@@default9314 Pro players are not magically unbeatable gods. I have gone up against my fare share of them on DB in many formats, my friends have played and won against some of them at YCS as well as made top 4 at YCS's. They also have a lot of connections that give them really good testing partners and list cooking potentials. But again they are not these unbeatable gods, they will fall to variance just as much as you and me. I also keep hearing that board breaker maliss is the deck but from what I have seen of the few events there are at this time of the year it has yet to post results over FS Ryzeal. But the key thing is during many other point in the game every match I and my testing group could have pinpointed a bunch of mistakes that we did that lead to our loss, but ever since snake-eye came up its been a high-roll fiesta. 90% of your games are decided before the game even starts, the other 5% you both bricked and its a competition to see who unbricks first and can play through the handtraps in the opponents hand, realistically saying even 5% of your games are real game might be too much. And its not like I'm exaggerating go over ycs replays of the past year and tell me this doesn't happen over and over and over again. If the reason I lost games was because I'm bad I can guarantee you I would still be playing because that's what I want. But if I'm loosing games to the insane power creep sate of the game that the games foundations cannot handle in a realiable/fun state then that's a whole other thing. Its not even just loosing, because when you win because you won a handtrap war with your opponents it also feels like shit. You feel good when you completely cook your opponent and when you outplay them. Winning because you had more handtraps feels like nothing at all.
The sad truth about Yugioh is that the playerbase has become so delusional that they’re convinced everything is okay and anyone who disagrees with them is either bad at the game or a budget player.
Honestly just hope they keep doing more PRB, I came in late to the scene and that helped so much on getting cards that I needed for various decks I wanted to try
Used to collect pokemon and not play it because it was not as fun to me. It might be because i’m a one piece super fan but this game is so fun, even losing i end up with a smile sometimes. And the OPTCG Community is so happy, much love all around.
As someone who tried playing in an unofficial buddy battle tournament. That format is not easy to get into, there are so many niche card interactions that cause rulings nightmares.
I agree that the rulings can be quite a mess, but it's meant much more as a casual fun option before anything else. So those niche issues can make for fun set ups with a friend. But you're def right and a ruling guide for the format would help
The buddy battles are definitely for more experienced players I’d say, but with the right people to teach you it’s fairly easy to get the main idea of the game
Could you do a video or two on the digimon TCG? I find it so interesting the points you made about One Piece's success and Bandai listening to players but I don't feel or see the same for digimon (not meeting supply/demand of product, low player caps for regionals and beyond, weak reprint practices, etc.)
As a long-term OP player, my only worry with the game is the lack of formats/rotation of cards. Obviously nobody likes when their cards they paid for rotate out or get banned, but Bandai anime card games always seem to struggle with power creep and unintended combos of cards. It feels like with every set certain decks like Enel keep getting "support" by the mere existence of new yellow cards. Besides that, my favorite tcg to date.
I know this is meant more to give the OPTCG it's flowers but, I would say that the design decisions behind the game are also not a fluke. If you are new to the game, please do not feel bad about being drawn to wanting to play some of the pricier colors in Black, Yellow and Purple. They are the best colors at the moment for a reason. I do not think that they will ever be weak as the design team HEAVILY favors these colors, no matter the set or format, they will always be relevant. (Bandai / Cardas plz give colors to handle black that don't require you to also be in black 🥲)
Red is up there too. Dominated the game early and then had RP Law. They were stuck in the wilderness for a while but are back now. I'd say Bandai loves Red a bit more than Purple, tbh. Blue does fine enough and I'm convinced Bandai hates green. Maybe because it's the color of grass, something they never want their players to touch?
I honestly don't think there's a best color, especially considering you didn't mention Blue, which has the best deck in Doflamingo, and Red, which has two pretty competitive decks right now at opposite ends of the spectrum with Shanks and Zoro. Even Green sometimes sneaks into a top 8 off Perona or Bonney.
Ive only just recently started playing OPTCG. My local community is as accommodating and friendly as one could ask for. It'll also help me make new friends when I move this year.
Honestly why I like Pokémon. It’s due to the fact that good cards have different rarities to make them easier to access and cheaper while having a rarer alt art
This video is very well made. Not only because i greatly agree with the main thesis of the vid 😂 but also becaue ive seen your other videos where you say things like you dont like the trigger system and such, but now that youve seen the game develop your view has chaged too and thats cook to see. And the structure was fire as always
op was my first card game and overall it's been a great experience. everything that was a major complaint at this time last year has been dealt with, and I'm excited to see what another year with this game looks like.
