I live in San Diego for the last 34 years and just visited Melbourne for the very first time in April this year when we got off Princess cruise ship after NZ trip. It was a very pleasant surprise to us how good Melbourne is. We like Victoria market so much, went there to eat every other day. As far as city planning and activities, I think Melbourne is probably better. But we live in Santaluz, northern suburb of SD and we are older and don't go to downtown much except eating at Nobu restaurant in Gas Lamp. But the weather here in SD is just incredible, I don't think Melbourne can beat that. The weather was great in April when we visited there. I don't mind to visit there again. BTW, we like Melbourne better than Sydney. NZ is pretty, just too quiet. Just curious whether Melbourne has community like Santaluz? www.santaluz.com
i loved whole foods and trader joes. but they can be expensive because its mostly for upper middle class or high class people. i mostly shopped at a jewel supermarket, cvs, target, walgreens, dominicks ( which is gone now i think). i was living in illinois btw. when i lived in the city trader joes and whole foods were close to my neighborhood since i was living in a pretty safe area for families to live in.
I actually just watched the vlogs of Chris and Ben in Melbourne I found them ...that was ok I am going to melbourne and shall try those American doughnuts ...so not as bad after all .....although I live in Perth I know Melbourne travel their a lot ..although I am Sydney born
Wonderful video, gentlemen. On the topic of sport, the tennis Grand Slam tournament is The Australian Open (not the Melbourne Open) and is a global event only 3 other cities (Wimbledon, New York and Paris) have. As wonderful as the Melbourne Cup is, the Del Mar racing seasons in summer and in November are nevertheless superb, and is probably the only sporting event that can compete with Melbourne as far as stature, with possibly Major League Baseball at Petco another. And, yes, while the Chargers left SD, Fitzroy and South Melbourne footy clubs are long gone.
I can say Melbourne, but I'm from Melbourne lol probably bit biased! I like both for different things...I admit when I first went to Walmart, I was like wow so much in one store! We don't really have that store (well I haven't seen one that big with so many things) in Australia. Food wise, I'd probably go with Melb but san diego wins at the Mexican. For comic con, san diego definitely wins! We have a version in Melbourne and it's getting bigger but people don't camp ages for panels here lol. And we don't have the comic con shuttles.
welcome, i could see you two meeting up in whatever destination for a review. chris does a cracking review, dont get me wrong, thats why im still subscribed, but two people having a debate / conversation adds a unique perspective to it.
ozzycarnut You're right Ozzy, Chris, does fantastic reviews that are informative and fun! I've watched many of his videos and I always find I want to visit the places he's gone to! We're going to try and meet up again soon to do more of these fun debates. If the subscribers want it I'm sure between us we'll try and deliver even via Skype. Don't forget to check out my Podcast if you haven't as yet!
I gotta say ben, melbourne is a hard place to beat when its laid out like it was in this video. sorry chris but san diego doesnt really have a fighting chance here! between the coffee and food (worlds best in my view ... and ive done new york, la etc .. the food is about on par with gas station food there compared to melbourne food), the art and community culture, and the crazy array of sports that call melbourne home, excellent healthcare and employment opportunities, its easy to see why so many call it home. the only things i can see going against it at the moment is the cost of housing, its pretty obscene, entry price of $1m AUD / $800k USD is pretty standard for a modest 2 bedroom house. traffic is getting crazy, not sydney crazy yet but its getting there. a good beach is an hour or more away, torquay / bells / sorrento etc ... lorne / apollo bay is awesome if you like a drive, its just sublime. probably nitpicking here really to be honest, as for all the amazing stuff melbourne has who gives a toss if you have to 'make do' with st kilda beach / brighton beach. its funny you should mention banksy, i was there for the banksy exhibit when it was on about 12 months ago. awesome artist.
ozzycarnut I missed out on seeing Banksy. It would've been cool. I'm glad you liked the video and how we formatted it. It was pretty ad hoc even from my end. I had minimal notes. I must admit Chris is a wealth of information on anything relating to travel. I'm amazed he missed a few important San Diego landmarks.
It's kind of apples and oranges. It sounds like Melbourne is a great place to vacation, but San Diego is a great place to live for convenience and proximity to similar attractions and sites in Melbourne. It made me sad when he thought Walgreens (even the fancy one in SF) was a supermarket.
shoppernt08 sorry. I was just so impressed with the Walgreens because I was really hungry. Don't worry I know there would be plenty of better supermarkets in the US!
So where u in Melbourne because this is disappointing as I never saw no clog of u travelling around Melbourne and I agree Melbourne is the best city to travel to its amazing ..ok Chris where's the pics of u in Melbourne
Iceland has been rated the best drinking water in the world, USA is No 18 Australia is No 5 BUT the city rated the best is Sydney..Australia,,,Italy by the way is rated at No 17 and you cant compare San Diego and Melbourne on is 1.5 million while the other is over 5 million and ONLY Melbourne calls Melbourne the sporting capital, if you actually compared Sydney and Melboure, there are more large stadiums per head of populat ion in Sydney than ANY where else in the world! And I am glad Melbourne is home of Aussie Rules, it is a girls game! Well compared to the codes played elsewhere!
i dont believe that rubbish about melbourne being the most liveable city in the world. i have been to most main world cities and melbourne , which i like, is not the best by any means. sydney is better for a start.
melbourne has always tried to be better than sydney , they keep trying , in sydney its not an issue , we dont care which is best . every city has its good points , but to say melbourne has better food and coffee than sydney is rubbish . it is the same , with slightly different influences. enjoy both places.

