VR makes racing games SO MUCH BETTER! // F1 23 VR Gameplay (Quest 2 PC VR)

- Every racing game should have official VR support, I've never really been a fan of racing games but since I got myself a Logitech G29 wheel plus shifter for Gran Turismo 7 VR for PSVR2 and have found myself searching for more VR racing experiences to test this equipment out with. What I've discovered is I actually really enjoy racing games but only when played in VR! F1 23 is the first Formula 1 game I've ever played, I've never had an interest in the sport and that lack of knowledge means I'm really really terrible at the game but F1 23 VR still manages to be an immersive and outright enjoyable experience even for someone like me. It doesn't look as sharp as Gran Turismo 7 VR, even with all the graphics pumped up to the max (using my 4090 VR setup to ensure the best performance) it still looked a little soft and washed out in places. However a lot of this could be due to the Quest 2 rather than the game itself, the PSVR 2 headset has a far higher resolution so I need to get myself a more comfortable PC VR headset that can compete with the clarity of PSVR 2 for a more accurate comparison.

This was a surprising crossover for me, of course I love your regularly scheduled VR programming but I also watch a lot of F1 esports on RUclips, so to see a layman non-F1 fan tackle this game in VR was very entertaining 🤣
Subscribed since 2021 and i enjoy your witty commentary. You deserve a million subscribers regardless of your vr content
Gotta see more f1 content from ya man(or racing in general). It’s become one of my favorite genres and watching actual new people play is very fun to watch imo. Ps. Try assetto corsa’s alpha vr if you haven’t already. Won’t be disappointed 😊
When you brake, you shift the centre of gravity forward and reduce rear wheels contact as they lift slightly. If you turn at tge same time, at those speeds, you're losing control of vehicle.
The graphics were quite soft for me as well with my Rift S but managed to improve it a bunch just now by playing with a few of the graphics settings. Hard to tell which setting helped the most as I changed a bunch of them but I think increasing the sharpness setting helped.
Never been a racing fan but GT7 on PSVR2 has been eating up many hours, especially now I learned you can listen to Spotify playlist in the background!
Same here it feels like rake a litteral drive and chill with your favorite tunes that never get old, especially when you are racing 🏁
Mate your not alone gt7 has been the best gaming experience I’ve ever had stunning stuff
I think the umbrella guys ready for a photo shoot.😂 yeah im definitely grabbing this
The best looking racing/driving sim is Assetto Corsa with CSP and Pure mod although your 4090 is hamstrung by the Quest 2. I like the race cars but when I just want to get lost in an experience I jump in the F40 or another road car, set the time to sunrise and take a drive picking my way through the 2-way traffic on the twists and turns of the LA Canyons. Pure bliss.
Sounds great. Asseto is better from this F1 in VR ?
See this is exactly the sort of video I need. Someone who's never tried racing VR. I'm currently 50/50 as not got unlimited funds. But I DO love my racing sims.
Did you just call Austria Australia? 😜
And I'd recommend driving at high revs all the time (lower gears if needed). Only exception is if you're accelerating in low gears and you tend to get wheel spin - then you can short shift (shifting up slightly early) to make the acceleration just a tad more sluggish.
Other than that it's all about track knowledge: Learning the lines, brake points, etc. I usually take around 50 laps to get comfortable with a track. Solo runs + building up carefully will help you immensely here.
When you are braking, you need to feather the brakes to be able to turn while braking and get the fastest line, if this is too difficult you can turn on anti-lock brakes in assists.
The reason you can't break and turn is most cars you've probably driven have ABS (Anti-Lock Break System) built in, which automatically lets off the breaks the more you turn but it's subtle, F1 cars do not have ABS and the tyre only has enough grip to break or turn, not both at the same time
The game does have an ABS assist. He probably had it off.
@@roguescorner9042 I know it does? I was telling him why that was happening to him because he had it turned off
Apparently you should always scrub speed before cornering, because stablility is lost when breaking during cornering
formula 1 does not have ABS, if you're locking the wheels, obviously you can't turn.
formula 1 has a LOT of aero, so it has more grip and braking force at high speeds, as you slow down you have to ease off the brake pedal to prevent the wheels from locking due to decreased aerodynamic grip.