I’m someone who’s been looking into playing OP for a while. My main concern is the competitive integrity amongst players. I’ve seen many players online speak about their issues with people cheating either in-person and/or online events. And even during prerelease events at their locals!
I tapped out of Yugioh for a bit and ended up not really returning because of how insane the price is to keep up with the game is. Recently I picked up Pokemon with a friend and started playing One Piece and it reinvigorated my love for these games!
Welp, the most ironic part is that YGO in OCG is very accessible. Still don't exactly sure why TCG has such a drastically different market strat and pricing. The price difference is several times different nowadays i.e, I got competitive + high rarity M∀LICE deck with side deck and whole lot of strong tech options/staples included for 250 USD while some Maliss deck along with just side deck in TCG cost 1000 USD. In OCG there is also Duelmasters which I dare to say is the inspiration of the model OP TCG (also most of Bandai recent card games) used in many aspects but has been run in JP for 22 years strong now as competition for OP to catch up at first. I think they did it popularity wise as so many people play it be it already large OP fans or tcg players.
The void months aside where Bandai heavily undersupplied the market and scalpers went completely nuts on the pricing it's really a cheap game to hop into. now that the prices and supply mostly stabilized it's really easy to pick up a few boosters of the latest set
TL;DR: Good casual outlet with good pricing and balance. (In my opinion) Been a competitive Pokemon player for a long time now (8 1/2 years) and I've been really enjoying One Piece as a more casual outlet that lets me play pretty much anything and have the possibility of doing well with it, something Pokemon isn't exactly known for. (Sorry Lake Spirit/Birb players) Additionally, it's comparatively not expensive, which is a large part of why I can't play other card games. The balancing of the game is also fairly well done, with some decks being better than others but next to no decks being completely unplayable. Overall, the game is very well put together, and it's the first time in a long time I've seen a card game survive the honeymoon phase
Hi Monkey! I love your videos! But I would like to ask, if you feel like it, please finish your Force of Will documentary! It was incredible. I always watch many of your videos, but that one was truly interesting. I know it may not get many views, so I wont bug you about it. Just a wish from a fan. Oh, if you can, also give a second chance to the digimon tcg too! Cheers!
You can definitely tell what companies are just greedy and doesn't care for their fans. I won't say which one because I'm one of those fans but Bandai kicks ass with One Piece card game ngl.
This is interesting. I saw a ton of glazing for Elestrals, but big surprise, those people were being paid to push it, and after they stopped getting paid, I haven’t seen a peep about the game. Now, Bandai is obviously not sponsoring this video, yet we see content creators from other games actively praising it. The funniest part is, OP still has major issues and most of it being related to product and minimal communication, yet, compared to companies like Konami, it makes them look like geniuses who share every minute detail.
There are still channels that cover Elestrals and their first big in person tournament sold out in just a few minutes. The community for the game is holding strong and growing slowly every day because it's so accessible with its free client and free weekly online locals so everyone can participate even if they don't have a physical locals to attend.
DragonBall Fusion World is doing same thing as One Piece. Probably Dragon Ball Fusion world is even more appealing to casual players, since it is simpler to compete and is kinda more frenetic. Dragon Ball Fusion World even have an official client to new players try the game online. But, I agree with your general thought. Great video!
Started playing OPTCG this year because Magic has decided to become Fortnite, and was honestly blown away by it. I've played a shitton of card games, but this one may be the most complex and satisfying of them all.
i play one piece as a side game my main game is Cardfight Vanguard and you said this better than i ever could @ 4:54 ive been playing Vanguard for 10 years and while the format is great the accessibility isn't. i haven't recommend the game for a long time and it makes me sad that being said i have recommended OP and i do love how accessible it is. i also wish the scalpers and vendors would chill tf out on the prices of the TD's and product buyout at Walmart's Targets etc i haven't been able to find a blister since op04 lol
Mixed. Gameplay seems like a faster version of one piece which was neat, but it seemed like a bad idea to release it in the current market alongside their other dragonball games
@@MonkeyFightTCG agreed! And for Dragon Ball as a franchise, I see more diversity in MASTERS comparing to OP - Im my eyes it was a pretty stupid idea to launch Fusion World with the exact same idea in mind to create a TCG that is easier to get into. OP did that already for the same audience. It just led into splitting the TCG DB Fans as a franchise - It is a mess currently, in my eyes
I've been playing since Super Pre-release and I've noticed every time I'm playing tournaments or go to pre release events when I speak to other players a lot of them have gotten into the game in the past 6 months. Great to see the game is growing and is healthy.
