Marlon Brando wasn't Italian. His ancestry was a mix of German, Dutch, English and Irish. He died in 2004 at the age of 80.
Lenny Montana, the actor who played Luca Brasi, was in awe of Marlon Brando, and was very nervous about performing with him. Francis Ford Coppola saw Montana practicing his lines before his scene with Brando and decided to shoot it and include it in the film. The wooden, stumbling performance when they were on screen together was also caused by nerves, and again, Coppola decided to leave it in rather than re-shoot it.
That Sonny let his thoughts slip out in the first meeting with Solozzo is significant. Solozzo learned that Sonny was in favor of the deal even though Vito against it. Solozzo figured if he could eliminate Vito, he could make a deal with Sonny. This set the whole chain of events in motion.
Remember that the movie was set in the days before cell phones and portable radios. They didn't even have answering machines. That's why Michael learned about his father being shot from a newspaper headline.
John Cazale, who played Fredo, died at the age of 42. He was in only five movies: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather: Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter. All five were nominated for the Academy Award for best picture. Cazale was nominated for best supporting actor for his role in Dog Day Afternoon, which also starred Al Pacino. He had a lot of success in a short career.
That scene at the end with the door closing is one of the greatest final shots in movie history. The door closed on her both literally and figuratively.

Also, back then newspapers had numerous different editions printed throughout the day (at least three regularly scheduled editions throughout the day, sometimes more) , especially in big cities like New York. And if something really big happened in the middle of the day like a huge crime boss being gunned down, the papers could have an additional edition on the streets within a couple of hours. That's what the "EXTRA!" that the corner newsboys are always yelling in old movies means: and extra, additional edition of the paper featuring really big, breaking news.

Cazale was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1977 and died in March 1978, during his illness he was cared for by his girlfriend who was there with him until the end. Pacino, who was a long-time friend of Cazale from their days on the stage in New York, had this to say about the care she took of him - "I've hardly ever seen a person so devoted to someone who is falling away like John was. To see her in that act of love for this man was overwhelming."
Cazale's girlfriend was Meryl Streep, they had been together for over three years before his death.

Some related trivia...Moe Green was the name they gave to real life Bugsy Siegel, the Jewish gangster who basically invented Las Vegas and yes was shot in the eye. Johnny Fontaine was in effect Frank Sinatra and that war movie that he had to claimed he did not even had to act was "From Here to Eternity" where Frank a New Jersey grandson of an immigrant played Angelo Maggio a New Jersey grandson of an Italian immigrant..Sinatra won an academy award for his performance. The band that Johnny Fontaine was released from was taken also from Sinatra who was released from the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, which supposedly in real life a mobster shoved a gun down Dorsey's throat and Frank was let go for a single dollar....more real life trivia in Part II if you do a reaction on it

I think the reason that Michael became an even more ruthless Don than his father had to do with his combat experience in WWII. As a Marine, Michael almost certainly would have fought the Japanese in the Pacific theatre. Japanese soldiers would almost always fight fanatically to the death, and could not be negotiated with. I believe Michael carried that memory with him when he took over the family. I hope you also react to 'The Godfather II,' which is also a fantastic movie - really two movies in one.

In the timeframe that this story takes place there were newspapers that would print special editions later in the day if something noteworthy happened. Since no one had cellphones back then, and Michael did not associate with his family, it makes sense that the first time he'd hear about his dad being shot is by seeing a newspaper headline. If you remember, he was introducing Kay at the wedding, so that tells us he hasn't been around much. "I wanted him to be happy with...what was her name?" haha.

20:45 It wasn't really a blackmail. Sure, Michael threatened him should the father sell him out, but by giving the father his name he gave the father the opportunity to threaten him as well. While he didn't give the father much of a choice in that regard, it was still a big sign of mutual respect.
I think he did that to make sure that when the real question came (to meet the daughter) the father would in fact NOT feel threatened, even if there was a guy with a lupara sitting behind Michael.

Don't go thinking Vito Corleone somehow reformed himself and became a peace-loving sage at the end of the movie. He retired and turned the day-to-day running of the family business over to Michael, but he never forgot, or forgave what they did to him, to Sonny, and tried to do to Michael in Italy. He was fully aware of what Michael's plan to wipe out the heads of the Five Families, and was probably intimately involved in the planning of it, despite the oath he took on the souls of his grandchildren that he would not be the one to disturb the peace
(Speaking of his grandchildren, the little baby being baptized in the final scene is played by Frances Ford Coppola infant daughter Sophia. Many Years later, Sophia Coppola would play another of Vito's grandchildren, Michael's daughter Mary in Godfather III. Most critics tend to prefer her performance here.)
(And yes, it is a baptism, not a christening in that scene, the Baptism is the one where a close family member or friend is appointed "Godfather" to the child and thereby renounces evil and accepts Jesus on the baby's behalf. The Godfather is then supposedly obligated to have some vague responsibility to look after his Godchild's development, especially spiritual (i.e. make sure the kid is attending church and receiving the rest of the Chruch's Seven Sacraments after baptism) Thus the metaphor of the "Godfather" looking after his "Family" and "Neighborhood" (i.e. Territory), both making sure their actual needs and well-being are tended to, but also that they don't stray from the path.)

Coppola had a lot of trouble making this film. The book was a huge best seller and everybody was anticipating a movie version. Coppola was not well known and the studio wanted a big name to direct but Mario Puzzo, author of the novel, liked Coppola and thought he really understood the Italian heritage. Coppola had to fight with the studio to cast who he wanted. Pacino was an unknown and the studio wanted James Caan (Sonny) to play the role. A screen test of Pacino doing the restaurant scene with his eyes darting back and forth convinced them otherwise.
Coppola and Puzzob wanted Brando but the studio said absolutely not. He was notorious at that point for causing trouble on movie sets. Coppola wouldn't relent. The studio head said, ok, but with three conditions: Brando had to do a screen test, he had to put up a $1 million bond guaranteeing he wouldn't cause delays, and he had to work for free. Coppola knew that was impossible but at least it wasn't a NO. He sent Brando the script and went to meet him. Brando spread some dark dye in his hair, played around with some appetizers on the table and transformed into The Godfather. Coppola took some film and showed it to the studio heads and they forgot about the other two demands.
Coppola event fought to have his daughter play Connie and his father write music for the score. At that point he thought he was going to get fired every day anyway, so he just kept pushing for what he wanted.

The theme of this movie is Michael becoming the Godfather. The sequel is a contrast between Michael and Vito and how they are very different men. We see Vito’s story and Michael’s story in parallel, where Michael faces new powerful enemies, new betrayals. And he makes new friends along the way. 😉

Don Corleone was sad that it was Michael who killed the cop because he wanted more for him than the family business. Michael was the only one who had a chance outside. that's the way the book described it....

Marlon Brando wasn't Italian. He was actually of German decent; his real name was Brandau Brando was a simplification, perhaps because people mispronounced it, or maybe there was anti German prejudice since he started his career shortly after World War II.

Honestly, I randomly came across your reaction and you ACTUALLY paid attention even though you remarked that you barely paid it any mind the first time you saw it... Most times, people who watch this film have the attention span of a 6 year old and ask questions to details that were so prominent in the film it drives me crazy... and you did all that despite this film prolly not being your "type" of movie you'd normally watch... Which means despite your earlier aversion to this movie (from what you say it's probably more of your husband's kinda film) you actually vested enough interest to pay attention to the story and it's details, which is much appreciated...to me, this is one of the greatest films EVER...
