I been doing tech work 27 yrs this guy's deserves an damn award...u goes don't understand the knowledge this mane has ...it's one of a kind.. his understandibg of electrical theory is spot on...
Direct strike it attacked the bridge diffently and so-239...direct hv short ..and it was heavy current arch over ... I want u to know how much I appreciate you and what you do I admire you in such a way.. I am a technician and I think I'm extremely good at what I do .. but when I watch what you do,and how your mind works .. it waters my eyes because it's amazing to see someone else have the pure passion in what they do... Your work speaks volumes.. in who you are as a technician and how you do things is ..so on point !! .... Wow .... Humbling...
I hope you have a good ground system now! This guy is better than I. I do mostly ham and commercial radio repair for 30 years and I don't repair radios with lightning damage. I'm glad your radio is working well.
Mike a beautiful looking radio. An outstanding restoration job. Thank you for sharing your knowledge your techniques, and the years of wisdom you have at restoring CB radios. Or anything else electronic. Thank you for sharing Mike and thank you for your time and educating us all. Looking forward to the next video. Joel
Nice video, I used to repair farm alarms that got struck by lightning all the time. Their probes were buried under ground and any lightning strikes within miles would take these things out. They were supposed to set off an alarm when someone would come up the lane. I had to replace all the transistors and they worked fine.
Love these particular model base radios, and a proud owner of more than one. Very neat video, learn something new every time I watch your videos Mike ! I'll be in touch soon I hope, got life throwing me things have to deal with...
I've never had the pleasure of seeing a trs 1400. But I've always admired them in picture. A great look as far as the design goes. I've never heard one on air, but suspect their nice sounding rigs. I hope to hear this one sometime in the future (DX.) Another excellent job Mike. Keep saving the oldies. 73's
I love you quality of repairs, quality all the time. If I did not live in Norway, I would send me all my antic cb radios to you for a fixup. Thank's for all Your Nice vid's. The best from LB1NH Arild in Oslo Norway.
He is in a special class of technician that is becoming much rarer. If I was flush with cash, I'd send him regular work myself, as I'd have a decent collection of radios and would get the real collectable "for repair, or not working" sets off of eBay etc and send them to him
This is why you always ground an antenna, bond it your utility ground and install a lightning arrestor before it enters your house. Not only is it a good idea, it is all REQUIRED by NEC.
Yes it will change inductance capasatance if it's not flat and exact ...what a smart dude..this guy.mis real deal !!! Love it Mike !!! Justin Ruth Oklahoma
What a nice looking radio. I never heard of the Challenger brand of CB radios but I had seen one of these I think I would have bought one just on looks alone.
I've never seen one of those radios before, they didn't get in to the uk. i do like the older designs :-D. I used to repair c.b radios for most of the uk. Some were stone dead with lots of semiconductors just waving the white flag (i surrender). People do some evil things to radios :-(. Really nice to see someone keeping c.b alive :-D
Looks like the power connector took the brunt of it and the trace acted as a fuse link. I am pretty surprised that the diodes on that board survived though. You just never know with lightning strikes. Good stuff.
Does anyone know what this radio would be worth? I'm trying to find a value on it because I have one that needs to be sold but I can't find anything anywhere! I have no idea! I know it would depend on condition, but is there a range from broken to perfect? Anything would be helpful! Thanks!
hey mike i have very low signals on ssb on my superstar 3900...the audio seems to be oke.tried to compensate with the vr but thats not it,also changed d12......maybe you can point me in the right direction??????
I have one of these sitting on the shelf. It needs new caps for the power supply, but I can't figure out which ones to replace them with! Mind sharing the specs on that cap please?
Mike I have a tram titan 1 with no RX. Just put a new set of tubes in it and nothing. Any way I can contact You? I got it super cheap and have no problem putting some money into it to get it working 100%.
Awesome repair job! I also appreciate the technique that you utilized to repair/reconstruct the SWR circuit board. I must ask... did any of the diodes need to be replaced on the SWR board?
Mike please clear something up for us. @15:20 you discuss replacing an fet in the agc circuit to remove the constant 7+ volts on the agc meter circuit. Then @57:10 you show the same fet as being responsible for a 2+ volt error in the same circuit. Does this mean that your replacement fet was leaky or have you remembered something wrongly. Atm it looks confusing to me. Very interesting video thanks.
It takes amps to do damage like that (boil and vaporize metal), I think the voltage was probably reduced dramatically by lead resistance. I really can't imagine what that must have sounded and smelled like just after the bang. This really illustrates again why lightning protection is so important in antennas.
This is an attractive looking radio. But it sort of looks like a thinner edition of the Siltronix, so.... Looking at all these rice boxes (go ahead, report me..) Two things come into my mind; 1) I want my World Radio Labs 300 Xmitter (w/11 meters..) 2) and I want mt National HRO 60 and my R-392 Back.....
Yup: If I got fed GIGA VOLTS that act would make my GIGA HURT"S too like so many failed parts in this radio, it might just give me GIGA OHMS too :-) :-) Just having fun with so much GIGA !!! Just had to have some fun with words !! John Bellas KC2UVN
A Nuvister vacuum tube would have made a better receive pre amp you know those tiny vacuum tube valves that are for battery operation should work don't you think, Why can't UNIDEN take a leaf out of TEN-TEC's book and replace all of the parts of a transceiver with DSP processing and do all processing using maths and trigonometry and using Tayloe mixers for transmit and receive, if the guys and girls in Tennessee can do it right why not UNIDEN.
+DAVID GREGORY KERR Why don't they use them??? Because it cost to much. These are built to to a price point and if they can save a 1/100 of a cent they will.
That is not a 'direct hit'..... When you have a direct hit, radios look a lot like the inside of a coal-stove LOL ! But yeah, even an indirect overload can do a lot of damage..pity.... Paddy PS you shouldn't heat epoxy up in degrees Frankenstein. Proper quality epoxy wants heatin' up in Celsius !
I use the "Dual standard" epoxy which (within certain limits) will work with F or C. I always use this nowadays following several embarrassing mistakes.
i had a direct hit it vaporized 20 ft of my antenna went down the coax to the backif my antenna tuner vaporized the ceramic insulator and did absolutly nothing to the radio that was connected you never know what lightning will do
It’s a nice looking radio but rare. There’s a reason for that they are junk. Had one and sold it quickly. A friend who is a expert tech said to me...ever wonder why it’s rare? Because people figured out they were junk.

