IT CAN’T STOP RAINING! (Muddy fields, sheep health and trying to a dry spot for the highland cattle)

- A week of farm life at Dale farm,
It is mostly raining but the first visible sunrise for ten days was a beautiful and most welcome sight !! We are moving the cows ring feeders because the area has become flooded, and the sheep need their vaccines and a foot bath before lambing!
Anytime you can get a job done where nobody cries and nobody shouts deserves a celebration!
Yes!! Someone who understands!

Hi Kim! Yeah it’s depressing we definitely need a break now from the gloom and miserable conditions!! It’s been a better day today here at least but I’m feeling a lot of grief and been crying xx
As you move the sheep and cattle to new fields you should immediately overseed the just eaten field with new grass seed and take advantage of the wet conditions which will quickly germinate the seed. Turn a negative into a positive. You will need to use an ATV with a broadcast spreader - anything heavier will damage the land. While the field is resting the new seed will take off.

@@DaleFarm best to use some multi species seed (including clover) which will be of great benefit to the health of the animals adding diversity to their diet. Whatever seed you use, you will see a noticeable difference in the vigor and density of the growth in the over seeded fields this summer.

take heart that you are not being singled out for such wet conditions .........just as sloppy here .........lovely and mild here all week ......at this time of the year its amazing what a few dry days can do ....... i do not remember the ground as wet in mid march ever.......you are doing well to have made so much feed last summer ..........might all be wanted yet ..

@@DaleFarm every body i talk to here is fed up with the weather ........its even turned cold here today ....got slurry out this week , conditions more like jan than late march .......looks like we are going to have plenty of cold rain this week ........ have silage for another month or so , lots around here are out ....... april and may in 83 were the worst i ever saw ......but we got a very dry summer after ...!
All that rain can be truly miserable. We have had days of it here. The bit of sun you had was beautiful and the last frame with the Highlands on the hill was so peaceful. The sheep look and I hope the weather moderates for you and the Moms to be coming soon. The daffodils are so cheerful. Take good care.

You both did a very necessary and vital long day's work with the vaccination, footpath etc. All these jobs sure are a pita to do but afterwards its a good feeling knowing that you're doing everything you can to keep your livestock healthy. Well done. Hope the rain clears and lets you get some pasture growth. Constant never ending rain and no sunlight certainly does inhibit grass growth. My Dad a used to refer to a season of unending rain as a "wet drought" because without the sunshine no grass could grow. Weather extremes sure are the longtime curse for farming. Top work Joanna. Well I hopped I’d come back to nice dry weather… did I buggery 🤣🤦♂. Looks like rain for a few weeks yet so a late summer turnout for us. Luckily we’ve plenty of hay still left!

@@DaleFarm hi the weather is yuk in so many places . My sister lives in Missouri and it rained all last week . She didn't go out at all . We have another wind storm just wind no moisture .it's the dryest 🌼 🌱 spring I know of .

Quite a colorful flock of sheep with all the paint color codes. Brings a smile when I see that. Now, all the rain and saturated ground is a problem to be sure, but does it bring some good like drowning the moles right out of their tunnels? Or do the moles just head for high ground?
The moles i am not sure how it affects them!! Maybe they are undeterred!!
Got through the Hepta-Vac & Footbath & that bloody flat tyre on the Muck Clearing Truck !!! So Labour-Intensive is Farming Work and nice to see the Highlands getting their Hay after the Flooding of the Feeding Ring. That Sunrise & the Highlands getting their Feed So Idyllic & You deserve that Beer being very confident hard-working Farmers & that Slushy Muddy Shite Weather it will end !!! Miserable weather again, but you've been kept busy with the different treatments for your sheep. At least the job is done and it's peace of mind knowing you have given them the best care possible. Hopefully the weather will change in time for the lambing...😃👍🏻

Things here aren’t much better, started some things in my greenhouse but next weeks temperatures are going to make sure nothing gets going.
The cat dug up my seed tray and peed in it! And then something else ate my seedlings so a challenging start haha

Hi Joanna and Nick, I was hoping for some better weather in your area, but you are not that lucky. The fields are green so just a few sunny days would be grateful. You completed the last jobs before lambing and your dad would be proud of you for a job well done. I like the way you keep each lambing group separated by how many they are having. The Hylands all looking good and they are so suited to their new area, hilly and rocky. Nick has a good job to fix the tyre on the muck trailer and I hope you have a spare he can change out. Hi Chris , it’s still mostly rainy , we had some sunshine yesterday but it was so windy, a cold wind quite disruptive! Definitely not feeling like spring on the whole it’s still winter

I now live in 'sheep country' in Mid Wales and can look into the fields and know roughly whereabouts the farmers are at in their annual cycle - all thanks to the Dale Farm videos. Everything is completely sodden here as well.

A lot of work for one day Joanna ! We didn't get hoof rot until they came back from pasture in the fall. Sheep look good their coats are perfect for shedding rain !

Hi Jo, our blackthorn(sloe buses) are coming into blossom which usually means cold, dry weather, it's known as the "blackthorn winter" so hopefully the rain will take a hike and give us all a break. @@DaleFarm I used to help my brother in law at lambing time he-lambed about 800 black faced ewes , I always love watching the video’s
7°c and above and grass will grow, so I have been told by a gardener /ex farmer. We all need a break from this horrible weather 😫
