    Another first-class video. The last time I removed valves from a head, the small locking elements at the top of the valve were called 'collets'. The pitting on the face of the exhaust valve I would say is material and probably will not grind out with simple lapping. I suggest you get the valves machined to reface the contact surface. While you are doing this, I suggest you get the valves lapped in by a professional. Getting a great seal between the valve and seat is very important as it will directly affect compression and engine power. Don't forget, a great way to test the effectiveness of the valve seal is to fill the combustion chamber with petrol and over a few hours see if it leaks. No leak, great seal. Finally, it's important you check the heads for flatness. As they are non-iron, during the process of removal, warping of the head is not uncommon. If they have warped, they may need skimming. I love the fact you are busy collecting every tool ever made relating to engine rebuilding. By the time the engine is back in the car, you will need another garage for all the tools you have collected.

      Hello Lester, I really appreciate the detailed comment. You are the main reason I’m taking these heads to the machine shop this week to see what they can do with them. When I was trying to do a leak down test on this engine is seemed like every valve was leaking, now that I have seen the deposit infested valves I’m shocked they sealed at all.

      @@ManinaGarage That's a smart move and when all is done, a very worthy investment. I hope the machine shop can reface the valves and save you some money. Good luck.
      In your video, I thought it was super interesting how you walked through the history of the components Porsche had used over the years regards pistons and bore sleeves. I suspect Nikasil was one of the best solutions.

    The valve retainers are valve collets . the tool you are using is a valve spring compressor but your using it upside down . The wrist pin is in fact a gudgeon pin and the little end is opposite the big end . Aluminum the American pronunciation sounds odd from a fellow English man , but you make good videos .

    • @ManinaGarage
      @ManinaGarage  3 года назад

      Hello Andrew, The Aluminum/Aluminium thing and a whole host of other words are leading triggers for comments on this channel ;) To give you an example of what it's like from this side, I mentioned "Gudgeon Pin" to a couple of machine shops around town, they looked at me like I had three heads :0 . I personally want to call the valve collets "Valve Collets". Sometimes you need to talk like the Romans if you want to get anything done in Rome :)
      With the valve spring compressor are you saying that the handle I turn should be onto the Valve side? Not the spring side?
      Thank you for watching!

    Ahh, valve springs, finally something I know a little bit about, spent 40 years making springs and part of that was making racing valve springs for the likes of Roush racing and others , they claim the cone shape are best, most auto companies use what is know as beehive type. Most racing valve springs are a three spring assembly, a spring inside a spring inside another spring

    • @ManinaGarage
      @ManinaGarage  3 года назад

      A spring, inside a spring, inside a spring 😫 How do get those buggers off! According to the google images I think the springs on this Porsche look like the beehive style? Did you guys ever try the Cryoheat treatment on those springs? Apparently it does great things for them?? Great to hear from you Don, I hope you have an epic weekend. 🤘😎

    • @donesper2070
      @donesper2070 3 года назад

      @@ManinaGarage Same way you did it, valve springs are made from chrome silicon or chrome vanadium wire and are shot peened for surface hardness, beehive springs are shaped like a beehive or barrel, smaller on the ends bigger in the middle, I've been out of valve spring making for many years since I moved from Detroit to NC where gun springs and knife springs are much more in demand,

    Not sure if you mentioned this in an earlier video, but what was wrong with the motor to necessitate rebuilding in the first place?

    • @Fred82ndAbn
      @Fred82ndAbn 3 года назад +1

      Finn will correct me if I'm wrong for sure but having watched from the begining, he thought it was a bad IMS but in my opinion, it was just worn timing chain pads. Camshaft deviation must've been really off and rough running with maybe some chatter. Upon disassembly he found that the chain pads specially on the camshaft solenoid almost wore through to the aluminum. He actually found some shavings from that on the pan, not much though as well as lots of plastic debris from the pads. The rest of the engine looks in really good condition for the miles IMHO.

      Hello Michael, I bought the car pre-broken from a young guy in Orange County 30 weeks ago. He said it started running really rough, the european specialist he took it to charged him $800 to say that it would cost more for them to diagnose it properly, he choose to sell it on craiglist to get rid of it. I have always wanted to know more about cars, this was the baptism of fire I was looking for. I'm holding the Mileage number till the end. If I can get this thing to run, it's going to blow peoples minds. Thank you for watching 🤘 😎