Did you bump the renderscale up for Link? 1.3x is generally as much as you need
Same reason I span my first focus st some years back, tyres only have so much load you can put on them before they give up on traction, braking and cornering put them both under a significant amount of load and combined together, too much generally, especially in an F1 car with amazing braking and acceleration
love me some sim rig VR, sold my PSVR2 as got really into PC VR Racing now, there is just more choice at the mo
All that's missing would be the g force sensation, I wonder if a couple motors and racing harness being pulled bidirectional would help
Your front tyres don't have infinite grip. You can brake using all the grip available or you can turn using all the grip available, not both. If you want to turn, you need to brake less. The idea is to trail brake into corners i.e. you threshold brake in a straight light to scrub off most of your speed and then as you start turning, you gradually reduce braking to allow some of your front end grip to be used for turning. You do want a small amount of braking into the corner to keep the weight on the front tyres which helps the car turn and rotate. Enjoy.
GT7 is an arcade game so it can ignore annoying physics limitations like this to make it easier for people.
And yes, VR is the only way to play racing games.
If you turn on full ABS, you'll find it a lot easier.
@@davefellowsor set the brake bias a bit more on the rear, than you can still drive without
Hmmm.. It shouldn't look blurry on the Quest, unless the output resolution is below 1.7x native resolution, assuming that reprojection (asynchronous time warp) is employed.
Figured I'd try my luck to win, even though this was 3 months ago, but the link isn't in the description lol. I'm determined to get a Quest 3 and finally get to try a wireless headset. I'm used to PSVR1 so I'm excited to see the difference, at some point.
How did you get around the head movement bug ???
I drove 2 laps yesterday (3070ti, Quest2 on Link cable) and still am nauseated today because of it...
(I have hundreds of hours on AC, w same hardware, and never get VR motion sickness)
In a way the "merkiness" feels more real to me which I think a racing game needs. Lighting isn't bad either.
Also there are a lot of racing vr games apparently. Iracing, assetto corsa, acc dirt rally 2.0 as so on :)
You can turn slightly when breaking if your trailbreaking.
But the point is you should be finished breaking before turning a lot as when you are turning towards the apex you are already carefully on the throttle again.
Thanks for the insightful video. You would do loads better racing if you lowered steering wheel rotation to around 400 or 600 degrees in f1.
Same wheel, cutting my teeth in GT7. Having a blast and gearing up for this game on pc :)
Beardo how higher is psv2 resolution ? you forgot to mention Supersampling settings that you use and bitrate and so on ... its maybe 200 pixels per eye the idea is PSVR is 60fps with SSW or what they used goes up to 120FPS (Hz) and on PCVR with Quest 2 if you have a proper videocard for VR you can get 120 FPS real. PSVR2 has dynamic foveated rendering and other things. Just try to tell or test the full story.
So you use the oculus quest 2 for this + vr Steam app and then you also link a steering set up to the pc correct ?
Vr has made me wana try different genres of games that i would have never played, like racing, flying, and even golf.
but it has also given me a unrealistic sense of the real world because now i feel like i could be a military fighter jet flying, pink slip street racing, ultra supremacist golf champion.
I think you have just convinced me i got to get a pc
It's a total game changer in VR my lap times improve loads
How were you able to record f1 23 like this? It only shows up as my left eye when I tried recording it.
nothing beats, a fully modded assetto corsa rain all weather mods active, still to this day the most immersive vr experience iv ever had full stop
I think ams2 beats assetto corsa honestly
@@noimageavailable2934and ACC beats AMS2, looks way more realistic, but is only playable using OpenXR
I didn't realise they had kept VR in 2023. I didn't play much of 2022 because for some reason on my Rift, it felt like my seating position was always changing slightly or they world was slightly jittery when stationary. I'll have to see if it's gone in 23
Maybe your seating position has non-optimal tracking? Rift can be a bit tricky with that.
@@Elgsdyr I'm not sure. I play a lot of Assetto Corsa and Dirt Rally in VR and never felt this problem. I'll adjust the sensors out of interest
@@86themadhatter27 You're probably right that it's game related, then. Great games, BTW. Have played both a tonne. :)
it's on sale at Steam (-60%)... Have still nausea from 2 laps I did yesterday.... but seeing this video , it doesn't seem to occur for everyone...
So if you haven't already , give it a try... Let me know if you still get the VR motion bug (and esp if you find how to work around it) .
(I'll be requesting a refund before 29/11 if I don't get it sorted out)
03:51 have you ever braked hard with a car without ABS and steered? this is normal behavior, the mass of the car leans outward and the inner wheel loses grip, causing it to lock, at the same time the outer wheel is overloaded and locks as well, you get understeer and can no longer steer
Looks like you wheel rotation is out, when you turn your actual wheel 90 degrees, the in game wheel should match. This might be why you are struggling in corners. Should be able to calibrate. Also you can turn when braking, maybe check your brake pressure.