@@GuilhermeDiGiorgiThe only real issue I see is the lack of global (Eastern) appeal. There have been a bunch of smaller issues, but nothing crippling.
well I don't think one piece is finishing in the next 5 years. we still have a few more gigantic arcs to get through and then the anime goes on for a bit longer. If this game manages to go for 5 years at the pace it's currently at, it has the potential to become a mainstay. But that's absurdly hard to do so who knows?
The EU singles prices are even lower than what you have in the US. I.E at the moment you can buy all the cards for a Blackbeard deck, including Laboon, for around 100-110 euros
My only major complaint is withhow bandai never considers to release an english version in asian countries. Most do not have japanese as their secondary language. Also in our country distribution of card prizes are on borderline corrupted where the organizers keep the cards themselves.
I have a question : does OP have set rotation. Reprinting old card with new artwork can cause game lisibility problem. If after 2 years, Luffy have 5 version with two different pictures each, and 4 versions with one picture. That is 14 different pictures of luffy. That means if the opponent plays a impopular luffy, you will have to pick it up to make sure it is the correct Luffy. Very minor issue ofc, but notable nonetheless.
OPTCG currently doesn't have set rotation, but there is a system in place that could indicate set rotation in the future. Each card has a little devil fruit on the bottom right, with sets 1-4 having a 1, sets 5-8 having a 2, and sets 9-10 (and presumably 11&12 when they are released) having a 3. If I had to make an assumption, this will most likely be used for rotation, but it could also be a failsafe by Bandai in order to implement a rotation if needed. Also, certain named characters definitely have more cards than others, but the art and card color typically make them distinct enough that it's never really been a real issue imo.
MtG and Yu-Gi-Oh absolutely deserve to go under due to negligence, and incompetent handling of their games. I'd rather the new top 3 be Pokemon, One Piece, and Duel Masters.
Canada still has major stock issues :(( It’s still nearly 200 for a regular booster box (only the most recent one) and i haven’t even seen a PRB01 pack or box at all. super upsetting cuz i’m trying to buy but there’s nothing to get
I Really hope Bandai do like Pokemon TCG. Plenty of alternate art. A clear rarity system. A set rotation of 2-3 years. Bandai should focus on One Piece. 🤞
2 years dont mean much for a card game successful tho not even 5 years mean nothing but 10 years is where a card game truly established they are here to stay
Game isnt a fluke, but I think it very much is just doing barely better things then other games so it goes up by default. Atleast ATM because of how bad YGO and Magic are messing up. Still power creep feels very flood like. It might not be set to set but by 2 sets you can delete half of the decks that were playable and that is on mid to lower tiers. High tier deck you maybe change 1. Its very stale. Starter decks in Europe are still above MSRP but mostly not 40$. Game itself is good, but pricing, scalping and availability are still problems when you look outside and on the inside there is power creep and legacy costs piling up (if you want to play Yellow you are going bankrupt for their TopEnd)
I dropped 2 card games for one piece. Its was a nice fresh start and I only have a few issue's. Issue's I have is they're choice on ability's/skills are dumb, they'll give bad decks maybe 1 support card maybe a year and it's bad whereas an already powerful deck gets even more specific support. However the game for me is very cheap compared to other tcgs, pull rates pretty good, the artwork's at the start where completely pathetic but now we are getting crazy good art for even common card's, high rarity card's like sps look stunning in person. Dunno you said everything yourself. Game does deserve its praise and support
Secret Rares are NOT 1 per box, they are 4 per case of 12 boxes. The best way to understand rarity is to look at it at the case aggregate. You get 1 playset of each SEC and 2 playsets of each Super Rarer per case. Alt arts not withstanding
idk the meta is almost all top end, most of the players at my locals (about 18) are all not liking the direction. Power creep is killing the chance to run most older leaders as well.
Wut. The best deck, Doffy, basically runs no top end. And is a leader from the first set. PLuffy is more midrange, as are BYLuffy and Lucci (which are still around). I agree that Shanks, Blackbeard, Bonney, and Enel are top-end focused. And that Bandai putting out 6 new leaders every set is a problem, as the leaders are either dead on arrival (e.g. Dragon and King) or prevent older leaders from getting support. They've tried to combat that with the starter decks and EB sets, but it doesn't feel like enough.
I don’t think it’s a fluke, however the playerbase makes the game almost impossible to play. Don’t remotely say this game is new player accessible when it’s god damned near impossible to find.
One Piece did get better but not after OP07. The game was still expensive and took some time. Bandai knows this game is the bread and butter of there money making. If only collectors are able to collect then there wouldn't be game for players. Cases drop around 1k which is good sometimes booster boxes can drop below 100. Now, the game is in a healthy condition and more players are joining. I am able to have fun without breaking the bank. Also, forgot to mention that the prizing for majority of tournaments is much better than yugioh. Hate tro say this but some of yugioh players don't shower or wear deodarant.
