How I Got The MisterPi (Taki Clone) To Work With A CRT TV, And How It Doesn't Work For The Main Menu

  • As you can tell, I am pissed.
    A $200 device intended to be used for retro games on old CRT TVs should just work.
    At first, I had to use a separate jenky ass HDMI monitor setup to load the main menu, after which if I pick a core, it loads on the main Toshiba 32 inch TV just fine.
    WORKAROUND IDEA WHICH NOW WORKS TO SHOW THE MAIN MENU FOR THE MISTER PI:
    First, replace the existing 'menu.rbf' file with this one renamed to 'menu.rbf', and stick it onto the root of the Mister's SD card:
    github.com/MiS...
    This is because the main Mister menu is messed up, and broken, and using this one will work.
    Next, use the following settings for the 'ini' file:
    Ini File:
    pastebin.com/x...
    Related settings added:
    ```
    vga_mode=svideo
    ntsc_mode=0
    composite_sync=1
    vga_scaler=0
    [menu]
    vga_scaler=1
    fb_terminal=1
    video_mode=384,31,25,71,224,12,3,23,8040
    ```
    Here is the VGA to composite adapter I bought from eBay:
    www.ebay.com/i...
    I used a 3.5 mm audio to left and right red and white audio cable from the headphone jack to the back of the TV's second input's audio.
    I used a double sided composite (red yellow white) cable to connect the one yellow end to the yellow input on the TV's second input.
    With all of these file changes in mind, and with the cables mentioned above, you should now be able to see the main menu using composite out on the Mister Pi with the mega pack triple stack.
    IF THAT DID NOT WORK FOR YOU, TRY THE FOLLOWING:
    Here's what I did before I used the above settings:
    I hooked up a separate small HDMI computer monitor to the MisterPi, and also connected the CRT TV to it.
    I then went back to the main menu on the HDMI monitor, pressed B on the 8bitdo SN30 Pro controller I am using and hit the left dpad button to get the current IP address given to the MisterPi.
    I then set a static IP for my Mister Pi device by using a related ssh command to ssh into the machine:
    ssh root@ipaddressofmisterpi
    I used this command to determine the MAC address of the MisterPi which was connected to my router wirelessly with the wireless USB adapter from the MisterPi mega pack:
    ip link show wlan0
    I wrote down the MAC address of the device which showed up next to the 'link/ether' part of the results.
    I then logged into my router config page, found the wireless settings, and added a static IP address for the MisterPi device using the MAC address I wrote down earlier.
    I then installed the following 'remote' script from this GitHub page:
    github.com/wiz...
    This was installed by taking the 'remote.sh' shell script, popping in my MisterPi device's SD card into my Linux computer and then pasting it into the "Scripts" folder.
    I then rebooted the MisterPi device, pressed B on my controller, and then went to Scripts, and pressed A on the "remote" script, pressed A to enable it, and then exited that menu once the service was enabled.
    I then installed the 'Remote' app for the Mister which has an purple octopus logo from the Google Play Store, and was able to properly load cores this way from my phone without an HDMI monitor.
    WHAT HAPPENED BEFOREHAND:
    I turned the Mister Pi mega pack triple stack unit on with the Steam Deck charger. I then navigated on the main menu for the MisterPi with the HDMI monitor. The main menu does not show up on the CRT tv.
    Only when I navigate to a core on the main menu of the HDMI monitor and select it, does the CRT monitor finally work.
    WHY THIS IS DUMB:
    I'm pissed as I should be, and you should too if you're in my boat too.
    Thankfully the first workaround worked for me, but the only other workaround that looks possible is to use an Android app to change cores after setting a fixed IP address on the Mister itself via my router settings and to pick a core.
    This should be addressed by either the MisterPi team directly, or through the Mister core team that works on the main menu itself.

    I just got the same adaptor and my misterpi doesn’t seem to be working with it. I don’t get any svideo or composite signal at all to the crt. Chris that makes the adaptor has been super responsive and working to help me fix it. Hoping it gets working so I can do some gaming on my crt!

      Did you try the ini file I linked in the description? I have all the workarounds I used as well. You might want to use a separate weird HDMI monitor to launch the main menu to then launch the core and see if the core menu launches on your TV. If the HDMI monitor method works, try enabling ssh on your Mister via the instructions I have in the video description since you can use ssh with the Mister remote app on Google Play Store for Android as a workaround to launch cores from your phone. A bit goofy but it worked before I figured out the main menu solution.

      To be fair, I really don't know. I agree, it was very very frustrating to deal with half of this, and I am a VERY technical person.
      Even this pushed my limits since I would expect it to "just work" with composite.
      I still have no idea what the fascination is with HDMI with these retro leaning devices since HDMI looks like shit with old consoles. And introducing CRT shaders adds lag, which defeats the whole purpose of using a mister in the first place Crazy imo.

      If you can't get one, try the UK time slot one and have the site ready since less people are awake for that one.
