Low and Slow Is The Best Technique | No One Uses It Because Of This

  • It is that time of year again where some folks are ready to winterize their grills and smokers, and even if you’re not like I’m not, it's still a good idea to go ahead and give them a deep clean. I’ve been doing a lot of low and slow cooking on my auto kamado recently and boy has it gotten dirty on the inside. Luckily this cooker is really easy to clean so we’ll just get right into it. With everything on the inside of this cooker other than the cooking grate being porcelain enamel coated any build up creosote, gunk, or grease comes off with minimal force. I like to just take a sheet of aluminum foil and ball it up to use as the abrasive to knock anything off the inside of my cooker. If you need a little more force I recommend getting a plastic putty knife to chip away at anything that is really stuck on. Once you remove the inner charcoal basket, give the entire inside of the cooker a rub down with that aluminum foil ball knocking all of the debris into the ash pan including any residue on your heat deflector. After that it's as simple as dump your ash pan and put this cooker back together. In the land of grills it really doesn’t get much easier than that so make sure you give your cooker a good cleaning and let me know if you have any questions while you’re taking care of that normal maintenance. #cooking #bbq #charcoal

🙌Thanks for all of your Char-griller Kamato videos. I'm a Weber WSM for several years now. I have mastered low and slow with that cooker. Walmart has the Auto-Kamato on sale for $220.00 So I bought one. Can't wait to get started. Thanks.

Great video tutorial! I never thought of the aluminum ball scraper -- thanks for that! I definitely should do this... but I think I'll wait until it's warmer in the Spring to handle it. 😝

Good points and definitely makes sense. We get very little creosote build up in our drums, so makes sense for sure. That foil ball tip is money.. best way, especially in a pinch or hurry to clean a rack!

Yeah exactly, I haven’t seen much creosote in a long time I saw it recently in the auto kamado and though…we should talk about this lol

I know you mentioned putty knives but I just wanted to add that I have pretty good success with the plastic ones. I don’t have to worry as much about scratching any surface finishes…plus they’re cheap and come in a variety of sizes.

Hey George, your right and I should’ve specified the 97 cent plastic putty knife is the way to go for sure to keep from tearing up those finishes. 👍

What diffuser is that? It looks different than the ones I've seen for these. Is it ceramic ? BTW...Great video! I don't have a kamado yet but I am considering.

How often do you recommend cleaning the Kamado?

I use plastic putty knives to scrape the inside clean. Great idea with using the clorox wipes. I never thought of that but will give it a try now!

Did my first smoke this year for Thanksgiving, turned out awesome. Had to beef up the gaskets as the gaskets that came from factory aren't great. Plan on trading up to a Kamado Joe next year

after a low and slow cook just open it wide open nuclear temp for 30 mins or so and pretty much everything is burnt off
once the smoke clears it then a good time to have those pizzas too , make the most of that high temp charcoal burn off