For me just getting into F1 23
I had ti learn that if im gonna slam the brakes. Do not and i mean do not let go of the brakes as hard as you slammed.
Pretty much trail brake.
In Forza idk why but i can bearly get trail braking done so i do that moderate brake shift weight, wheel feels nice and sturdy and then let off and complete the corner
Yea not in this game, here if i do that im gonna launch my self out the track or straight up have an akward understeer and a later correction.
F1 23 definitely got my attention to try VR
Thanks for the video. If this was on PSVR2, I'd buy it. While GT7 is awesome in VR, unfortunately, it's the only decent racing game on PSVR2. I wish PS would bring the Wipeout Omega Collection to PSVR2 to scratch my VR racing itch until third parties start bringing other racing games to PSVR2, which I hope will happen in the future.
10:18 Dude, that's the RedBull Ring in Austria. Not Albert Park in Australia.
yeah, you have some kind of artifact going on with shadows and lighting. I dont think that's reprojection. It doesnt look like reprojection artifacts on my quest 2, index or original vive.
@Beardo Benjo: "Settings->Graphic settings->videomode-> change from dlss quality to taa with ffx sharpening" results in a sharp picture. You may have to turn down vr graphic settings from ultra to high on rainy races (ultra is fine without rain). Thx god i realized, that i can test the game via ea access. To players of f1 22 vr: On my system (5800x3d, 4090, 32gb 3600 ddr4), the overall performance is better with taa+ffx sharpening at least in dry weather (benchmark miami dry has been 89 average on g2, 100% steam ss) compared to Fi 22. With rain average fps dropped to 85 fps . Dlss implementation is better too, but still not perfect (but at least acceptable for me - resulting in stable 89-90 fps, vr ultra even with rain). It is a little bit blurry, but not as blurry as in f1 22 vr.
You should align the steering angles of the game with your wheel. F1 needs 360 Degrees, you should map the wheel to that aswell. You can fix that in the game settings so other games dont get broken
f1 uses 300 degreees of steering i think
@@27enzo no, real f1 uses way beyond that. Look at the wheels at montreal or monaco in the hairpins. The game itself locks input at max 360. Although Esports drivers tend to lower the max rotation to around 300.
300 degrees
You should drive that way in real life, brake and slow down for the speed you need before turning. It keeps the car in full control and enables acceleration around corners, that balances the car and feels smoother. Cars now all have ABS that handles a lot of this enabling you to brake and turn, to avoid accidents. F1 cars do not have ABS to put more emphasis on the driver.
Mine is keep crashing using EA launcher. Actually the steam VR crashing. Any solution?
Even in a racing game Beardo tries to kill people 😂
I bet your steering problems have to do with matching up or wheels max rotation with an F1 car. Look through the settings to see if there is some kind of limit you can put on your wheel to match the rotation, I think F1 cars have a max rotation is 360 degrees while your wheel is probably like 900
that was my poblem my wheel was set to 900...Was like driving a bus around corners lol
6:19 thanks for the feedback XD
F1 cars don't have ABS, and if the wheels lock up you can not turn and break at the same time, the same goes for cars without ABS, but I think it's probably way harder to avoid locking up your wheels in an F1 car over a track car or a normal car. but idk
Australia😂 ...that's Austria my friend! Mountains no Kanguroos!...and I life there😅
How are you playing it? I just tried and on the lowest settings I think I got 5FPS… absolute trash!
Turn whle braking = tires locking up and no steering happens.
That's why. You never ever do hit the brakes and turn at the same time in any racing class. You can basically hammer the brakes and go over into trail braking into a turn but not what you try here.
Beardo, you should get a Pimax crystal.
Hello with the RX 7900 XTX when I play in VR I see a lot of flickering it happens to you too ...
4:56 for a moment I thought this games features handtracking 😮
(Like the AC mod)
Is it just me, or does it feel like the inside of the helmet is getting a wicked reflection?
Sad is the day, beardo ran out of stand alone quest titles, has to dig into the pc vr catalog. There is a dream.. 1 day we'll get back to it! One day.. 😅
hopefully not. i don't give a s*** about quest titles as i utterly refuse to use money on the facebook store
DRC stands For domain race server, cargame thing on pc 😅
You should warn people that F1 23 requires a very expensive PC to run smoothly in VR. My setup is i7-12700K and 3070ti with 32GB RAM and I can't set graphic settings more than low because it becomes laggy and poor FPS performance.
I have a i7-12800h, 4060 and 64gb; u think I can get a somewhat enjoyable experience?