David Chen thanks Melbourne's a great city! Thanks for visiting!!!
We have a farmers market at every city/town in USA
that is what I like about the USA!
Farmers' markets also exist in Australia but not sure how they compare in scale to the US.
Great Mexican food in San Diego - Mexico is only 20 minutes away from San Diego. 🙂
Rose That’s me !! Great! Melbourne (or Victoria in general) is also called Mexico by Sydneysiders. It’s south of the border.
I'm from australia not Melbourne I love San Diego I visit USA every second year
Very cool!

Eric Chiu Fair enough! That's a vote to San Diego
San Diego came in at No 19 , which surprised me..I would have had it come in about 224
You guys have great chemistry. Can't wait to watch the other vids of you two together
Thanks Richard! :)
thanks Richard!

Marie Tielmann thanks for the votes! Melbourne up by one!
+Marie Tielmann Maybe the fact that people don't camp for panels in Melbourne is a good thing! Thanks for the vote! :)
I live in Melbourne however I have been to San Diego a few times. Rather Melb but with San Diego Food haha!
+CHARIN V I'm going to consider that a 50 / 50 vote then! :)
CHARIN V yeah that sounds like you could go either way.
fantastic video gents. i like the format, it offers a couple perspectives, you feel part of a conversation if that makes sense.
+ozzycarnut Thanks ozzy!
ozzycarnut Thanks mate. Appreciate that you liked the video. I personally love the format maybe we'll do some more after the other two come out.

+soldonhim Yes... That sounds like a vote for San Diego! :)
So entertaining , i couldn't even gusse it took 38 minutes !
Thanks a heap. I'd like to do more with Chris!!
Great video. Well done. Been to both, have to say Melbourne gets my vote but CHris put up a good debate. Alan
+A Connolly Thanks Alan! Melbourne + 1
A Connolly thanks! Melbourne is beating San Diego!
Classic debate!!!!!!! Did I win?? I tallied up the votes and I think its decided, Melbourne wins in a landfall vote. Mel 6 vs SD 3, sorry CHRIS!
+landscaperben Classic indeed! The viewers get to decide.. so everybody.. who won? Melbourne or San Diego?

We get our fresh meats from SUPERMARKETS !! Safeway, lucky... etc....
Nice! I'm sure it's tasty!
San Diego 8 vs Melbourne 6, San Diego with the lead. Who wants to see more video's like this?
It's kind of apples and oranges. It sounds like Melbourne is a great place to vacation, but San Diego is a great place to live for convenience and proximity to similar attractions and sites in Melbourne. It made me sad when he thought Walgreens (even the fancy one in SF) was a supermarket.

Melbourne is also a great place to live - it did win most liveable city in the world numerous times in a row.
Melb'n.
we're coffee snobs and we throw our food in your face. San Diego for the win.
1 vote San Diego!
I was enjoying this until he said he goes for Melbourne City
Don't worry I'm not that keen
So where u in Melbourne because this is disappointing as I never saw no clog of u travelling around Melbourne and I agree Melbourne is the best city to travel to its amazing ..ok Chris where's the pics of u in Melbourne
+larraine tuckerman Sounds like you found it... Stay tuned.. I've got more Melbourne videos coming up!
Sydney
100% Melbourne over San Diego
Looks like Tofer is the judge..... 🙂
Tophers always the judge.

There's always competition between Sydney and Melbourne. It's just a thing that we do as Melbournians!
This is always a defence Sydneysiders use, probably because they know they lose the debate between the two ;)
