- Dallas discusses some common noise that you may hear from your transmission and what you should about it.
"Hello again. Dallas Council back from AAMCO Transmissions of Venice and today, I want to talk to you about some common symptoms and sounds that you may hear if you are experiencing a transmission failure. So with that, let's go and get started.
If you start your car, put it in gear and it goes, "Graaaaaaaaa-kk!" that may be a transmission problem. If you start your car and it goes, "Wizzzzzzz-zzzzz," that also may be a transmission problem. If when you put your car in gear and give it gas, it goes, Vrooooooooom-Clunk that could also mean that you are having a transmission problem. If when you accelerate, your car goes Vvvvvvvoooooooo and doesn't move very fast, you may be experiencing a transmission problem. If when your car is shifting gears, it goes thddddddth, thddddddth you may be experiencing a transmission problem. If you're driving on the highway and you hear, "Whooooooo, whoo, whoooo," you are probably about to get a speeding ticket.
The point of this video was to explain a few symptoms that you may experience if your transmission is failing but more to get the point across that transmissions fail in a variety of ways. There is no set of symptoms that you may experience. Sometimes, you may be experiencing a symptom or noise that you are certain is the transmission and indeed it's really not the transmission.
And sometimes you may be experiencing a symptom that you are certain is not the transmission and it may be a transmission failure. With today's transmissions, they're all electronically controlled. They are very hard and can be very tricky to diagnose. Some problems may be minor and not very expensive at all and some problems may be major and be very, very expensive.
The best thing to do in any case is to get your car to a specialist or a certified mechanic that will diagnose the car for you accurately because again, there is no common set of circumstances that make one failure major as opposed to one being minor. That can only be determined in real time by a real diagnosis.
So again the point of this video was to really have a good time and make you laugh but also get the point across that transmissions fail in a variety of different ways. The most important thing is getting it diagnosed by a trained professional that will save you the most money and get you the best quality repair.

Actually had me laughing my ass off!!! Then I thought about the $1,800.00 I just paid for a rebuilt that is now making some of these sounds 6 months later, I didn't find it as funny. Thankfully, it's guaranteed for 1 year.

This is a nice guy just trying to help. He even made it funny, so yeah why the negative comments? The ONLY thing that irked me a teeny bit was the repetition of "you may have a transmission problem," but SO WHAT? The public service he didn't have to do FAR outweighed anything else. I learned now what to listen for just in case.
My question is that I'd like to know what the cause is behind the clunking sounds I hear when first going from park to reverse when parked and just starting up to drive? It also will clunk if I test it going from neutral to drive, or reverse to park, to the point of shaking the car. However, when driving, it shifts smoothly with none of the noises he described. My tranny fluid is between minimum and maximum. Who knows, maybe it's the motor mount or something else?

You're absolutely right my truck is making those sound including the last one like a siren.... my parking brake are not working either. I had to use the energy brake to stop my truck from rolling backwards... Thanks for the transmission diagnosis
That's really funny. My truck made some horrible sounds and I was trying to imitate it for someone to diagnose and I couldn't convey it (have you ever tried-? Not easy. :/) Then I searched for sounds on this site and he did pretty good. lol Now I'm on the way back to show him this to see if that's indeed the problem and right shop. Thanks for the humor in an unnerving situation.

1998 I purchased a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix. Weeks later I had an occasional shifting problem. I took it to AAMCO on South Santa Fe Ave., Vista CA. The manager/tech explained that my shifter cable was bad and it needed to be replaced and the cost would be about $1800.00. Being that I was a college student with little cash, he offered me a deal of $1500 to help me out because he had a cable in stock, did not have to order the cable, he could fix it and I would be on the road in less than an hour. Still too much money, I said no because I only paid $2000 for the car and did not want it to be a money pit.
Anyway a few days later, it failed while driving. While down-shifting and going into a parking lot, it would not go into any gear. Stress is mounting, opened the hood and did some investigating. After about 2 minutes I found what I thought was the problem and pushed the end of the shifter cable onto the little knob or nipple that was below the shifter cable. Got back in the car and it was shifting. I went home and put a hairpin around the post to hold it down and it worked. I drove that car without any shifting problems for the next 5 years, never returning to AAMCO. No wonder he said he had one in stock and could have me on the road in an hour. He was going to do the same thing, but charge me $1500 for a 2-cent, 30-second fix.
I am telling this story so that others will know that most (NOT ALL) mechanics will rip you off if given the chance. 25 years later I will not go to any AAMCO for anything. What a lasting NEGATIVE impression AAMCO gave me. 25 years later I still will not go to or recommend AAMCO.
Before anyone goes to AAMCO, check other options, keep checking other options until you find another option, but never go to AAMCO!
what about ticking/clicking sound. when in park or neutral snapping the throttle no sound. put in drive while driving a steady ticking/clicking sound. stays at a constant. won't do it in reverse.
ROFL! When. the trannsmission failed in my '97 Hyundai Sonata.. It didn't make any of those noises! It just went BANG! Then after I had a shop "rebuild" the transmisssion.. it made EVERY ONE of those noises, before it went "BANG" again! This was YEARS ago..I can laugh about it now! Great sound effects! XD

I got kinda excited 1 minute and 15 seconds in thinking I was gonna get some info about my 6L80 trans. It sounds similar in my 09 Suburban LTZ when the trans slips.
2003 Mustang GT Deluxe V8 Automatic. When pressing on the gas, it makes a loud whining noise and it doesn't shift 100% on time. Once it got to 6000RPMS and I had to feather the gas to make it shift. Replaced the torque converter because it happens randomly. Thought that it just wasn't fully engaging. Still makes the noise. Any pointers, or anything??? I'm CLUELESS!!!

Mine goes, "Bzzzzzzzzzz" in any gear and Patk, while I am stopped. It may be "buzzing" while I drive and I just can't hear it. Sometimes I can change the gear and it will subside a little or even stop the sound entirely.

I keep hearing about these transmission problems that are a cheap fix but every time I or someone else has a problem it seems like it can't be fixed and the whole thing needs to be replaced.