I suppose it will work better than mine but I recommend you Assetto Corsa with Formula Alpha 2023 mod for example...
@@robertosoyo thanks 👍🏼
Benjo have you checked out luke ross new AER 2.0 yet ?
Just finished playing F1 23 in VR and to me it's pretty good but then again it's my first F1 game as well, just curious what other people think.
Just got into F1 and I'm thinking about getting this game as well to try it in VR. How is the multiplayer?
I haven't played multiplayer yet but will soon. Mostly the storyline which is good at least to me, way better than NBA 2K stories lol. But in VR it performs well although I do have a 4090 but I speculate it will be nice as long as you a decent card@@SHIZURAKU
Bruh. How is this not available on PSVR2 when they HAVE THE FRAMEWORK FOR IT!?
Make your wheel only rotate 360 degrees for F1 23.
what build do you have?
F1 cars have 360 degree steering rotation
Drs is the wing in the backe
Nice
"Trail braking" allows you to turn and break, learn this technique and you`ll be grand
Trail braking you say?! I'll be googling that right now. Thank you
set your wheel to 360 degrees in the G29 software - will change your life :)
Guys, he's actually an EXPERT on F1. Don't be fooled!! lol
The latest beta test didn't start in VR for me😢
The only way I race anymore. No more pancake racing for me.
Turn up your wheel sensitivity then you can turn while breaking
When you brake 100% you can steer 0%, but when braking 50% you can steer 50%.
Is in real life also😉
Looks like you didn’t set your wheel rotation max to 360 ish. Will be almost impossible without
I'm such a noob I don't even know what that means
in the Logitech Ghub - click on the wheel and you will see a setting for overall turn - so its usually set to 900 I think - turn it down to 360 and you only need to turn your hands a small amount to get around the corner @@BeardoBenjo
It doesn't work good with my quest 2 I don't know why but I got hard framing.
can you play assetto corsa vr with graphics mods
Why can't you brake and turn? It's to do with traction. The brakes on F1 cars are powerful, when you stomp the brakes you're pushing the limits of traction, if you try to turn there's no traction left and the car will start to slide. Same thing with stomping on the gas and turning. If you brake hard and then stomp on the gas while you're trying to turn, you also won't have enough traction and you will lose control.
I love it. When I play AMS2 it looks like this but f1 23 looks terrible. Ok a 4090 instead of my 3060ti but still it should be playable but it's not.
Btw I feel good about my F1 racing when I'm watching you 🤭🤭🤗
So you say f1 23 looks not as good as AMS2 f1? and what about physic compared Both?
"I dont know anything about F1"
While almost pulled a Hamilton at 4:59
anyone know how well this game works with gamepad?
It looks like your steering lock is not set correctly. You appear to be turning the wheel far too much for how quick the steering ratio for an f1 car should be.
Brake, turn, accelerate out the corner
i use my VR set on formula 1 but i use my PS5 control haha
I’ve got the g27.
You don't have a problem with shaking head in VR mode ?
Can you play without link cable?
you can now - all depends on your wifi though
I don't know why this isn't on psvr2.
With it not having psvr 2 support is a no buy for me after experiencing gt7 in vr. Damn shame
Your steering angle is set incorrectly, it is much too big, you probably still have it at 900°, you have to set it in the driver to 360°, for a Formula 1 car.
I didnt realise Australia had moved to Europe?? lol...
Your locking your brakes
Austria, not Australia. :)
btw thats not Austrailia that Austria
❤
This game must look like garage if you think gt7 on the PSVR2 looks better.
Have you not set Anti-Aliasing to TAA and FidelityFX ?
4090 and quest 2 at native resolution should look a considerable leap above the mura, pixelated, ghosting infested GT7 VR.
That's painful to watch, your degrees of wheel rotation needs to be cut in half if not more. Try to match the on screen wheel and then increase it if needed.
car handling in the f1 games is strange try the open wheel cars in assetto corsa much better
FYI that's Austria not Australia xd
Woaaaaaaaaaaa @Beardo Benjo... DO NOT STOP BRAKING when turning. What you need to learn is gradually ease the braking when slowing down until the apex, then at the crossover (at the apex) gradually built up throttle and let go of the brakes there.
Basically, what you want is to trailbrake. So don't only brake in a straight line, let go, turn, and then throttle. No. Brake harder at first, gradually let go and brake only a little until the apex, then built up throttle.
Your wheel is not correctly setup, you shouldn’t need to rotate that much. I’d recommend you look around for some article explaining how to set it up so you only rotate around 560 degrees at most.