This radio now works unbelievable. The reports I get are beyond expectations. Thanks a bunch.
I hope you have a good ground system now!

I knew someone back in the 90's who had one of these. Not your everyday radio. Great to see it was a light hit which is rare. Great job!

Nice looking radio and good work and detection work fixing it. Nice job.

Good job Mike. I hate working on radios hit by lightning. Never know what you will find.
You sure know your stuff Mike. Glad I found this channel.
That's a beautiful CB.
Your talent and knowledge always amazes me. Great video.
What a nice looking radio. I never heard of the Challenger brand of CB radios but I had seen one of these I think I would have bought one just on looks alone.
Another great and informative video! Other than the damage, that radio seems to be in very nice condition.
I have never seen one of these in person but it is a nice looking radio.
Miks radio repar the vintage trs
Challenger 1400 AM Ssb bass station is awesome
That is a nice looking old radio. If it were mine I would spend the time to fix it.
I've seen those recieve rights on scanners called busy lights before
I've never seen one of those radios before, they didn't get in to the uk.
i do like the older designs :-D.

DO you or does any buddy know how to improve the NB circuit in the 858 chassis radio .. seems like it's pretty large should work better

A good repair Mike...
NICE Base Station :)
hey mike i have very low signals on ssb on my superstar 3900...the audio seems to be oke.tried to compensate with the vr but thats not it,also changed d12......maybe you can point me in the right direction??????
I heard you talk about an electronics course. Have you done this or going to? I am looking forward to this.
I have one of these sitting on the shelf. It needs new caps for the power supply, but I can't figure out which ones to replace them with! Mind sharing the specs on that cap please?
Is that glue the same type that causes corrosion on the components?
Mike I have a tram titan 1 with no RX. Just put a new set of tubes in it and nothing. Any way I can contact You? I got it super cheap and have no problem putting some money into it to get it working 100%.
Awesome repair job! I also appreciate the technique that you utilized to repair/reconstruct the SWR circuit board. I must ask... did any of the diodes need to be replaced on the SWR board?

Diodes on the SWR bridge board were fine.
Mike please clear something up for us.

Have no idea. Radio has been long ago sent back to the customer. Probably misspoke a voltage level.
It takes amps to do damage like that (boil and vaporize metal), I think the voltage was probably reduced dramatically by lead resistance. It would be nice if someone had a pallet of Chipswitches hanging around.
I had a radio hit by lightening. A Royce 23 channel base station. So thats what the bolt did to it, it was fried garbage it went.
Looks like a dual speaker set-up on the cover.
Since the radio is a 8 Ohm system - how are the 2 speakers wired in series or parallel and are the speakers 4,8, or 16 Ohms?
i had a fet checked on peak tester, said it was a transistor with 9997 gain, so i have seen that one before,,,
Doesn't this have speech processing ...I believe it does
Miks radio repar cb has ssb do you need a license
No license is required for ssb or am mode on citizens band radio in the u.s.

If the device is heated within the US borders, it's ok...lol

You do know after you showed the tone you can shut it off right? I cannot continue to watch due to that tone.
It’s a nice looking radio but rare. There’s a reason for that they are junk. Had one and sold it quickly.
A friend who is a expert tech said to me...ever wonder why it’s rare? Because people figured out they were junk.
Or maybe not as many were made as you think and they really are rare.
That too.
i hate broken slugs i fell you pain
You could turn down the 1k tone while talking...please.
Turn the Sig gen off... BBBBeeeeeeeeeeeeee .
Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
I can't hear you.
God turn that off !!!!!!!!
Unwatchable due to the continuous tone in the audio.