I don’t think the games success was a fluke. It got popular because one piece gained so many fans over Covid and took over. The game was fun to collect and play but I also play bandais other card games which use the same colors of cards and each color having its own ability. Bandai however just abandons games and moves on which happened to battle spirits saga and it’s the reason we have 2 dragon ball super cards games with similar play style. One piece has probably about 2 more years till it’s bad and op cards are being pushed to sell sets but after that they will do what they did with dragon ball and refine it and make it a physical card game with a digital client and codes
but aint op10 receiving many complain? at least from my side as a "ocg" player, player are starting to decline and move to other other such like UA temporary
1:23 What are you even talking about? Commander precons aren't and were never meant to be competitively viable as there isn't an official competitive format. If you meant other formats' precons, they haven't made them in many years, which could have been your argument and would have been a good argument to make, but you didn't.
People are upset about One Piece? Really? Are you certain? Are you sure it isn’t just people who blew thousands of dollars in the initial months desperately trying to justify to themselves their investment under the guise of reassuring people who are occupied with their own hobbies that “it is still here and still successful”? Here in Australia the overwhelming response is “oh is that still a thing?” Almost nobody, with the exception of the most diehard super invested One Piece players, have strong feelings about it either way. It is, by and large, just “that one game that had the unreasonably expensive cards which nobody I know plays”.

They probably will for the next group of sets.
Double this, as a DIGI head this video gave great insight into the OP Tcg. Hoping Bandai can do the same for Digimon as well.
As someone who is not interesting in keeping up to date with TCGs extensions, I would love to see retro formats become a thing in some years.
@@aidanklobuchar1798 That sounds like a good explanation. Grass has always been the enemy.
I mean tbf rn doffy is bdif and is cheap , and pluffy altho its pruple its also really cheap tho
Tho i cant say moria isnt obnoxious af
@@frenix9882 except for those delicious Mr.2‘s. 25 bucks a copy is kinda hard to swallow.
NOTE: printing is still an issue in canada, doffy starter decks never dropped under 59.99 cad
I got my doffy decks on the west coast canada for like 32 CAD on release, now yeah it would be hard but there were quite a few around initially
@@Skyshadow733 Yeah 100% on release but afterwards it was GG
Can concur. Still almost impossible to find cards in Ottawa
You’re are so sassy in this video, and I love it lmao
Great Video! Very informative and easy to understand graphics 👍🏻
Your editing skills continue to blow me away 🤯
You should try looking into Mythik TCG. Very fun game
It's been the same for me lol (Lorcana included though lol).
I just need one thing from Bandai for all of their TCGs: official online simulators.
The void months aside where Bandai heavily undersupplied the market and scalpers went completely nuts on the pricing it's really a cheap game to hop into. now that the prices and supply mostly stabilized it's really easy to pick up a few boosters of the latest set
Not in Canada
Awesome video!
Who here as tried to make their own TCG? Mine was Diggemon (before Digimon). My friends and I would draw the characters during church.
TL;DR: Good casual outlet with good pricing and balance. (In my opinion)
Been a competitive Pokemon player for a long time now (8 1/2 years) and I've been really enjoying One Piece as a more casual outlet that lets me play pretty much anything and have the possibility of doing well with it, something Pokemon isn't exactly known for.
Not a fan of the anime, nor the tcg, but i love when the big 3 tcgs finally have some competition!
I wish they had a online game, really wanna learn to play.
And not the weird version were you need to pull files and stuff😅
I gave up on the Pokémon tcg and shifted into one Piece, it was a pretty smart decision.
Could you cover the Gundam Card Game and Ultraman Card Game in the future?
Bandai need to fix the weight of their cards (packs) to avoid box filtering.
is it as good as Fruit Monsters Trading card game though?
i play one piece as a side game
my main game is Cardfight Vanguard and you said this better than i ever could @ 4:54
ive been playing Vanguard for 10 years and while the format is great the accessibility isn't. i haven't recommend the game for a long time and it makes me sad that being said
i have recommended OP and i do love how accessible it is. i also wish the scalpers and vendors would chill tf out on the prices of the TD's and product buyout at Walmart's Targets etc
i haven't been able to find a blister since op04 lol
I had my first tournament yesterday and it was so fun
Love the video. What are your thoughts on Dragon Ball Fusion World TCG ?
2 years down, hopefully many more to go!
We just need a good video game and we solid
I’m not the biggest fan of the one piece tcg but game recognize game. Lorcana and Yugioh can count their days lol
What's wrong with Lorcana?
