  • Gold is a safe-haven asset at the heart of a huge trade. Some of its production escapes the controls put in place by governments, with higher risks of pollution, financing of armed groups or human rights violations. According to a new study, hundreds of tonnes of gold are smuggled out of Africa every year, with an estimated value of several billion dollars. The overwhelming majority of this gold transits through the United Arab Emirates.
