 years and think that the 2020s weren't so bad compared to the 2040s too!
fantastic memo😍ries. A fantastic decade. The tear is rolling. My youth. Raised on 8 bits. The best computer decade was the 1990s. But the 1980s had their unique, pristine atmosphere and mood of discovering the entire computer world. In the 1990s, serious business began. my first personal computer PC. These were times when demand was constantly ahead of supply, hence there are so many great games and companies creating them. Eidos company, several people. Passion born from the heart and that's how it was with everything back then. I feel nostalgic because I was next to them. We followed their development. We were waiting for their games. Bullfrog. Who doesn't know Sindicate. The kids of the new millennium have no idea what they've lost. They already got everything ready. Very powerful computers and mass production of games that were killed by commercialism. I am completely indifferent to the current IT market. nothing attracts me to him, in fact it repels me. Back then, the 80s and 90s were absolutely magic. Every day was filled with the joy of interacting with computers. This cannot be described. It had to be experienced. When you go to sleep hugging your beloved Commodore 64..
Nothing has changed, all the major platforms and companies behind software and tech in general are either US or Asian. Not just the UK, but Europe has neglected in investing in home grown industries and talent.

PLEASE take me back to that time. Some of the happiest times of my life. It honestly seems like 5 minutes ago, not 27 years ago.
100% mate. Miss the 90s 😢

I always wondered as a teen how the period of 1990, to 2000 played out for the Brits.