@@GuilhermeDiGiorgiThe only real issue I see is the lack of global (Eastern) appeal. There have been a bunch of smaller issues, but nothing crippling.
what happens when one piece finishes you think it will die out?
well I don't think one piece is finishing in the next 5 years. we still have a few more gigantic arcs to get through and then the anime goes on for a bit longer.
Also in our country distribution of card prizes are on borderline corrupted where the organizers keep the cards themselves.
is it possible to play online
AND UR TELLING ME MY LTCG STILL WONT PUT THEM ON THEIR SHELVES!!!
I hope they handle the new Gundam TCG as well as they have been handling One Piece TCG
Magic burnt me out but OP has revived me! Like all I think about is playing one piece now!
nice video mr monkeyF
this is the future
I want to get into one piece tcg but it seems kinda complicated with the rules. Any suggestions on best way to learn the game?
I'm also a new player. For me, watching RUclips channel like PawsePlay or straw hat pecan really help me in understanding the game.
Amazing Video
Well presented
What’s the source for the highest selling trading card games?
MtG and Yu-Gi-Oh absolutely deserve to go under due to negligence, and incompetent handling of their games.
I'd rather the new top 3 be Pokemon, One Piece, and Duel Masters.
Canada still has major stock issues :(( It’s still nearly 200 for a regular booster box (only the most recent one) and i haven’t even seen a PRB01 pack or box at all. super upsetting cuz i’m trying to buy but there’s nothing to get
no doubt abt it.. one piece is elite
agree one piece is GOATED
I dropped MTG in favor of One Piece as it was easier to track card releases and understand the meta without the Hasbro approach to card releases.
Secret Rares are NOT 1 per box, they are 4 per case of 12 boxes. The best way to understand rarity is to look at it at the case aggregate. You get 1 playset of each SEC and 2 playsets of each Super Rarer per case. Alt arts not withstanding
Hope the game continues to get better so that Konami pays attention and starts to treat us like human beings.
Konami needs to wake tf up
idk the meta is almost all top end, most of the players at my locals (about 18) are all not liking the direction.
Man im so happy for those enjoying OP but it's this limited combos that makre it so boring for me
I don’t think it’s a fluke, however the playerbase makes the game almost impossible to play. Don’t remotely say this game is new player accessible when it’s god damned near impossible to find.
What are you on about; it’s everywhere. So easy to find a locals
Ive seen ppl open 3 displays and only get shit 😂
Started playing in OP-4 fell off after 6 just got back in with 9.
Fun game. Not my favorite. But games are quick. Love the art and the IP.
Dragonball fusion world does all this, but better in my opinion 😅
And its more fun, when both leaders are awakened is when the game really starts and gets all frenetic
Video on your first thoughts of Project K (League of Legends trading card game)
They're not positive overall, mostly because I'm sad about runeterra. But the gameplay could be okay, I'm just not big into riot as a company
I don't think it's a fluke but it's being hard carried by the resurgence of the one piece anime being more popular than ever.
weird cause I think the anime is trash and I havent followed in years but moved from mtg to this
So does Pokemon and Yugioh
but aint op10 receiving many complain? at least from my side as a "ocg" player, player are starting to decline and move to other other such like UA temporary
There is no more Big 3, it is now the 4 Horseman. I see people everyday buying packs from the Official store and they sell out pretty often.
I hope the One Piece TCG goes on for at least 10 years!
I'm sure it will one piece is very popular and it's growing
Congrats for your video #OnePiece
One piece is the 🆕 🔝 tcg
1:23 What are you even talking about? Commander precons aren't and were never meant to be competitively viable as there isn't an official competitive format.
If you meant other formats' precons, they haven't made them in many years, which could have been your argument and would have been a good argument to make, but you didn't.
I think you've missed my main point
The main point doesn't matter if factually incorrect information is being used to support it
The info is correct you're just not understanding what I said and missing the larger point.
I am a former yugioh player and the Bandai games are extremely generous compared to every card game.
I actually WANT to buy boxes starter decks!
I just want them to stop printing the Odyssey cards, they're so bad and lazy in the art! (they're literally just screenshots in the game)
People are upset about One Piece? Really? Are you certain? Are you sure it isn’t just people who blew thousands of dollars in the initial months desperately trying to justify to themselves their investment under the guise of reassuring people who are occupied with their own hobbies that “it is still here and still successful”?
Here in Australia the overwhelming response is “oh is that still a thing?”
Almost nobody, with the exception of the most diehard super invested One Piece players, have strong feelings about it either way. It is, by and large, just “that one game that had the unreasonably expensive cards which nobody I know plays”.
hmm
Optcg Most sucessful cardgame can bandai make.
